Looking online for a QRD, it appears the plot was dinosaurs in space which is so stupid it loops around to being kind of cool. Did they take themselves seriously or did it lean into being schlock?
Well, it follows the trend of 2 in terms of schlock, take that as you will. The gameplay was just shit, especially the controls.

This game legitimately has the worst camera of all time. It changes angles on you at times that make absolutely no sense, like you're about to land on a platform and it completely snaps to some other angle right before you land. Or the way it just faces a small part of the room resulting in you fighting offscreen enemies with basically no audio cues for attacks for most of the game. Then the game respawns enemies constantly and has them take half your health in a single hit. If that wasn't enough the entire game is littered with backtracking in environments that look exactly the same from start to finish. It's like the game is trying everything it can to make you stop playing it.
This guy nailed it. The game's difficulty's pretty bad too. I actually started out playing the game on hard mode and it was fricking insane. It's a little too easy on Normal mode even if you don't grind, but Hard mode is just completely ridiculous. In a way it's nice because the save points are pretty far apart, it's legitimately terrifying to play, but just a little overtuned.

Dino Crisis 2 already had plenty of shitty camera angles that meshed terribly with the action, with DC3 they just went all in with it.

You have no idea. It is no hyperbole, the worst camera system ever in a video game.
I guess this is one of those issues you have to experience for yourself as videos and description can only do so much.
Capcom wanted to make a game that was basically humans vs dinos on a devastated America, but then 9/11 happened.

when this came out i hated that everybody was shitting on it just because it was trying a different setting, so i went to the store and rented it for the weekend and i tried so so so hard to like it, but i just kept being appalled. when i brought it back the woman asked how did i like it and even then i tried, i really tried to come up with something nice to say but i couldn't think of much. such a shame.

The character designs still have a distinct Japanese flare to them but you're right. There's almost nothing Dino about the cover. Mind you none of the American DC cover arts do.

I can see the appeal of 2, but I literally stopped playing midway. Maybe I was all dino'd out since I had just beaten DC1, but since that's such a different game, not entirely sure. I did really enjoy DC1 and was taken aback going into DC2.

I'm pretty sure 99% of the hate for Dino Crisis 3 is just console warriors that never played it because they were mad that it was Xbox exclusive.
It's a dramatic shift from the RE-style gameplay of the first two games (which could of worked) and the camera is amazingly shit (which is fricking moronic and something that should've been sorted out especially in an high-octane action game like this). I can't tell you how many fricking times a dinosaur attacked me from somewhere I literally couldn't see until I lost health.
Also, for some reason, the mostly light-hearted, 80s action movie, time travelling aspect of the first two games is gone and now it's a "science gone wrong" sorta deal. Not bad in and of itself, but it feels like the odd one out in terms of the mood being very different and characters from the first 2 games not appearing at all. It should've been a side game if anything.
It's not complete shit, but I have no desire to return to it at all. It's just a bad game.
