    wacky combinations of items
just want to load up a new run after the last to see what kind of cool shit you can get going, and then you get sucked into a run and repeat. Proof that a game can have the simplest gameplay loop and be good.

only roguelike that accomplished the thing every roguelike tries to do and actually be infinitely repayable i have at least 1000 hours and still learn new shit to this day almost every other roguelike feels like you got everything out of it in the first 3-4 runs or even worse just isn't fun to fricking play

It's the unlocks man, at first you get like 5-10 achievements per run so the happy accomplishment hormone goes crazy, them you discover how crazy things go when mixed and then you notice you just spent the last 4 days trying to get that mark for that character you just can't enjoy but your brain needs to see that unlock screen one more time untill all post-its are complete and alm challenges are done.

It has an absurd amount of build variety.
Granted getting that build is almost pure RNG, but typically in every run you are getting a different experience. Sorta true
Slay the Spire is excellent but once you figure out the few builds each character had designs in mind by the devs, that's it.
Enter the Gungeon took me a very long time to beat/collect everything and I loved it throughout, but it is not infinitely replayable. On repeat playthroughs you get bored of the areas and there are simply too many guns that suck. Giving the chests tiers was a terrible decision, it should have been completely random and maybe instead of keys you could spend casings to increase chance of rarity tier drop if you're trying to collect certain guns. As it stands I just avoid/break brown common chests.
Risk of Rain 2 plays the best and is seemingly infinitely replayable not because of the combinations or amount of content, but solely because they don't cap your power to stack into infinity. This makes it always fun as hell to play but you WILL get bored at Max power and end up killing yourself to end the run after 3-4 hours of curbstomping the game.
Isaac is infinitely replayable, definitely. It's got the infinite meaningful combos down and the sheer multitude of content keeps it fresh. But is it the most fun? Not by a long shot. Its actually one of the most shit to play because it's awkward, clunky, and so many negative items can make it a chore to play or ruin runs.

      Sounds like a personal problem
I get all good runs unless I'm playing some stupid Real Hard Core Gamer takes 4x damage and every time you get hit all of your items turn into a new item added that is just an all stats down

Only AB and AB+ bloated the item pools, Repentance came and fixed that by adding actual synergies for lots of items (God bless Killburn by making onions milk a good item).

Hope future updates are about improving the same.

isaac, for me, is a game that's entirely defined by its level of player agency.
contrary to what a lot of people say, isaac is unparalleled in the amount of ways the player can influence a run for the better.
sure, most of it is arcane, obscure, or unintuitive, but that just makes it all the more rewarding to understand and master.
it's not a game for everyone, but it's a game for me and i love it.

      Anonymous

Yeah, the thing that keeps me from going back to Isaac is that it's just not very fun to play in its base form. Isaac's default tears feel awful to use, and 90% of the enemies in the first few floors are passive damage sponges that walk away from you, often while spawning more enemies. It's a total chore before you get some power-ups. So I tend to fall into this trap of instantly restarting over and over if I don't get something interesting in my first two treasure rooms.

This. It got way too long, which in addition to being unfun to sit down and play, also made it even more annoying when you got a shit run - but not shit enough to die in the first few floors, because you're a decent player and can clear them with any build - and just lose all that progress, or get tempted to reset. When I'm almost always tempted to reset even though I have like 1000+ hours combined with the original and rebirth, something has seriously fricking gone wrong.

in a world where games have become more and more like movies, its nice having something that is pure gameplay with a ton of replay value. core gameplay is simple but good, random layouts keep it fresh, but really its success it about the items (collecting, unlocking, trying to make a run work, etc)
