So, I never played D3 and haven't played D4. But I guess it doesn't matter that Mephisto was dead and his soul was shattered then.

And I guess if you kill him or any other demon or angel or god or whatever in D4 then it also won't matter since they'll 'somehow returned' in D5.

It seems like demons are just straight up immortal. You cannot ever get rid of them. Mephisto is "reforming" in hell or something, meaning that no matter what you do, he will eventually come back.

It might be the same for Angels, I dunno. you also fight and kill Duriel and Andariel in D4, so whatever.

A bold move for a narrative to explicitly tell the player that nothing they do in the story matters at all.

you mean to tell me the eternal conflict is actually eternal

              Anonymous

No, eternal conflict is fine but if you are literally recycling the exact same characters and not just their archetypes that are representations of the Jungian mind, you are a fricking hack. It's evil never sleeps, not Mephisto trapped in a pokeball never sleeps.

soulstones were always only a stopgap measure
killing a demon outright just lets them reform in hell eventually
trapping in a soulstone keeps them from reforming but the soulstone itself starts corrupting the region passively just from existing with a prime evil or equivalent inside it, and direct contact with it into a human just lets the demon bodyjack you
smashing a soulstone with a demon in it on the hellforge scatters its essence which means they can still reform it just takes significantly more time than killing them outright
d4 takes place like 50 years after d3, and d3 takes place 20-30 years after d2 (assuming they were meant to go with the d3 male barb being the same barb from d2 but older that isnt really canon) and mephisto in d4 is still in the process of reforming after getting his soulstone bapped way back in d2

So Tal'Rasha was literally the only person doing things right because no other strategy would be effective in the least?

I guess next time you just make the tomb a couple of miles deeper.

We killed the entire pantheon of demons in 2 and 3
Not like it matters it seems since we just played D2 again
        >Andariel
        >Duriel
        >Femephisto
I assume we are just going to kill all primes again and lessers before they probably kill off the angles next and then retcon the game again in d5

I don't know what the story of any of the Diablo games is past the first, it's all just moronic nonsense. Here's what a story of a Diablo game should be

    >some bad shit went down in a dungeon
    >go fricking kill everything in there

There. Thats the only fricking story you need. You don't need angels and mysterious orders and fricking moronic ass mind control motherfrickers everywhere. Just fricking put a dungeon there, say "BAD IN DUNGEON, GO KILL" and let sword go brrrr.

lilith bamboozling weak minded human simps in order to reach hell and overtake her father except her father outbamboozles her pulling the ol' one handed gypsy trick (a true classic, far above lilith's power level)
oh and she shanks inarius for being a dumbfrick
and im not sure if either of them can reform in time its been a while but i think angels are unique and theres only so many at one time and when one gets bapped a new one emerges from the crystal thing in heaven
demons reform all the time and i would assume lilith is on the same level as one of the lesser evils and they have no problem returning over time though

Why the group of morons even bands together. Why are you "the hero" motivated to do anything at all? Just because you drank some of her sweet ovulation juices doesn't mean you have any reason to want to kill her. She mesmerized some humans into killing a priest, boo fricking hoo. Why should the character we play as care? And why do they let the mystery meat chink run away?

cause lillith is going around the continent leaving bad shit in her wake just like the big bads in the previous games that you gotta clean up like a good little jannie
as for the gypsy shes already gone mephisto is completely downloaded like instantly she talked a good game in hell about avoiding the hate that lets mephisto manipulate you and then got completely got as soon as she reached his chamber

I think Lorath tells you that, at some point, you will lose your mind and be corrupted into Lilith's servant or whatever. I think that's right, but if so, they kinda drop that plot point.

I once read a post here that hilariously described the peculiar tone of the story. Below is a copypaste of it:

Lilith beat and outsmarted everyone, including physically and psychologically bodying Inarius, and then metaphorically castrating him by ripping his wings off. Nyrelle became as knowledgeable as Donan, a former Horadrim, within weeks? Days? That gave me Rey from Star Wars vibes. You may hate Prava, but she knows what she wants and is tough (walking on lava much!?). Taissa hovered over and criticized Donan while he failed to reforge the soulstone; Taissa had to swoop in and help Donan by giving him recreational hallucinogens to force him to come to terms with his son’s death. After Donan successfully reforged the soulstone, Taissa remarked, “That was it?”

Elias simped after and was used by Lilith. He called her his mommy for the entire game. Lilith doesn’t even mention him after his death. Lorath suffered from depression and alcoholism. Near the end of the game he just gives up. He was ready to die until he read the letter from Nyrelle. One would think an older man and old school Horadrim would be mentally tougher and wiser than a teen girl whose mom just died. Think again. Donan spent most of the game being fat and incompetent. He cowered in front of Lilith, stuck his son in danger, couldn’t save his son, and then cried. At the end of the game he dies from a decoration. I thought this guy was an experienced demon hunter? Inarius spent years meditating in front of a picture of himself but the best plan he could come up with was, “Derrrr, I wun into hell now.” The only reason he got a hit in on Lilith was because she allowed it and he still missed.

That has got to be the dumbest deaths in a while that's supposed to be... tragic? or something.
        >Man I don't like hell, it's all gloom and hot
        >My feet hurt
        >I wish I were at home, huh did this corpse just move?
        >AAAAAAAAIIIIEEEE

we dont know the shit lorath went through between the hopeful ending of RoS and reforming the horadrim with him as a founding member and the 50 years later when hes a broken loner on a different continent and zero other active horadrim. plus he has a pretty grim eternity waiting for him now
theres no way that tyreal isnt dead tho.
donan was completely wasted i was pretty confused cause i figured his "death" would be a fakeout but no homie just straight up dies from a tormented soul taking one swipe at him after he spent the last five minutes facetanking ashava

it's ultimately about Mephisto fricking around with everyone so he can summon himself and his brothers (Diablo and Baal) in the expansion so they can frick up Sanctuary even more than last time, since there's no Worldstone to block heaven or hells forces they can send everything at us now

      Anonymous

yeah but no worldstone means more humies with potential nephalim powers to fight back against
hang on im being told 80% of humanity was wiped out in like a week by a single archangel using necromancy

Oh no! What will we do. The stakes will be so high this time! I guess we will stand no chance and will be forced to fight the titans who created the gods who created the primal tree. Only then will we be powerful enough to face Diablo. Again.
