It was the composer being as much of a reactionnary old fart as you could expect for a Japanese person of his age, it was never that big a deal and it wasn't specifically a DQ XI thing, he worked on the whole series.
morons get hard-filtered by the act 2 > 3 transition as JRPG players are pretty obnoxious. That's all, but I wouldn't call it "controversy", that's just dumb.
Is that the double fight? I remember i was surprised how hard it was compared to the rest of the game before that. i dont remember who you fight but it was 2 fight after another and the 2nd one was way harder than anything before that
I think there were only two things people were 'uppity' about, Slyvando being 'Gay' and spoiler:
TIme travel shenanigans, there's a point in the game, maybe the last 1/4 or 1/3rd of the game where the villan fricks the party and the world so bad the only want to fix it is to travel back in time.
These are the only things I can recall someone having issues with, that and you can also marry your own sister, and she even says so before you fully decide: 'Well I am your sister but if that's how you feel about me then ok....' Other than that, the game was pretty good.
Sylvando isn't just gay, he doesn't fit and is annoying. Him being "gay" is just surface-level. And hero and Jade aren't related, just close. I don't recall her specific dialogue but you can choose your grandpa, too, as that choice isn't marriage, it depends on the character. Or is this a boo-boo with the Eng translation where Jade says she's his sister? Because, they aren't related, they make this clear very early on.
>manly >runs the frick away from home and refuses to go back until strongly coerced by Eleven with the entire world on the line to do so
Nah
I like Sylvando but nah, he's a giant coward
I will have none of this Sylvando slander.
It's ironic you bring up "surface level" when yours is just surface level hatred for what you perceived to be a gay character
He pulls his weight and helps the group, he will forever be an honorary aryan

Yeah the forced LGBT shit was just annoying.
Can't wait to see how bad the next DQ game is...
You tourists stink from a mile away.
This character archetype isn't "gay" in your western alphabet sense and there wasn't anything controversial about him.
Let me guess, Kanji and Naoto from Persona 4 is also gay and controversial? Or you didn't play that game either?
The only legit problem people have with DQ is the localization. Most noticably the name changes, which make 0 sense.
Martina > Jade
Camus > Erik etc.
>Slyvando being 'Gay'
I liked Sylvando, he was funny. That being said, he also had a personality outside of being a giant flaming homosexual, so maybe that's why I like him
>My agenda-driven, libtard friend begs me to play DQ11. >Sylvando joins my party. >"ISN'T HE JUST THE COOLEST GAY CHARACTER YOU EVER MET?" >Bench him the entire game, skip his dialogue whenever it pops.
The only controversy I can recall is that there was a rumor that it would be an action game rather than turn-based. There's the same rumour about 12 and hopefully it's bullshit this time too.
I only remember the shitposting because of the different versions and people said the 3DS one was the definitive version. Basically it was shitposted by moronic consolewarriors until eventually the definitive edition made it to all platforms.
-Bad localization coz they re-wrote it and gave everyone scottish accents. It's not set on planet earth, it sounds fricking stupid.
-Bad music, and i don't mean the orchestra/composer controversy - the compositions are absolutely terrible
-Incredibly tiresome and generic quest
Emulating isn't difficult in the slightest. The pixel remaster versions of the the first 6 FF games are much better than playing them on NES and SNES emulators. The same would be true for a remaster of DQ's 3rd and 4th generation games.
>better graphics >quality of life features >fixed mechanics >balance changes >more accurate translation
What do the original versions have other than your nostalgia?
All that shit you mentioned isn't an improvement most of the time, it just waters down the original experience. It's like taking something that was historically loved and diluting it as much as possible so tourists can check it off their backlog and see it as an average game that they will never play again. "quality of life" does not mean better, otherwise those games would have had most of those things in the first place and usually they chose not to even if they were technically able.
Not really.
The Pixel Remasters are approximations of their original releases in a unified style. This is fine for FF, where most rereleases of FF prior had fairly needless or not that notable additions (though the loss of FF2's extra scenario is felt), but for DQ that isn't as fine.
Approximation rereleases in particular would harm 4 and 5. With 4 it would revert the game back to its original NES combat, which kind of fricking sucked, and with 5 you would lose not just Deborah, but also Nera's redone introduction on the opening boat.
Anyways, this is besides the point in that these types of releases do exist. You can buy them or pirate them on you phone right now for DQ1-6.
Because you want to experience the game as originally intended instead of three decades of ports and "quality of life" upgrades to make it unbearably easy and nothing at all like the original games?

Why? I'd argue that a superior translation is more important to the original intent than outdated mechanics that were limited by the original hardware.

You have not beaten DQ1 if you played a version with true saving and the ability to walk up stairs without inputting a command.
You have not beaten DQ4 if you had full control over your party.
You have not beaten DQ5 if you had an orchestral soundtrack or the option to marry Deborah.
You have not beaten DQ4 or 5 if you had party chat.
You have not beaten DQ7 if the opening didn't take several hours.
You have not beaten DQ11 if you played it in English.

Literally nobody says this. 2 possibly because original is just that bad. 1 is absolutely broken and pixel remaster should not be played under any circumstances. Rest are passable but quantifiably worse.

slime farming locked behind pep ability because frick you
Made worse by the fact that in Draconian Quest they just straight up don't give you EXP if you used the pep power to turn enemies into Metal Slimes
There was a big uproar when it released about how it was a gay game with DEI characters and terrible boring fricking gameplay with a ridiculous soundtrack but the shills have drowned them out for a few years now. It's not even the real version of the game. Go learn japanese and play the 3ds game if you're such a die hard fan while you aren't playing VIII again and contemplating your eventual suicide.
Original release only had MIDI soundtrack because the composer was being overly protective of it.
Otherwise act 3 just sucks and ruins the entire game by deleting all of the character development from act 2 and also retconning some of act 1's stories (most notably the mermaid one if you chose to tell her the truth. And in exchange you get to do lesser versions of act 2's stories with worse bosses and get Veronica back(arguably the only good thing about act 3 but it wasn't worth sacrificing the rest).
For me it pretty much turned the game from a solid 8-9/10 to a 4/10 game.

literally get off of Ganker and never come back
Any game that is just good and universally liked will have a small vocal minority trashing it for stupid reasons. I remember one reason was that the soundtrack was too compressed or something. Or that it's too easy compared to other DQ games (read: you don't have to grind as much). Just learn to ignore those homosexuals.
it's universally liked by morons who never played a good rpg in their lives. it's honestly the most boring game I've ever tried to force myself through
What's boring about it? It's not a platformer or an open world action game, but it's pretty comfy JRPG.
There are a lot of builds that you can try out by respeccing characters
it has a fun crafting system
There is a lot to find in the world and exploration is rewarded via items and recipes.
The go to a new town, meet new person, fight new boss, story structure is very familiar and makes the game feel like an older anime.
Boss fights are challenging, and grinding is painless, even enjoyable because the different party builds, and auto-battle system.
The part members are all memorable and well-written…
For me it's a game I consume like a TV show. 30 minutes here or there is enough, and it's fun to slowly progress through. I have sat down and played it for several hours at a time, but it's not a game like CIV that you need to invest lots of time into in a single setting.
The only boring part is the music. Which is atrocious.
The PC version had better graphics.
Then they released extra content on the shittier looking console version and the shittier graphics got ported to PC.
The thing is the only positive thing in the game is the graphics. The story is one of the worst created. There are visible encounters and healing on level up making dungeons meaningless. The characters are absolutely obnoxious. The music is the same garbage it has always been. The character growth and 'alchemy' are terrible.
This is unquestionably the worst Dragon Quest game.
If you don't believe me at one point you help a guy who has been murdering dozens of people become loved by a city. The whole game is like this.
I agree about the dungeons and the graphics, but the story is nice and the characters are wonderful. The worst Dragon Quest game is probably 2 or 7.
>manly >runs the frick away from home and refuses to go back until strongly coerced by Eleven with the entire world on the line to do so
Nah
I like Sylvando but nah, he's a giant coward
Challenging your fathers expectations is tremendously hard, probably even more so when he's a well respected knight and you are a weird circus guy.

slime farming locked behind pep ability because frick you
Made worse by the fact that in Draconian Quest they just straight up don't give you EXP if you used the pep power to turn enemies into Metal Slimes
It's not harder that way, just grindier
Fights aren't particularly more difficult, I just gotta spend more time in those places where metal king slimes spawn instead
The songs are quality, but there are not enough for a 100+ hour game. It's so fricking repetitive.
But for a country that created Don Donki it's understandable.
>It's 2024 and people still haven't realized Sylvando isn't actually a homosexual, he's just the typical flamboyant japanese character
There's even a part during the game when you control him where he drop sthe flamboyant act and talks to his father with a normal tone of voice.
this. and traps aren't gay. and transitioning isn't gay. and fricking men in the butthole and cumming isn't gay. these fricking homophobic morons will never learn
Japanese people seem to have an obsession with time travel. That shit ruins all stories. There's no exception.
For example, during act 3, the writers try to imply that the heroes' personalities have been affected by the events of act 2. They vaguely remember things, without knowing why, but the player knows, it's because they went through things in act 2 before the time travel. It turns out that this is just an attempt to patch up a broken story, an attempt to say "hey, it's not like everything was done in vain and you abandoned all your allies and family" that simply doesn't work.
When Hero went back in time, he ceased to exist in that universe. He never sees his friends, his girlfriend, his mother again. He basically died for those people, leaving everything behind. This is proven by the simple fact that someone else had already done this time travel, and guess what, there was no "merging" of universes, the person just disappeared from the universe she were in.
That kind of shit ruins everything. If there are infinite worlds with infinite variations of the same story, then nothing matters.
when the hero goes back in time the sword of light shatters and irrc the sand ball cracks but doesnt fall apart completely. Its a timeline merge where they have vague impressions of things that happened before and that world ceases to be. When serenica goes back she uses the super sword of light, which remains in the world with them, and we see the world after that.
In fact, it has a certain complexity. You can search for some low-level battle videos and see that the strategies used in the battles are not trivial.
Dragon Quest works more or less like a simple card game. The luck factor is always present, but you can use cards that will increase your chances, and that's pretty much it.
Playing with restrictions, both those offered by the game and the self-imposed ones, forces you to be creative, but I personally don't think it's an intelligent kind of creativity, you'll often have to try out unlikely things on a trial and error basis.
In any case, there is complexity, although it's not obvious to super-casual players who are going to brute force the entire game
The controversy is that there is no controversy because it's Dragon Quest.
Act 3 is kind of trash after Act 2 I guess.
I remember there being controversy because the lead writer defended WW2 or some shit
It was the composer being as much of a reactionnary old fart as you could expect for a Japanese person of his age, it was never that big a deal and it wasn't specifically a DQ XI thing, he worked on the whole series.

The PC version of S has worse graphics than the original release and there's no way to bring your original save over.
It's too damn long even for a DQ game. A 150 hours just to finish the main quest, without touching all the other stuff.
my second playthrough was about 60-80 hours for the main quest, including act 3 iirc
The DS remakes are good but the FF remasters are terrible
Still yet to hear the brilliance of the pixel remaster cutting the iconic credits intro from 6
good point. can anyone articulate what the pixel remasters actually improved? accessibility? wow awesome
No.
I know I sure can't, because I only played the remakes. Great time
If you've only played the remakes how do you know they're good compared to the original?
I don't. I just said that I can't articulate what the pixel remasters actually improved. Are you illiterate?
You sound like the kind of tard that would play new n tasty instead of oddysee
I don't know what any of that means. Has your illiteracy caused you to be confused about the games that are being discussed?
Wow what a surprise, it's almost as if you don't actually play games. Now frick off.
But I do. I just said I played the pixel remaster games two posts ago. Man, you're really bad at following a conversation. Are you this poster, by chance?
>I don't know what any of that means.
literally get off of Ganker and never come back
Oh okay then please frick off from this conversation then, your input has no value
Any game that is just good and universally liked will have a small vocal minority trashing it for stupid reasons. I remember one reason was that the soundtrack was too compressed or something. Or that it's too easy compared to other DQ games (read: you don't have to grind as much). Just learn to ignore those homosexuals.
it's universally liked by morons who never played a good rpg in their lives. it's honestly the most boring game I've ever tried to force myself through
that Act 3 literally renders Act 2 pointless
They have a town full of obnoxious tourists Aussie accents. Everyone knows that Aussies are the most polite people in the world
I stopped playing in act 3. It wasn't bad, it just goes on so long. I keep meaning to go back and finish it.
toriyama's shit art style
>act 3 of DQ
>star ocean 3
>Danganronpa V3
Why japs like to do this kind of thing?
>300 years since v3
>plebs STILL filtered and crying
because they think it's a good plot twist.
Hell, the Episode Ardyn DLC of FFXV RUINS THE ENDING OF THE GAME and caused the existence the True Ending Novel to give the game a happy ending
V3 is great. It’s the 3 anime that’s the stinker.
>V3 is great.
not with that ending that shits all over the entire series
The game is a love letter to the series, you’re literally just too stupid to see it.
>a love letter
to scat fetishists, maybe, because they love getting shat on
>game is called bravely default flying fairy in Japan
>game is rename to bravely default where the fairy flies in the west
But why
because the way our languages work is different
This game is so goddamned boring. How do japs enjoy this shit after coming home from their 12 hour workday?
The DQ XI/XIS stuff makes Atlus look like an honest broker.
I liked dq11. Was really fun and enjoyed the story. Was not a big fan of act 3, but i still enjoyed the extra content.
Challenging your fathers expectations is tremendously hard, probably even more so when he's a well respected knight and you are a weird circus guy.
he should've just come out to his dad. I literally could not care less about his problems though
This game was a glass of room temperature water and a single slice of white bread.
room temperature water is the best way to drink it. coldgays can frick off.
>I made it harder why is the game harder
It's not harder that way, just grindier
Fights aren't particularly more difficult, I just gotta spend more time in those places where metal king slimes spawn instead
so its like the old dragon quest games
that means it is by definition more difficult, if you have to overlevel to clear it, it's difficult and you're playing like a pussy
What are your high hopes and worst fears for the next installment of DQ?
>high hopes
it's gonna be just another DQ and that's a good thing
>worst fears
none, ragebait doesn't phase me
>high hopes
continue being good
>worst fears
they stop being turn based
DQ died with IX
>high hopes
It's a good game with lots of content and the board minigame comes back
>worst fears
It's not a good game
i love the soundtrack, especially when they used an actual orchestra, there are a lot of pretty flutes 🙂
?si=QLFuvB5G-80qLY6D
The songs are quality, but there are not enough for a 100+ hour game. It's so fricking repetitive.
But for a country that created Don Donki it's understandable.
I like 10
I remember liking the DS one but got bored very quickly with 11
>It's 2024 and people still haven't realized Sylvando isn't actually a homosexual, he's just the typical flamboyant japanese character
There's even a part during the game when you control him where he drop sthe flamboyant act and talks to his father with a normal tone of voice.
this. and traps aren't gay. and transitioning isn't gay. and fricking men in the butthole and cumming isn't gay. these fricking homophobic morons will never learn
It's largely a manufactured controversy, by people who hate Sugiyama.
Did a patch or mod eventually come out that make definitive edition have the good lighting the original XI release had or is that still not in?

A long time ago.
The two time travels had different results because one sword of light broke and one didnt.
Explain this better
when the hero goes back in time the sword of light shatters and irrc the sand ball cracks but doesnt fall apart completely. Its a timeline merge where they have vague impressions of things that happened before and that world ceases to be. When serenica goes back she uses the super sword of light, which remains in the world with them, and we see the world after that.
I never played this DQ but my girlfriend played it when it was on gamepass during covid and I saw what happened mostly in between working from home.
I think the purple hair bawd in the bunny suit is hot as frick, I'm glad she got brainwashed to take fat monster schlong on the regular.
Its bad but low-IQ shitters keep saying its good because its simple (devoid of any deph and pretty much a walking simulator)
>deph
