The merge meant a lot of funds and talent were shuffled around. It also increased the gear daily grind, which was already shitty, but got much worse.
The minmax culture came about as there were less and less things to do except raid. Interaction with the world got shafted and replaced with running dailies and weeklies for tokens and purples.
And the writing just got awful. There was no reason to care about the world or lore anymore. Everyone interesting died as a raid boss, or faded into obscurity the moment a questline was done.

    >3. Minmax culture
this is the actual dumbest mother fricking idea that anyone on Ganker can say.

It's the essence of gaming itself. wargaming is about minmaxing and winning. you don't war and try to lose.

  22. 4 months ago

    1. Activision merge literally did nothing. Blizzard's main studio operated independently from Activision's.
    2. Normalgays are what made up 99% of the population.
    3. A tiny innocuous autistic population of tryhard morons min-maxing that 99% of the population would never interact with wasn't the reason people quit. The only morons who cry about min-maxing just want to get carried through everything and throw a shitfit when they get cut for under performance.
    4. Streamers like to believe they have more influence than they really do.
    5. Refer to 3.
    6. Had no bearing on WoW's design.
    7. Gatekeeping is how you kill your MMO.
    8. More likely the case. Normies don't autistically play the same game for 5+ years on end they always move on to something new.
    9. Warcraft writing was always shit.

WOW took a world of humans and proceeded to become a fictional representation of replacement theory as tens of millions of non-humans changed the entire landscape into something unrecognizable from what it was in WC1 or WC2. It's poetic really that after everything was shat up and shit on by hordeBlack folk, trannies and normgroids, there was nothing left to despoil. World of Warcraft more like World of Morgoth. Evil can't create only pervert, subvert and mutilate.

I played BC and Wrath back in the day then the Classic versions for both.

The biggest difference? The fact that playing MMOs is no longer a unique way to interact with and play with friends in a way where you're building each other up.

The internet was still young and online games were still new, it was still cool to be playing with people 1,000s of miles away.

Now nobody gives a shit, half the time players aren't even looking at the screen for more than a few minutes at a time because of their phone/discord/other screens. There is much less of a genuine feel to it all.

I played Wrath Classic and it was hell. I couldn't get in any runs because I didn't have a good enough gear score, but I couldn't get gear because literally nobody let me run, not even a Naxx when everyone else was full Ulduar gear.

My true irl friends I have never played it back in the day, and pretty much all of my online friends from that time are gone.

    >2
This has no impact, normalgays were already on their way out of WoW when smartphones started booming.
    >3
This did a ton of damage by itself, the urge to optimize lead to the cancer known as M+, all because it ties into #5 even though it was borne out of the nastiest sweatlords who had no other things to do in that time.
    >4
Streamers are shit but it's arguably one of the few things keeping WoW semi-relevant, for what it's worth. I don't care much for the talking heads and I think jerking off over Twitch viewership is a bizarre thing.
    >5
Ironically, had it stayed out of the PvE side of things, esports angle would've been fine. But Blizzard just wanted to see teams of burnt out, depressed autists struggle for entire weeks with minimal rest to clear their overtuned garbage that the devs can't even playtest properly.
    >6
Sponsors aren't really a problem, more a symptom of the other points.
    >7
What is there left to gatekeep? How do you gatekeep a game that had millions of people playing at one point? The ship on that has long passed.
    >8
Inevitable. This isn't an issue if Blizzard didn't get so complacent.
    >9
Number one reason here. A lot of dudes I knew who got into WoW did so because of "COOL ARTHAS!!" or "FOR THE HORDE / ALLIANCE" or some other variation thereof. People were immersed in the world and loved it, they treated the lore with respect. Everyone embraced the character fantasy of their respective races and classes. It's kind of hard to take that seriously when every new patch pisses on what once was or just pulling out the "REMEMBER [so and so]?" card without injecting anything actually new into the mix. The writing was never that amazing but the unique style and gameplay immersion helped carry it. Unfortunately, that milquetoast, serviceable writing has turned into something terrible where it's so jarring from what it once was.

WoW was just "killed" for me before I even played it
    >Talking to friends
    >Say "hey I know you play WoW, might be fun if I join in"
    >They say no, because I'd never be able to catch up or keep up
    >End up not playing WoW
The reason early WoW was a success because everyone was on an even playing field and grew up with the game.
Now WoW is competing with a bunch of other online multiplayer games. Except WoW has a massively frontloaded commitment cost and if you're unable/unwilling to pay it there's basically no point.
The problem is why Diablo 4 implemented level scaling the way it did. Blizzard recognized the problem and tried to fix it.

  57. 4 months ago

None of the above. They switched to going for expansion based systems before 2007 and focusing on PVP and just endgame. When originally they were going to release a lot of lateral content for pre-60 they instead promised expansions and level increases.
Only listening to the tiny amount of crybabies on the forums instead of sticking to their guns and just making the game how it was originally laid out.
If you were all over the blizzard forums in 2005-2006 it's literally your fault.
