It's an extremely conservative remake, everything is translated nearly 1:1 just in 3D, the only.three things that got changed drastically are Mario, Peach and Bowser's models that are closer to their modern appearance.

What did they do?
NTA but much of the script sticks to direct translation with no pop culture references. Frogfucius is Frog Sage, Mack is Claymorton, Hinopio is Cinder Toad, etc. It's probably the only thing localizers can point at to say "see? you need us because direct translations are boring!"
