Car combat is for real dead as frick, they fricked up the revival and recently cancelled a GaaS Twisted Metal that they were working on (honestly probably would have also flopped so maybe a good thing).
God knows why they can't just make a typical car combat game like they still do fighting games.
Just make a decent roster, give them their own little story modes, add an arcade mode, maybe some basic online no GaaS shit and you'd be fricking golden.

I want a Burnout game with Twisted Metal mechanics. Crash into cars and fire guns at the other racers.

No one remembers Full Auto 2 🙁
It had one of the best soundtracks for any car fame

you mean point and click? They are very much alive, you just dont recognize them because they arent point and click anymore. How do you making a point and click game on console with a mouse? you make a walk and interact.
Pic related is a good example

There are several genres that have been made niche because of their communities' autism. Platformers, RTS and fighting games come to mind.

Yeah, but name a genre that's "completely dead", as in it hasn't had a game in at least 3 years

        ???
Platformers are still incredibly common, anon. Just not as big-budget AAA games.

    Point and Click adventures
Yes, I know Return to Monkey Island came out recently, but it felt more like a last "hurrah" game rather than a "we're back!" game.
Even the ending is all an allegory for letting go of past memories

    True stealth games.
IGI Origins was supposed to bring it back, but it was cancelled, rip. Last good stealth game I can think about is MGSV TPP (in terms of gameplay). Although Intravenous 2 is coming out soon so there's something to look forwards to.

    >uhh actually that genre isn't dead sure it used to get AAA releases yearly and have thousands of players and now it gets one fan game every decade so it's still alive

3D platformers are dead, but there's still quite a few being made despite low interest from players.
If you're selling a game, (especially one on PC), making a game in a genre that has perceived maturity and gameplay depth is the only way forward. Growth and an emphasis on systems instead of mechanics. That is to say, surival games, 4X, non-linear shooters, RPGS, deckbuilders and roguelites are the only genres you can make these days.

      >4X
What? How the frick is 4X more common than 3D platformers? And FPS is easily the most popular indie genre right now, and it's all about gameplay

I'm talking more about demand compared to revenue.

The overabundance of Open World and Metroidvania has really helped me appreciate more linear games. Sometimes I just want a concise experience where I'm forced down a hallway.

Shoot em up platformers. I know a new Contra and an indie Contra game has been announced but they barely given any attention and Metal Slug is MiA.

      >Beat em up
SoR4 and Shredder'r Revenge sold like hot cakes and Sega already announced a new one + Golden Axe so expect more stuff in the future.

"God games" like Populous and Black & White, never got many of them to begin with and that's a shame.
