This. Sony turned into a movie game company, consoles became low spec gaming PCs that focused on the same handful of multiplats without the smaller AA and A titles to give them an identity, and indie pixelslop first came to prominance.
It was really Uncharted 2 that set that into motion in a big way, but at least it Resistance 2, inFamous and Killzone 2 had enough game surrounding the cinematics.
7th gen did have middleware games, at least he early 7th gen. it was around 2010-11 when I noticed less middleware games. It was the late 7th - 8th gen when gaming became either AAA or indie.
People then were saying games took themselves too seriously and that they were becoming slow pace cutscene slogs with drab color palettes. There were increasing complaints about midsize companies with good games being bought out by the big publishers and turned into sequel-mills.
This list is padded with some huge disappointments, games that shelved their series forever, and games that basically killed the companies that made them. Like Fable 3, Halo ODST, Crackdown 2, Skate 3.
You say that, but these sequels still only took 2 or even 1 year to come out in some cases. Nowadays you just don't get a sequel at all, and you're still playing skyrim and gta v.
I still remember crowding in front of a small crtv with 4 guys with pre-defined rolls to get through those firefight rounds. And the other vidmaster without the warthog. It was worth the price for that.
Milennial here. When I look at this image I'm just reminded of how shitty everything was. Bioshock was pretty good and Skate was kind of neat, but Halo has always fricking sucked and CoD4 was the beginning of the end for FPS games. I guess every generation has nostalgia for when they were kids, but nostalgia for gen 7 really baffles me because almost nothing that made the previous gens good carried over. I guess people who were kids then and had no frame of reference would enjoy it, but still.
If you didnt spend your teenage years playing shit like Chromehounds, Gears of War, Halo 3 or CoD4 with your friends you absolutely missed out. Not only that but you probably missed out on being a 12 year old getting roped into skype calling older women who played FFXI with you and jerking off for them. It was 1080p at 60Hz but had DVI so compared to those early shitty LCD monitors it was like dream.
Everyone was scrambling to get hardware that can like run games at such resolution and 60fps.
AMD had the 6000+ Athlon x2 black edition while intel was selling core 2 duos and quads. q6600 was my roommates cpu at 2.4GHz. He didn't have balls to overclock because it was like a $500 cpu in a $2000 computer.
Dual cores at 3GHz (like my overclocked Athlon x2 4800+ be) were much better in all games.
I had an Ati Radeon 3650 256MB and only 2GB of ddr2 ram.
But Dragon age origins even at 720p barely worked. So I got 2 more sticks of 1GB ddr2 and a HD5670 1GB.

I was born in a Protestant community but not so long ago I went to rehab that was run by Catholics and started by a nun. I was always just raised as a Christian, not really picking sides but I didn't know much about Catholicism.
I live amongst mostly Catholics now and many of them I consider to be my best friends. I won't go into too much detail, but the nun who started the rehab I went to is a living Saint, helping men and women overcome addiction on this island (and beyond since all are welcome, British, Polish, etc, doesn't matter what you are, who you are, or what you had done). Another Catholic man I met following my time in rehab has been a blessing to me, another living Saint that does nothing but live selflessly and help the sick and misfortunate.
I don't really care about Catholic or Protestant. Myself and another Protestant man I met in rehab who was in a great deal of pain and crippled due illness would go for a walk in the evening there and say a prayer at the statue of Mary, not necessarily to her but just to God. Funnily enough, looking back we are both named after the fishermen and first two disciples. I always recall asking him how he felt about being in a Catholic place and his answer was 'We are all one in Christ'. I still have a ways to go, I guess everyone on earth does until your life here on earth is over but my belief is that it's not the end. Not here to preach or be a Bible basher either that's just my journey.
Still pretty early days for me. It's just my personal belief based on my life experience, I'm not one for arguing or shoving it down people's throats. I could sit here all day and write my life story but just some things that have happened I can't explain and I came to have Faith, that's about it really. Lately it has given me a lot more peace than I can explain, I was always terrified of the apocalypse and rapture, whether it was going to happen or not and living in uncertainty but lately I have felt a sense of peace and I thank God for it.

It's weird how every other decade up to the 90s has a definite start and stop. And I was enjoying probably gaming's best era. The variety coming out was insane, not just in terms of mechanics but aesthetics. A dozen or so shooting games that opted for a brown/gray color pallet doesn't define the era, and some of those games were actually incredible, like Lost Planet 2 and Resistance 3.
PS1/N64 had the biggest number of GOAT games, but PS2 era was probably the best overall. PS3 era was decent, but it also had absolute garbage like AssCreed that eventually became the norm in modern games.

7th gen was to gaming what the late 90s-mid 00s was to music: objectively shit but was still fun and nostalgic. in the end that's all that matters really, just fun with the bros and enjoying life. it's just not the same anymore. whether the games are good or not, it just doesn't have the soul anymore.
Gaming in the mid 2000s was great but what was special was that it was the peak of community size on the internet while keeping some of that hobbyist engagement. After that era, the population of gamers kept growing but the passion for games went down. It's why the golden age of MMOs and multiplayer games only existed at that point, every game had its own hardcore dedicated community. People LOVED games back then.

We never had something like a 'true' Planetside 2 or another MMOFPS for example or MMOs 'expanding' in a serious way or any other similar projects due to console focus. GTA was one of the best games of all time. It was basically a tech demo with a good story. Left 4 Dead was a blast either on the xbox or PC and TF2 was still really fresh for that matter. Halo 3 was as well, and CoD 4. Guitar Hero 2 Rock Band was the shit , especially Rock Band because it was interesting for more than just the people playing it unlike something like Halo. We were just spoiled with the 360 games, and Xbox Live was a blast, people were just letting loose. Because I was in middle school going into high school everyone had a goofy young teen energy where staying up till 4am playing together, eating microwavable mac and cheese and drinking mountain dew were totally doable and were just how we spend weekends and all of summer '08. I can't stress this enough, it was the quintessential gaming period idealization. Nobody was bitter or ironic, politics weren't a huge deal to anyone my age, the word "meme" was just starting to leak out of the internet. I was the first of my friends to say the word out loud correctly (not "me-me")
It was a really good time, even though was a recession and my family was splitting up thru a divorce. We had so much fun.

It really feels like the last great hurrah of a better era of gaming. It came in at the tail end of a golden age bringing with it all the lessons learned from the late-90s and early 2000s to create a truly optimized experience.
Then capitalism came and did what it does best and corporate committees finally noticed how profitable video games had become and took over everything redirecting all efforts towards making CoD style shot-lived skinner boxes that chase short term profits rather than any attempt to create anything meant to last or have an active community. Making TF2 and all games that waved the same banner obsolete in the eyes of shareholders.
There will never truly be another game like TF2 with a complete subculture that would bleed into online culture for years and years. The modern corporate climate would never allow it. Oh sure there have been games that turned out to be huge hits that had lasting impact on internet culture but never as long lived as TF2 and never as widespread. Satisfactory is different cause of the tiers. It feels like beating a boss when you unlock the next tier. And even making spaghetti factories is fun as shit. This. Sony turned into a movie game company, consoles became low spec gaming PCs that focused on the same handful of multiplats without the smaller AA and A titles to give them an identity, and indie pixelslop first came to prominance.
It was really Uncharted 2 that set that into motion in a big way, but at least it Resistance 2, inFamous and Killzone 2 had enough game surrounding the cinematics.
7th gen did have middleware games, at least he early 7th gen. it was around 2010-11 when I noticed less middleware games. It was the late 7th - 8th gen when gaming became either AAA or indie.

Dual cores at 3GHz (like my overclocked Athlon x2 4800+ be) were much better in all games.
I had an Ati Radeon 3650 256MB and only 2GB of ddr2 ram.

I was born in a Protestant community but not so long ago I went to rehab that was run by Catholics and started by a nun. I was always just raised as a Christian, not really picking sides but I didn't know much about Catholicism.
I live amongst mostly Catholics now and many of them I consider to be my best friends. I won't go into too much detail, but the nun who started the rehab I went to is a living Saint, helping men and women overcome addiction on this island (and beyond since all are welcome, British, Polish, etc, doesn't matter what you are, who you are, or what you had done). Another Catholic man I met following my time in rehab has been a blessing to me, another living Saint that does nothing but live selflessly and help the sick and misfortunate.
I don't really care about Catholic or Protestant. Myself and another Protestant man I met in rehab who was in a great deal of pain and crippled due illness would go for a walk in the evening there and say a prayer at the statue of Mary, not necessarily to her but just to God. Funnily enough, looking back we are both named after the fishermen and first two disciples. I always recall asking him how he felt about being in a Catholic place and his answer was 'We are all one in Christ'. I still have a ways to go, I guess everyone on earth does until your life here on earth is over but my belief is that it's not the end. Not here to preach or be a Bible basher either that's just my journey.

Still pretty early days for me. It's just my personal belief based on my life experience, I'm not one for arguing or shoving it down people's throats. I could sit here all day and write my life story but just some things that have happened I can't explain and I came to have Faith, that's about it really. Lately it has given me a lot more peace than I can explain, I was always terrified of the apocalypse and rapture, whether it was going to happen or not and living in uncertainty but lately I have felt a sense of peace and I thank God for it.

Much better than now (okay, not a high bar as alone would guarantee this) but the blatant pandering to consoles and the first billion dollar sales raised red flags for me even back then. The difference is we still had genuinely entertaining games on the market and you could reasonably had hope for a better future. PS1/N64 had the biggest number of GOAT games, but PS2 era was probably the best overall. PS3 era was decent, but it also had absolute garbage like AssCreed that eventually became the norm in modern games.

GTA was one of the best games of all time. It was basically a tech demo with a good story. Left 4 Dead was a blast either on the xbox or PC and TF2 was still really fresh for that matter. Halo 3 was as well, and CoD 4. Guitar Hero 2 Rock Band was the shit , especially Rock Band because it was interesting for more than just the people playing it unlike something like Halo. We were just spoiled with the 360 games, and Xbox Live was a blast, people were just letting loose. Because I was in middle school going into high school everyone had a goofy young teen energy where staying up till 4am playing together, eating microwavable mac and cheese and drinking mountain dew were totally doable and were just how we spend weekends and all of summer '08. I can't stress this enough, it was the quintessential gaming period idealization. Nobody was bitter or ironic, politics weren't a huge deal to anyone my age, the word "meme" was just starting to leak out of the internet. I was the first of my friends to say the word out loud correctly (not "me-me")
It was a really good time, even though was a recession and my family was splitting up thru a divorce. We had so much fun.

It really feels like the last great hurrah of a better era of gaming. It came in at the tail end of a golden age bringing with it all the lessons learned from the late-90s and early 2000s to create a truly optimized experience.
Then capitalism came and did what it does best and corporate committees finally noticed how profitable video games had become and took over everything redirecting all efforts towards making CoD style shot-lived skinner boxes that chase short term profits rather than any attempt to create anything meant to last or have an active community. Making TF2 and all games that waved the same banner obsolete in the eyes of shareholders.
There will never truly be another game like TF2 with a complete subculture that would bleed into online culture for years and years. The modern corporate climate would never allow it. Oh sure there have been games that turned out to be huge hits that had lasting impact on internet culture but never as long lived as TF2 and never as widespread. It's just not possible in this day and age.

Satisfactory is different cause of the tiers. It feels like beating a boss when you unlock the next tier. And even making spaghetti factories is fun as shit. It does get maybe a bit tedious in late game running around building a massive factory. I think they have updates coming that makes some of that easier tho.
