I think what annoys me above all else is that people are gaslighting that "guilty gear was always for the queers" when you can LITERALLY look at tournament results from the early games up until endgame of Xrd and see that was 100000000% not the case. It was Strive that did this and then they took over. The only fricking reason you see trannies in Xrd and +R is that the FGC tend to typically move on to the current and even then, vets come out and remind these freaks of their place.

Considering how many top end AC and +R players never made the jump to Xrd it's hilarious that anyone would call someone that didn't play Xrd forever a fake fan. Xrd came out at a time where anime already had no players so you had to be New York City, Minneapolis, or San Fran to regularly get games. All the anime games were pretty much that way.
This includes Japan's pro scene though. So many strong players just never bothered playing Xrd because of system changes or lack of characters. Pretty much every Anji player just stuck with +R forever to this day.

I mean that's kind of the grand punchline, first of all I don't even think GGST had consultation.
But up until this point, GG was always a niche franchise usually 1-Upped by Blazblue in terms of popularity. Now Blazblue is dead and Mori's out of the building with GG being the only original ArcSys franchise getting released. For as much as anyone wants to cry doom and gloom for catering to the woke mob, Strive has objectively done better than any previous entry. Personally I have a laundry list of complaints about it like the desaturated graphics, the technically sound but relatively bland game feel and the soundtrack not feeling as in tune to the rest of the franchise leading to some mixed results but I also can't pretend like it's destined to fail because Bridget is trans or some other moronic reason. It came out at just the right time to succeed and that's rather unfortunate considering even games like Granblue they later worked on I consider more enjoyable as an actual game. Also the Strive lobby system makes me want to jam forks into my fricking eyes
While I do think its moronic, there was definitely a point in time where Strive was clearly pegging Nagoriyuki as the favorite. He was 100% getting stronger and stronger with no end in sight. It was only recently they finally tuned him down because Bridget was the new favorite (and even then, they clearly are not moronic enough to make him top 1.)

KOF and SF are alive again and Guilty Gear was always a niche product. Strive put it just mainstream enough for the trans people to take it over when everyone else ditched for other games while the old Gear players just stuck to +R after it got netcode, keeping their smaller tournaments alive since they have a healthy international camaraderie for +R.
Also Strive is the easiest of the modern fighting games to play that has a prize pool, but it's too easy so even the people from the retirement home Mortal Kombat don't even want to play it.

Simply put, Xrd is in the awkward place where its not as hard as +R and not as easy as Strive. Its got a very specific time and place and while its obviously more similar to +R, you either love or hate its specific mechanics. Frankly I prefer YRC over FRC but that's also because MY CHARACTER is top 5 in this game and doesn't destroy my wrists playing her. Ever wonder why you never see American I-no players in +R? There's no doubt I'd probably be a +R player otherwise.
Danger time also somehow is more divisive than anything Strive introduced. Which is crazy because I do not understand how several years in and everybody thinks wall break and Strive's take on guard crush are healthy elements. They are both so fricking horrible. When Garou of all games has a better guard crush system than yours, then you know you fricked up.

It simply came out at the wrong time and place. Despite the fact people were b***hing about SF5, they refused to actually budge towards current games that actually benefited from it. Xrd actually had a moment to steal the Street Fighter player base. Instead, Strive was able to ape off SF5 fatigue because it was at the end of its life span. It also HELPS regardless of whether people want to admit it or not that they fricking advertised the game as much as possible, showing it off as much as possible, and making sure to have people be able to play it so they can test it and miserably enough make that first season that was clearly meant for any idiot that has never played a fighting game to jump on (Season 1 May and Sol have got to be the most braindead characters ever created. They had SF2 priority boxes compared to the gimped cast).
Its one of those things where people, once again, will gaslight you that Xrd failed because it couldn't cater to an audience when there's just a lot of unfortunate hypocrisies at play and stupid decisions from ArkSys. A lot of this changes when FighterZ comes out and puts our now troony chasing devs on the map.

The influence was obvious. After getting the rights back they wanted Guilty Gear to attract the Blazblue fans as well. Which backfired because BBgays just sticked to Centralfiction - they couldn't care less about Guilty Gear even with catboy and chuuni designs.

I think it varies from character to character. Axl’s Strive design does realign him with +R imo, but with Millia you’re right in that it was a do-over on her Xrd design. Some of it also depends on how you feel about character redesigns in general. Millia’s sucked ass but Potemkin’s was great.
There’s also the Xrd original characters that are in Strive to consider: Elphelt and Ramlethal both look like they jumped right out of BlazBlue with their designs. I think their Strive designs wouldn’t look that out of place +R by comparison.

It got a chinese roguelike action platformer months ago. Honestly it didn't even look that bad but apparently devs fricked up the gameplay right before release
Entropy Effect is unironically pretty fun, it's kind of braindead because runs only have like 4 levels but the "combo" system is probably one of the best it could be for a Blazblue Roguelike that can't include all the input commands. Character specific oddities are also translated pretty well, with Tao getting a buff or hitting a lot and Hibiki's back damage buff. Jin and Lambda in particular are really fun to play with around endgame. Just wish runs were longer and that there was more Blazblue than literally just the characters. Hope they Naoto in soon, curious as to how they're gonna do him

Strive is popular because even braindead people can play it. The wallbreak mechanic is bad as it makes the problem it tried to solve actually worse and they dumped down all characters to a degree veterans consider unrecognizable but your game will still succeed as long as casuals have a chance to win occasionally.
That and STRIVE released while Arcsys were at the height of their popularity with the release of FighterZ. The game would have been a success no matter what just because everyone wanted to see their next game.

Considering how many top end AC and +R players never made the jump to Xrd it's hilarious that anyone would call someone that didn't play Xrd forever a fake fan. Xrd came out at a time where anime already had no players so you had to be New York City, Minneapolis, or San Fran to regularly get games. All the anime games were pretty much that way.
This includes Japan's pro scene though. So many strong players just never bothered playing Xrd because of system changes or lack of characters. Pretty much every Anji player just stuck with +R forever to this day.

But up until this point, GG was always a niche franchise usually 1-Upped by Blazblue in terms of popularity. Now Blazblue is dead and Mori's out of the building with GG being the only original ArcSys franchise getting released. For as much as anyone wants to cry doom and gloom for catering to the woke mob, Strive has objectively done better than any previous entry. Personally I have a laundry list of complaints about it like the desaturated graphics, the technically sound but relatively bland game feel and the soundtrack not feeling as in tune to the rest of the franchise leading to some mixed results but I also can't pretend like it's destined to fail because Bridget is trans or some other moronic reason. It came out at just the right time to succeed and that's rather unfortunate considering even games like Granblue they later worked on I consider more enjoyable as an actual game. KOF and SF are alive again and Guilty Gear was always a niche product. Strive put it just mainstream enough for the trans people to take it over when everyone else ditched for other games while the old Gear players just stuck to +R after it got netcode, keeping their smaller tournaments alive since they have a healthy international camaraderie for +R.
Also Strive is the easiest of the modern fighting games to play that has a prize pool, but it's too easy so even the people from the retirement home Mortal Kombat don't even want to play it.

Frankly I prefer YRC over FRC but that's also because MY CHARACTER is top 5 in this game and doesn't destroy my wrists playing her. Ever wonder why you never see American I-no players in +R? There's no doubt I'd probably be a +R player otherwise.
Danger time also somehow is more divisive than anything Strive introduced. Which is crazy because I do not understand how several years in and everybody thinks wall break and Strive's take on guard crush are healthy elements. They are both so fricking horrible. When Garou of all games has a better guard crush system than yours, then you know you fricked up.

It also HELPS regardless of whether people want to admit it or not that they fricking advertised the game as much as possible, showing it off as much as possible, and making sure to have people be able to play it so they can test it and miserably enough make that first season that was clearly meant for any idiot that has never played a fighting game to jump on (Season 1 May and Sol have got to be the most braindead characters ever created. They had SF2 priority boxes compared to the gimped cast).
Its one of those things where people, once again, will gaslight you that Xrd failed because it couldn't cater to an audience when there's just a lot of unfortunate hypocrisies at play and stupid decisions from ArkSys. Strive looks like shit but as much as i hate this trash game - The disneyfication of GG already started with Xrd.
Many of the design choices we see in Strive are just Xrd taken a little bit further.

They wanted Xrd to be the next hot mainstream thing and killed Guilty Gears identity with it - but the game only did okay so STRIVE had to go just a little further and with a little help of the post-FighterZ ArcSys hype it worked.
Guilty Gear is now the 3rd biggest fighter only behind Tekken and SF in the scene.

I’d actually argue the opposite. Strive’s design choices reverse Xrd’s by a step. Compare That Man’s design at the end of Revelator to his design in Strive. They both look like BlazBlue rejects but at least the Strive version isn’t a catboy.
The influence was obvious. After getting the rights back they wanted Guilty Gear to attract the Blazblue fans as well. Which backfired because BBgays just sticked to Centralfiction - they couldn't care less about Guilty Gear even with catboy and chuuni designs.
Strive designs are less Blazblue but they are still very removed from the original core ideas behind those characters. And sometimes they also just took Xrd designs and made them less BB.

Millia in Xrd is a totally different design after AC. The Strive design is just Xrds design again but less Blazblue'ish - it's not a return to the norm.

I think it varies from character to character. Axl’s Strive design does realign him with +R imo, but with Millia you’re right in that it was a do-over on her Xrd design. Some of it also depends on how you feel about character redesigns in general. Millia’s sucked ass but Potemkin’s was great.
There’s also the Xrd original characters that are in Strive to consider: Elphelt and Ramlethal both look like they jumped right out of BlazBlue with their designs. I think their Strive designs wouldn’t look that out of place +R by comparison.

XX was special because while it did have a really high skill ceiling and an execution barrier, you could also play like a moron and freestyle ideas and still come out looking cool.

Can someone give me the rundown on FRCs in +R. I played the game years ago but got filtered by them and some of the other mechanics and I'm thinking about giving the game another shot since I'm not as shitty with execution and such in fighters now

You do need the spike FRC for extending your pressure/blockstring but having a solid understanding of her oki and neutral shit is gonna win you far more games than anything else. Fish is basically do all the neutral for you anyway.

Entropy Effect is unironically pretty fun, it's kind of braindead because runs only have like 4 levels but the "combo" system is probably one of the best it could be for a Blazblue Roguelike that can't include all the input commands. Character specific oddities are also translated pretty well, with Tao getting a buff or hitting a lot and Hibiki's back damage buff. Jin and Lambda in particular are really fun to play with around endgame. Just wish runs were longer and that there was more Blazblue than literally just the characters. Hope they Naoto in soon, curious as to how they're gonna do him

There are good things that are popular and there are bad things that are popular.
Everyone read the Eragon books back in the days even though 90% of people would agree that those books were shit.
Strive is popular because even braindead people can play it. The wallbreak mechanic is bad as it makes the problem it tried to solve actually worse and they dumped down all characters to a degree veterans consider unrecognizable but your game will still succeed as long as casuals have a chance to win occasionally.
That and STRIVE released while Arcsys were at the height of their popularity with the release of FighterZ. The game would have been a success no matter what just because everyone wanted to see their next game.

The Disney comparision kinda works if you consider that +R was the last GG game where Daisuke had a significant input as a creator.
With Strive he only did the music - and the music is all vocal shit - unlike the previous games - which implies that someone else gave him major directions.
