Inherently wrong. I was playing EverQuest at launch and it had more than its fair share of attention seeking prostitutes who played up the role to the guild simps (which there were plenty).

There was really a tremendous amount of change. What would you like to know specifically?

This was more or less the social media effect and more specifically gaming related, it was the time of the wider exposure to normalgaydom for better or worse. There were lots of elements involved here, such as the arrival of "XBros" with the Xbox who were basically the frat bro stereotype who played Madden and FPS, their first online gaming experiences etc. Marketing changed from the kids-first focus of the 90s, but being a "hardcore" gamer was still somewhat geeky niche; the "loser virgin who spills his spaghetti talking to, cums in cargo shorts if given the chance to hoverhand" demographic was marketed to but somewhat negatively by the industry with stuff like booth babes and "fake Gamer GRRL" personas. Consoles were evolving and going online but there were a lot of solid games in the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era, and then of course the following PS3/X360/Wii was a significant iteration in all cases. PC gaming evolved in huge ways - at the start of the 2000s gaming PC hardware could be expensive and even a $3000 rig may not be able to push high settings on what would come in the near future. Dial up was still a commonality and broadband was expanding but it was mostly DSL and Cable; websites where they asked about your hardware and connection would often have a pulldown for your connection speed with the fabled ISDN/T1/T3 at the top, going all the way down to a 9600 or 14.4 modem! Some genres really took off around this time too, notably MMOs where people were looking for virtual worlds - and in the West, the vast majority of them had NO microtransactions or item mall shit at all if you paid for a subscription! EverQuest, Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Asheron's Call, Shadowbane Final Fantasy XI, WoW...and many more worked this way, especially early on. Cosmetics were an equal part of the game, as it should be! Out of room...

PC games were pretty niche, you really needed to be a self sufficient gen x or have someone in your family that could afford/required a pc

tech was upgrading at a phenomenal rate and it was almost impossible to keep up

many memories of just launching games at sub 20fps such as farcry to just see how stunning it was resolution wise

I dunno about that, everyone I knew had a PC and I mostly played on the PC.

Commercial PC game development was definitely struggling, though, because of piracy. Game devs tried adding a lot of inventive and absolutely dreadful DRM to their games. But then when services like Steam came out, it turned out that people not wanting to pay wasn't actually the problem, it was the lack of convenience in having to acquire a physical copy vs just downloading something.

            >phasmo
yeah the changes are hard at first, main thing is you have to turn off your equipment when you hide now. Kinetic are unironically devs of the decade
they're adding 60 new items next month, completely overhauling the progression system with tiers of gear you unlock

            >deep rock
eh i'd take that over straight up abandoning their 5 year old game. if it was an AAA development wouldve stopped 6 months in.
its still the best first person shooter in the last decade. 400 hours in it, will easily sink another 400 hours.

both games were great $15 pickups that i'll sink 1000 hours into each, in a time where most games are $100, buggy, contentless trash with no replay value.
            fricking Starfield is $130.
            $130 fricking dollars.
AAAs need to lay off the meth

      A: = floppy
      B: = floppy
      C: = hard disk

2 floppy drives were standard on older computers because hard drives were expensive and optional so you'd have your program running on the disk in A: and then save your data to the disk in B:. Through the 90's, it became less common but was still useful for things like directly copying from one floppy to another (affordable CD-R, Zip, and USB flash drives weren't until the end of the decade). On a computer good enough to run Half-Life 2, there was no real reason to have 2 floppy drives installed unless you wanted to give your friends a chuckle when they first saw your system, and 2 disc drives were a much more usual configuration.

        >E: 2gb hdd
        >F: 4x DVD burner

my E drive was mostly random file storage, so i could unplug it to plug in a 2nd DVD burner if i wanted so I could burn copies of discs directly instead of needing hdd space buffer
bought that PC for $30 and it lasted me the whole early-mid 00s.

I'm like 90% sure that B: was originally for 5.25" drives. Either way, I've been using PCs since like 1995 and I've never seen a double floppy setup. In the 90s-00s it was always either one floppy or a CD+floppy setup. Schools, libraries, kids I was friends with, and myself too.

A lot better. The industry had gotten big enough for major money to be flowing in, but everything was still being made by talented enthusiasts. Even the bad games were decent. Graphical advancements felt legitimately ground breaking. Technically right before the 2000s, but I'll never forget being with my cousin in a Software Etc. and seeing a Dreamcast for the first time, it might as well have been a time machine. Those leaked shaky cam videos of New Mombassa and the G-Man tech demos. Just a crazy time where franchise-making new releases were coming out constantly, and everything was hype.

Then one day Capcom made Resident Evil 5, and people began to complain that a zombie game set in Africa featured black zombies, and that was the beginning of the end. It spread slowly at first, but it just got bigger and bigger until it consumed everything. The entire industry used to laugh at and mock someone like Jack Thompson, but now there's a Jack Thompson writing every video game in America.

    >Free
    >100s of players on one map
    >multiple servers with different maps/modes
    >Bug Hunt, my favorite mode. Think isometric AvP. Required coordination by the marines, constant masses ambushes by the aliens, but it also allowed skilled players to wreck shit.
    >Bullets were slow, almost at bullet hell speed, so you could dodge them.
    >Game was jank so you had vision glitches where you could hide even if marines were looking at you
    >so most fights were just team fights with shit everywhere, but occasionally you could pop off and turn an entire fight yourself
    >same with marines, a good sarge (abusing double summon) could take objectives from a full team (15 rines vs 40+ skrall)
    >eventually got gud enough to knife fight aliens to death

People have paid for and consumed entertainment for as long as humans, money, and entertainment have existed, but obese 4chins types have decided that consumption is some new evil. As far as I can tell, this is mainly rooted in poverty, with most 4chinners living on public assistance or parental allowance (even as adults), and becoming embittered towards people who can afford to eat out and see a movie. 9/11 changed everything.
        Mostly for the worst.

Its more than that though, I mean the technology too. It's kind of hard to describe but for example the rise of GL video modes opposed to software rendering. Playing stuff like Quake 2 with colored lighting, it was awesome. Nowadays the big thing is resolution boosts, framerate, response time increases but I dont feel the same big advancements in technology.

Really bad and most people got through it by just playing WoW and ignoring everything else. In retrospect that might partially be why games were so bad then, because WoW devoured everything, that and normalgays becoming the target audience for games thanks to xbox garbage.

Your step Dad might be 33, but you obviously aren't. The Gaystation was the homosexual dudebro console for people who actually played sports games, along with dumb shit techlets who legitimately thought the Emotion Engine was going to "unlock its full power in a few years". You were always the casual trash, and still are.

            >The Gaystation was the homosexual dudebro console for people who actually played sports games
Sports games have never hurt anything, that has no effect on other games. This is insane revisionism. Pic related wasn't sony's fault, it wasn't because of madden or sim racers, it was because of the xbox making low quality braindead games for idiots.

No, I don't want to see your Dad's old gameboy. Halo was a great game that was universally beloved (except by HL2 cultists) that you've retroactively decided was bad because you grew up in an era when 343 was shitting the bed, and not the era when Halo was getting 11/10s, reviving LAN culture, and carrying a console on its back .

The PS2 was the console for low brows who listened to rap and said "bro" and all the rest of it. I legit can't believe there are homosexuals on Ganker trying to tell me that the xbox was more "mainstream" than PS2, Jesus. The Xbox barely moved 10 million units before the 360 was rushed out. Last (you), go ahead and post some more stupid shit, then borrow your Dad's gun and stick it in your mouth. "Bu-but a dorito commercial", you dumb homosexual.

It was fun. People were nice with each others and everyone was exceited about new technologies and the progress of gaming. Games were more daring, there was a lot of variety and there was no DLC bullshit, there were expansions but they added hours of new content so it was worth the money.

Now is the same goyslop every fricking year. They sell you unfinished games as "early access" that they never fully release. There is DLC for every single fricking thing, gatcha shit everywhere, and they sell you "skins" for almost the price of the full game. If you were in the know it was really frustrating, multiplatform games really started to take off after 2002, so everything had to be developed on the lowest common denominator. Xbox had way less power than the other consoles, so all of the sudden everyone else's games started looking worse. Everyone had a mostly unique library before that. Its why games are so unfinished now, trying to work on too much at once.

PS2 had a much faster renderer than Xbox, by a lot. Look at literally any game that had to run on PS2 and Xbox and then a game that had to run on PS2 only, it was constant downgrade. PS2 was a custom gaming computer, Xbox was the cheapest computer Microsoft could get for $150.

When gaming went corporate. Xbox charged for multiplayer and it was worse than what everyone already had for free, and drones slurped it up so they could play Halo. Microsoft bought out Sega so even if you had a Dreamcast you had to go get this other console just to play games you already bought the Dreamcast for. Microsoft had no idea how to ship a finished game so they just decided they would patch everything like they do with Windows so we got "consoles" that were really just PCs with a hard drive and unfinished games. They removed two levels from Splinter Cell after they were already done and sold it as an unlock on Xbox Live.

I fell for the AMD is good meme and used 6900 XT for two years. It was fricking miserable.
The only people saying AMD is good is people who only use it for the most normie AAAslop games on the market or are too blind to notice the issues. If you play any game that AMD didn't specifically release a game ready driver for, you WILL have a bad time and awful frametime spikes. It wasn't the case of the card being slow, this shit happened at 50% and 99% GPU usage just as often.
After upgrading to nvidia when RTX 40xx dropped all of those problems disappeared. I don't know how little you have to value your time and game experience if you are ok with dealing with AMD's nonsense to save $50-100 in mid-end and $200 in high end.

The rule of thumb is that if ATI Tray Tools supports it 100%, it's a decent GPU. Something fricky happened around the tropical lineup after the HD 6000s, and AMD (formerly ATI) just fricking lost their edge. Sad! But unironically, the 9800 and 4890 were some of the most insane values ever, and they actually kept up with Nvidia without any excessively bad driver issues. Yet

My 7950 just kept melting it's VRMs because Sapphire had shit yields and shipped it a lot more overvolted than most BIOSs, but this entire gen was a power hungry overvolted mess, that ASIC tester was made in response to just how cheap that gen felt, fricking 49%

That .Net driver revamp was bad, but ATT let you mitigate the bullshit that was early CCC, but AMD removed a bunch of API hooks and other shit that made it work. Same deal with Radeonpro and MPT
