Genuinely does not matter, no one but old sonic fans with stockholm syndrome are buying new sonic games, so no one with an intelligent opinion is reviewing them.
Reminder that the potential gaming market keeps growing over time. So Frontiers selling 3.5m today is far far far less impressive than the Sonic 3 & Knuckles tower was back when Sonic was still relevant as a videogame franchise and not just as some weird doujin category for furries and autistic manbabies.
Forces must’ve done HORRIBLY if they’re willing to list Lost World’s sales but not that one
I heard from someone who knew someone that worked at SoA wayyyyy back in 2017 that Forces had a pretty insane budget for a Sonic game (mostly marketing) and Sega was not happy with that shit at all
It always was. The only vocal poketards are the ones calling for a boycott of every new lazy entry. The vast majority of pokemon consumers will buy whatever mainline entry Gamefreak releases.
Pretty good sales numbers for Adventure and Adventure 2 given that they were stuck on the Flopcast and Flopcube. Not much of an install base to work with.
So after reading the article, which is very much real, the devs are just stumped at how Sonic is sold poorly in Japan while the west eats it up. In that case, I surmise an overwhelming majority of the sales came from the west.
I don't exactly remember where I saw it, but I once saw a japanese comment where it said that in Japan, Sonic is still viewed as for kids. In that case, I can see why Zelda and Armored Core sell, because it presents an all range demographics. Zelda's light maturity can still appeal to adults, and Armored Core's more mature aesthetic can also still appeal to kids because cool robots. I'm viewing this strictly through how the japanese might view it.
In essence, when compared to this chart of
>It (Sonic Adventure 3) would be a bigger deal than (...) half life 3
sonicgays actually believe this
, it's actually very promising. The fact that the devs are scratching their head over it instead of taking it into consideration is genuinely proof of business insight. Frontiers was starting to scratch that all around itch; all they need to do now is keep that up. Sonic already has a tarnished legacy, so expecting gangbusters just because you switch it up one time is genuinely a low IQ take.
If they were smart, they would acknowledge this, but this just leads me to think that Sonic may potentially never reach its true potential since everyone behind it seems to fundamentally misunderstand the position they're in and the franchise they're working with.
I know for a fact this shitpost this game sold less than 3 million is complete copium, butt I would surprised it sold a collective of 8 million copies, not saying I don't want that to be true.
It's honestly rather convenient SEGA made no attempts to admit just how much this game sold since we know at least it couldn't have been Sonic 4 tier because they were quick to try to make a sequel, and the only reason it wasn't made was Evening Star reasons with their game and being paid well to make a Mania 2, so they instead got Arzest to do it, which, reminder, was made with 3D assets and praised at 60USD, meaning something about Mania sold a lot more than they are telling else because they would never make another 3D classic styled game if they didn't trust that Mania sold like hotcase. I just want the truth, because realistically even if 1 and 2 were bundled with the Genesis, the classic games were the onyl games to sell 10x more than the 3D games on average historically.
Ouch. Is the reason no one buys classic Sonic games anymore is too many modernzoomers that hate 2D, the bad blood for 20 years where they replaced classic with modern Sonic, the bad blood making shitty 2D Sonic games that play nothing like S3K, or the fact fan games that do a decent job fillng the void of classic Sonic gameplay to the point the fans just don't need official classic Sonic games anymore?
I get the feeling there's far more classicgays than moderngays but moderngays are just far louder and saltier because, like the post you replied too, thinks their Sonic would be the biggest game ever made? I can't see how when the first two Adventures apparently sold like shit compared to Frontiers.
Actually that's impressive. >biggest sonic since S3
I saw kids with sonic shirts the other day. I didn't even know kids my age wearing sonic shit back in the 00s, that's how long sonic had been dead... suddenly it's around again and kids play it for the first time in decades.

You went from Pokemon never trying anything different to Gamefreak never trying anything different.
The thing about "Sonic Adventure 3" is no one is actually sure what that means exactly.
Do you actually want all of the shitty Knuckles gameplay, and everything? Do you want Tails walking around in a mech, doing slow shooting stages?
We have to break down what the brand of Sonic Adventure actually means to people first, and what they think they want for a third game, and whether or not that isn't just Chao Gardens.
The knuckles gameplay wasn't shitty I don't get this meme. He had great controls and movement and his levels were a nice change of pace while still keeping the speed aspect and staying true to the core gameplay. The tails missions on the other hand..
I honestly never got why people hated in the treasure hunter stages. They were always fun, had some neat ideas, and had the best music
The knuckles gameplay wasn't shitty I don't get this meme. He had great controls and movement and his levels were a nice change of pace while still keeping the speed aspect and staying true to the core gameplay. The tails missions on the other hand..
Best music and a nice change of pace from the speed stages.
Gamepaly means dogshit with shit levels and shitty encentive to any of it >Core gameplay
What's core to S3K? Him just gliding? Where's the slopes? Where's the use to momentum to vertically traverse walls? What about RNG is "core" to Knuckles' gameplay? You're full of dogshit.
His movement might be average video game quality but it still had shitty jank like getting stuck on walls (not something 06 invented btw) a shitty and pointlessly gimped radar, and the mere concept a suppose treasure hunter's only plot to the gameplay is locating 3 random spots in a range between a tiny ass map, a massive oversized map or a maze isn't as fun as other platformers with collecting invovled, considering 3 years prior you had an entire game that allowed you to collect 5 different stars, some of which didn't make you leave the level and those being the most fun to get because you get to keep playing the level instead of getting booted out. Which is why games like Banjo Kazooie ran with it. So why didn't the treasure hunter copy that style of level design instead of being constrained to shitty rng emeralds?
There's nothing good about Knuckles and there's absolutely nothing special about his gameplay where it couldn't be improved vastly.
NTA but I think an SA3 for me would be
Gameplay Wise >an evolution of the SA1/2 gameplay style for Sonic >Tails could utilize vertical level design in his SA1 style >Knuckles just needs to be designed around “harder” stages with a focus on climbing and beating up some enemies, maybe do what Dream Team does and in certain stages have a locked door with some “find the 3 keys” section in an explorable little sandbox area >Eggman I think should be playable, but whether it’s his SA2 mech stages which were admittedly decent, or something else I’m not sure >1 new playable character, preferably villain that teams up with Eggman
Story wise >A return to a focused narrative that weaves together. All the characters don’t have to be together all the time but rather weave in and out during certain areas. >Somewhat serious story. Kill the Pontiac happy tree friends and Ian Flynn “REDEMPTION!!!” shit, give me a story with the tone of Unleashed/Black Knight pls.
Oh and Chao Garden obviously. Don’t even need to change it just take SA2 Chao Garden, add in some QoL changes and extra minigames for the Chao
All of this would make an SA3 worth waiting for imo but I also feel like I’m asking for the very BARE minimum and I think Sonic Team will still frick it up
>if 06 was even just decent we would still be getting Adventure style games here and there but it terrified them to where they will never touch SA again
Wasn’t there a rumor that Sonic Adventure was being remade? And then the rumor kinda died off around 2020
I feel bad for From having to slop that shit out for mecha autists. You could tell they were deliberately restraining things so it didn't piss those autists off.
You could tell the level of competence there though regardless.
Unlike sonicgays that has been eating shit from the tap since the last years of the Sega Genesis.
It's a matter of quantity, Sonic really isn't that big of a name anymore, meanwhile there are millions of unhinged tendies willing to waste time arguing with people online about their latest game for kids below the age 3.
It's a franchise that hasn't been relevant for decades, outside of the autists who obsess over it and also jerk off and draw immense amounts of porn of it. It's a kid's game and kids don't play it anymore, kids haven't played sonic in a long time. Hell, even when I was a kid and the franchise was in its prime, I didn't like sonic games and preferred Mario and Zelda games, two franchises which are still going strong among kids today. Just let the blue hedgehog die.
Although I wasn't a fan of the filter it was in theme for what was happening to those characters. The game is kinda bare but so was shadow of Colossus and they both share an eeriness to them for the same reason. The civilizations that once flourished are gone. Personally I would have loved secret areas that would have you play remastered sonic spinball levels with an in theme twist.
Probably the fact that Frontiers was fricking shit. An absolute joke of a game with not a single redeeming factor.
Just lifting BotW concepts without understanding what made them good in the first place, randomly forcing them into sonic garbage, and everything falling apart at the seams into an unhinged mess.
And those fricking bosses were hilariously moronic. probably the worst bosses I've seen in well over a decade in video games.
What high energy action??
Those awkward janky cutscenes during bosses? That had the worst possible gameplay to cutscene transitions I've ever seen?
That was absolute trash.
>What high energy action??
NTA, but the flashy particle effect spammed everywhere with zero second punches and sword swipes, typical anime shonen trash with zero substance and meaning to any of it.
The fact that they're even asking this at all is part of the problem.
Frontiers wasn't them wanting to do a unique new spin on Sonic. It was them trying to ride on the coattails of a popular trend in the most blatant way possible. Nothing about the bland, foggy landscape of Frontier's overworld says "Sonic" to me.
It's not bad and it seems like they're really dedicated to polishing it into something special. My only real issue is the levels don't feel like something from Sonic. This formula but with a more Sonic themed art style and more interesting things to do than endless grind rails would probably be cool.
ToTK and AC6 are actual games. Frontiers is a fricking UE asset flip that controls horribly AND has all the bad things about open world games combined in it. It's like a combo of a bad Sonic game with a bad modern open world game. It's insane that anyone rated this game higher than 5/10.
JSR was in development at the same time as frontiers based off the leaks. It's more like mania showed that people still care about old games if they're willing to play a 2D game again
This game looks like a Dev Tech Demo. Even Sonic Dreams has more quality in their Stages.
They tried to cope with references (Movie, Comics) and updates but it's still mid. Cutscenes are poor, even 2006 had better cutscenes AND opening trailer.
Wait, genuinely? They're confused?
That's fricking incredible. I knew they were terrible game designers, but I had no idea they were THAT clueless. So they don't actually even KNOW why their games suck so bad? They think "Sonic Frontiers" of all things was comparable to "Tears of the Kingdom?!" What delusional morons.
I'm convinced this is just flavor dickshitting for shareholders. They've been in this game since the ass end of the 80s. Sonic Team can get the frick over themselves. I'd take my post here and fricking shove it right in there fricking faces if I could.
If you're gonna slash budgets and cycle out massive chunks of your own dev team, the least you can do is own up to it rather than giving us a Unity game and then wondering why it shuts the bed alongside industry juggernauts.
>few weeks ago headlines said Sega wanted sonic to be as big as Mario
Then blow all your fricking money and hire real talent for a REAL Sonic game rather than what I'm assuming is just Iizuka and friends making basically official Sonic fangames of middling quality at best.
SA and SA2 weren't really all that "fast". Sonic does best when the entire game isn't just a "look how fast you're going" showcase. Not that it's the only problem with Sonic Team's development philosohpy, they could fix that and it would still have a million other problems because they are fundamentally incompetent, and the world would be a better place if they were dissolved and the license to Sonic sold to another developer.
Frontiers has an identity issue and lifts way too many thing from other games, mainly Zelda.
Open world
Coco's are shameless Korok ripoffs, they even gave them little backpacks for the free DLC
Collecting the stars at night was a weird combination of the shooting stars from BotW and the spirit trials in Skyward Sword
Sonic slowly gets corrupted like Shadow of the Colossus
You have to climb enemies like Shadow of the Colossus
Weird combo based beat em up combat that turns into Bayonetta's wicked weaves during boss fights
I could go on and on but it's obvious they just made a list of video game memes from the past couple decades and thew it all at the wall hoping something would stick.
Levels that don't look like Unity store assets with tacked-on ramps floating in mid-air, for example.
Though anything Zelda is 90% brand recognition, that shit is a cult like Apple at this point.
Modern (for the time) banging music that truly corresponded to the stage and character
Different types of gameplay when doing the missions.
Being able to not just being the sonic heros crew but as the dark hoes too.
Rouge had a fat rack so it doubles the in-game time as a whole.
Having both good and evil work to fight something bigger (make a fun story like frontiers in its completed form)
Multiplayer is and was an innocent time without the expectation of anything but to just have fun with a friend or sibling. (Frontiers could a had online coop and have digital world affected the physical and vice versa.)
Chao garden brought a sentimental aspect to the game like a fun tamagachi pet from the 90s
The entire 3D lineage of Sonic should be thrown out and a new control scheme that isn't built around hand holding the player through preloaded levels the Dreamcast's competitors at the time couldn't handle should be designed instead.
Something that actually factors in momentum mechanics and rewards skillful control without multiple zero-to-top-speed acceleration buttons like the homing attack or boost. Grafting boost era controls onto a 3D environment is a shitty half measure and the linear levels + challenge courses built around self-playing chains of interactables like bumpers, boost pads, floating rings, etc should have been axed entirely. The franchise is eternally held back by a generation of man children (consumers and devs) still hung up on holding down to autorun from a fricking whale.
Nintendo and From have decades of good will at this point so people bought in to their new games. Sega, and in particular sonic team, have spent decades failing to get sonic working in 3D
Old bait thread aside, Sonic "devs" aka Kishitmoto should be asking "what does Dream Team and Mania/Superstars have that Frontiers doesn't"? Then they might get a clue and make a real Sonic game for once.
Good gameplay and cohesive worldbuilding? Like, what the frick is Soni doing in default Unity world? Why are there Sonic ramps and loop de loops in that world? Why do they work against exploration?
>Zelda games >Thousands of webms all over the place in non-Zelda threads >Sonic games >Only came across 2-3 since its release in non-Sonic threads
There's your problem, no one cares about Sonic
I still don't even know what the game looks like kek
I do not want a Sonic game to play like Tears of the Boredom nor do I want an entire game with Tails and Eggman in mechs like AC6. I want Sonic to be fricking Sonic. I want to run very fast to the god damn goal and I'm alright with some combat action beat em up sections but I mainly just want to run to the goal with good level design and good music. Simple as that.
Nintendo and From know what makes their franchises great and are able to deliver a good game in those franchises. Sonic Team don't know how to make a good Sonic game

Sonic 1 that high? But its not as good as Sonic 2. What happened?
IMPORTANT FOOTNOTES
>Sonic 1's sales is just the bundled Sega Genesis release (mobile version not included
>SA2's sales include both the Dreamcast and GameCube (Dreamcast was failing hard during this time).

Wasn’t there a rumor that Sonic Adventure was being remade? And then the rumor kinda died off around 2020
WHERE IS THE CHAO GARDEN
BRING IT BACK
BRING IT BACK
BRING IT BACK
BRING IT BACK
BRING IT BACK
Because they don't want to make chao garden 3 and they know with no chao garden, we riot.
Sonic 06 was the 3rd Sonic Adventure but the fans are still in denial about it.
To be literal with you
It doesn't state that it IS an adventure game. Devs know it was a rushed mess so why should we accept it?
>It wasn't called Adventure 3 it doesnt count!
Sonic fans... the stereotypes are real KEK
Sega could re-release Sonic ‘06 with zero fixes, change the title to Sonic Adventure 3, and Sonicgays would cum so hard they die.
What the frick is Sonic Adventure? You mean they need to make S3+K 2
>Sonic Adventure 3 & Knuckles
& Knuckles
Sonic Mania
Iizuka said he wants to make it but won't without Sega giving him the budget he wants.
Literally only autistic people are sonic fans, every sonic fan I've ever seen over the age of 10 (and many below) have autism. Why
furries
Sega accidentally discovered the secrets to creating memetic autism. The US and Japanese government keep it around for research.
The characters have easily read facial expressions, and they have different designs according to their unique personalities and abilities.
Autists like visual stimulation and repetition. They don’t want nuance or something that takes them out of their comfort zone.
You sound butthurt
Either that or they get horny over the furries.
ToTK has Nintendo Bonus
AC6 was actually a game
>AC6 was actually a game
And a terrible one too.
I feel bad for From having to slop that shit out for mecha autists. You could tell they were deliberately restraining things so it didn't piss those autists off.
You could tell the level of competence there though regardless.
terrible bait
>t. filtered by helicopter
If anything from soft went all in making the game a giant mecha homage
The number of mecha references is insane
>TOTK
Not made by Sonic Team.
>AC6
Not made by Sonic Team.
>Sonic Frontiers
Made by Sonic Team.
Iizuka and the rest of Sonic Team release 2 decades worth of shit, then genuinely wonder "what do other games have that ours don't?".
I can understand incompetence and cynicism, Gamefreak has made billions with them. But who can you go this long and still be utterly clueless?
Sonic Team is Gamefreak without a household brand like Pokemon.
>muh, sonic is a household name
Yeah, like Yoshi. Sonic can barely sell more than 3m.
If you put gamefreak devs to make Sonic and Sonic team to make Pokemon, the games would turn out the exact same.
>Woolly World
>Crafted World
I wish Yoshi would stop with these weird new takes,
Just wait til you see the OG, Mario World.
Passion, talent, competent devs, also some better sega devs that nintendo poached.
Zelda have an army of mentally ill manchildren that will eat shit right from the tap and ask for more.
AC6 have giant robots.
>an army of mentally ill manchildren that will eat shit right from the tap and ask for more.
no different from Sonic
It's a matter of quantity, Sonic really isn't that big of a name anymore, meanwhile there are millions of unhinged tendies willing to waste time arguing with people online about their latest game for kids below the age 3.
>consolewargay comparing Sega with Nintendo
Hello, time traveler, what did you think of the future so far?
Are you moronic bro?
The Nintendo games are still good.
Unlike sonicgays that has been eating shit from the tap since the last years of the Sega Genesis.
Sonic is equally as mediocre and gimmicky as Zelda.
They put Sonic in the game
Inherit bias, nothing could have been done.
fun
The "Gotta go fast" gimmick was all sonic had going for it.
I never understood why people liked Frontiers. It seemed kinda mid.
Have you played the updated version? Give it another go and have a ball. Doing those towers were fun af. Wished they did that more for the whole game
I did and it was just a bunch of slightly more difficult floating platforms with characters that had that eyesore glitch effect.
Was BOTW really that much of an inspiration for open world style games since its release?
It earned Elden Ring goty.
Probably the fact that Frontiers was fricking shit. An absolute joke of a game with not a single redeeming factor.
Just lifting BotW concepts without understanding what made them good in the first place, randomly forcing them into sonic garbage, and everything falling apart at the seams into an unhinged mess.
And those fricking bosses were hilariously moronic. probably the worst bosses I've seen in well over a decade in video games.
adhd zoomers loved it though. Have you seen the Frontiers-Revengence edits? Autists love this high energy action shit.
Tik of the tok just went with the breff of the wah proven formula, armored bore had "FROM" name attached to it.
Cope b***h
AC6 has soul
Something sorely lacking these days
Friendly reminder Forces sounded like it had a somewhat decent story early on
https://tcrf.net/Prerelease:Sonic_Forces_(Windows)
It's not bad and it seems like they're really dedicated to polishing it into something special. My only real issue is the levels don't feel like something from Sonic. This formula but with a more Sonic themed art style and more interesting things to do than endless grind rails would probably be cool.
The issue is your tissue
I wish we got a documentary on behind the scenes for 06 and Forces
>no shitty physics
>no moronic and edgy cartoony main character
>engaging gameplay
>good music
>no shitty physics
:I
ToTK and AC6 are actual games. Frontiers is a fricking UE asset flip that controls horribly AND has all the bad things about open world games combined in it. It's like a combo of a bad Sonic game with a bad modern open world game. It's insane that anyone rated this game higher than 5/10.
>controls horribly
Yes
>that controls horribly
Frontiers is probably the best Sonic's controlled in like a decade.
That's not saying much.
>Sonic Frontiers revives Sega's dormant IP's
I kneel SonicChads
source?
https://www.sonicstadium.org/news/sega/sega-sonic-the-hedgehog-success-forged-path-for-new-jet-set-radio-and-crazy-taxi-games-r1766/
JSR was in development at the same time as frontiers based off the leaks. It's more like mania showed that people still care about old games if they're willing to play a 2D game again
Ehhh, Sega seems to have forgotten Mania entirely, so yeah I think it may have been Frontiers actually selling that led to everything coming out.
That doesn't even make sense given the time frame it takes to develop a game
Well of course they have, because it's the latest in a long line of exhibits rubbing it in that Sonic Team fundamentally doesn't understand Sonic.
That's nice
Just wanted to pop in and say Dream Team was a lot of fun and I hope a lot of the concepts in that game makes it into the 3D ones
This is a studio that has produced nothing but complete garbage for 20 years straight.
I'm aware, but I didn't realize the moronation ran THAT deep. This is genuinely incredible.
It's funny how Forces had a large budget and long deadline and they still fricked it up. Sonic Team just needs to be replaced with new blood.
Sonic Team gets mogged by indie devs over and over again and refuses to learn any lessons from it.
Sonic as a concept fails miserably, is speedrunning mario. The problem is that most people are not moronic and dont want to speedrun mario
the world is sick of mario anyway, stale and shitty
SA and SA2 weren't really all that "fast". Sonic does best when the entire game isn't just a "look how fast you're going" showcase. Not that it's the only problem with Sonic Team's development philosohpy, they could fix that and it would still have a million other problems because they are fundamentally incompetent, and the world would be a better place if they were dissolved and the license to Sonic sold to another developer.
vs
>when games had soul
>glover
ALL OF THE DAY BRO
vs
>The only fast parts is literally cutscenes
Shit IP.
>20 year old doomwad
>good
>20 year old doom wad
>kino
that's right jay
>still copy pasting generations assets
Just make a a chao garden game.
A game that isn't about Sonic perhaps?
It was actually pretty good, but god was the third island completely fricked
Sage is also a dumb character. Giving Eggman a daughter feels like fake maturity.
Oh yeah you just reminded me how much Sonic rips off Evangelion too, but so does tons of other Japanese media.
The issue isn't the difference, it's that the game is being made by people who can't tell the difference
zelda has a stockholm syndrome fanbase that will gobble up any slop served in front of them
even if it's a CoD tier rehash
The issue is that the 1990s are over. Who the frick still cares about Sonic lol
most moronic take in the thread
I didn't take anything. I posted a fact.
Levels that don't look like Unity store assets with tacked-on ramps floating in mid-air, for example.
Though anything Zelda is 90% brand recognition, that shit is a cult like Apple at this point.
What adventure 2 was for me was this
Modern (for the time) banging music that truly corresponded to the stage and character
I dunno but AC6 is extremely well directed, it mixes cutscenes, gameplay with the soundtrack expertly.
Like how "Steel haze (Rusted Pride)" builds up, then kicks off when you start the mission. It's hype as frick.
It doesn't have a SINGLE character portrait, but the characters are loaded with personality and are just fun to think about and deal with.
It's easily the best anime of 2023.
having only seen these games in passing, the environments in frontiers are very unimpressive and generic
A GOOD PREQUEL
HAVE PUBLISHERS REALLY NOT REALISED THAT THE BEST ADVERTISEMENT FOR A GAME IS THE PREVIOUS GAME IN THE SERIES
TOTK HAD BOTW AS A PREQUEL WHICH SOLD HUGE
AC6 BASICALLY HAD THE ENTIRE BACKING OF THE DARK SOULS SERIES
WHAT DID SONIC FRONTIERS HAVE
NOTHING
FRONTIERS SOLD WELL ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, SO AS LONG AS THE SEQUEL IS GOOD IT'LL DO BETTER
THESE THINGS DON'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT
NO GAME SELLS IN A VACUUM
they really dont get it huh?
Nintendo and From have decades of good will at this point so people bought in to their new games. Sega, and in particular sonic team, have spent decades failing to get sonic working in 3D
Old bait thread aside, Sonic "devs" aka Kishitmoto should be asking "what does Dream Team and Mania/Superstars have that Frontiers doesn't"? Then they might get a clue and make a real Sonic game for once.
Nothing, they're all terrible.
What is it with TF2 and homosexuals?
Good gameplay and cohesive worldbuilding? Like, what the frick is Soni doing in default Unity world? Why are there Sonic ramps and loop de loops in that world? Why do they work against exploration?
>Zelda games
>Thousands of webms all over the place in non-Zelda threads
>Sonic games
>Only came across 2-3 since its release in non-Sonic threads
There's your problem, no one cares about Sonic
I still don't even know what the game looks like kek
It looks like a generic unity engine game
>what was the issue?
Devs that don't like Sonic games making Sonic games.
Do you want multiple ways to get to the goal or only one?
Nintendo and From know what makes their franchises great and are able to deliver a good game in those franchises. Sonic Team don't know how to make a good Sonic game
