This is the reasonable answer. However, I feel a perverse sort of loyalty towards the game I bought and not finishing it would be insulting to its existence so I force myself through it.

FF7 remake. Overall I like the gameplay well enough but the final chapter is so bad I can't even describe how bad it is. It enrages me that there are people in this world who think the story of ff7r is good in any way. The only good parts of the story are ripped directly from ff7 and every piece of original writing is some of the worst shit I've ever suffered through in video games.

I could stomach the earlier parts of OG writing although I weren’t too excited about them, but that final chapter, Jesus frick it was horrible. Like fever dream bad.

This so much, thank you anon for letting me know I'm not the only one. But definitely that and the ending to ME3.

The very end seemed so unnecessary too, they could have ended it without the random Sephiroth nonsense and it would have been significantly better, just give us a Jenova battle when he shows up, then Sephiroth can fricking bail, and the gang can escape, boss gauntlet vs Shinra machines, final scene on the plains outside Midgar
I couldn't even tell what the frick was happening in that whole sequence at the end

        Anonymous

I still wonder why they didn’t leave the first Jenovs encounter for the ending. Yeah, Motor Ball would have been too lame of an ending for a game, but they could have easily just added more buildup to Dreamweaver and made it the final boss. It’s not like the fight was *that* important to bind to the office where it happened now, I’d even argue that keeping the office scene as it was would have been better.

          Anonymous

Agreed, Jenova was surely an easy pick for an endgame boss seeing as she's a recurring fight, and she would have been far better than motor ball, the gang could have been pursued by Shinra on the motorway, and then shit could have got real with Sephiroth flying over, killing a bunch of mobs and then chasing us down like an angry magpie
It's not like they made bad decisions all throughout either, some of the stuff they added in was honestly pretty good, that ending was just bafflingly bad, I wonder if it was quite a late decision to include
I liked fighting the weird cloud, barrett, and tifa bosses, they could have been a great addition later in the series, maybe during clouds internal strife sick man emo time instead
Absolute crack pipe game dev moment

tbqtbh I was being hyperbolic in my first post. I actually did like a lot of the fleshed out characterization they did. Tifa is already a better character in ff7r than she was in ff7. It's baffling because the adapted and expanded ff7 worldbuilding is great but the compilation and OG stuff is fricking terrible. Did they delegate that shit to interns or outsource it or something? The craziest thing is that Nomura of all people has gone on record saying he was the tard wrangler on this project and the story would've been even worse without him.

You could feel the exact moment they ran out of money.

I felt like this in 2017 when I first played it, then I replayed it at the beginning of last year while fully knowing how shit the combat was and how rushed it got after a certain point in the game. And it was actually nice, even if only for the whole on an adventure with the bros feelings. The DLCs were bad-ok, except for Ignis' which was really nice and showed how much of a true friend he was and elevated the whole experience from a 5.5 to a 7 something.

I wouldn't shit on it that hard, but there are some games where you enter into a fugue state and just want to finish it out of a weird sense of obligation, even though you've not been enjoying it for ages. It's like continuing to watch a tv series that already jumped the shark because you were 4 seasons in already.

Elden Ring absolutely suffers from that. They could have cut a quarter of play time out of it and vastly improved the game.

not that anon but every game after the first one is just a stupid massive retcon to the previous title to the point the writers just gave up on making sense of the story they wrote and left it incomplete to this day.

        Anonymous

the plot is nonsense and the characters make the worst decisions possible, along with the new characters looking completely out of place next to the old ones
it's a shame to, because there are a couple scenes in the game with the old characters that are legitimately good
it's a real shame because where the first two games shined, the characters, descriptions, and audio were a complete step down and the game feels like a low budget afterthought with new writers
if you still want to get into the series i recommend corpse-party rebuilt, zero, the 2021 version, and maybe book of shadows if you want more of the less utilized characters from the 2021 version
just don't play the secret chapter of bos and any of the other sequels if you don't want a bad taste in your mouth afterwards

Because presentation is important. If I have to waste 4 hours of my time until the game gets good because incompetent developers can't make it enjoyable from the start then it's not worth it

yeah but what does that have to do with "the game started out pretty good, but then it got bad"? its impossible to drop a game in 1-2 hours for being a bad game, if its only a bad game later on.

I've seen zero discussion of this game on V thus far so I may be the only one to have played it, but this Kermit montage was my reaction to finishing Death's Gambit: Afterlife

Death's Gambit was a pretty damn good game, simple but with lots of interesting ideas and great visuals as well as music, the one thing which was absolutely stellar about the game was its tone. The tone above everything, it was very somber, melancholic, and it had lots of kino moments. Death's Gambit Afterlife is a "remake" of the original game, with a lot more mechanics, areas, bosses, just more content in general.

HOWEVER; Afterlife came out as a free update, replacing the original and adding a lot of content, and without exaggeration, it is A FRICKING SHITPOST, they turned a grim dark miserable story about a guy who is looking for his probably dead mother in a destroyed kingdom into a fricking joke, you have squirrel people in little kinght hats riding on frogs fighting you with sticks, and its not a one-of joke either, they are all over the game. There's so much silly goofy goober stuff, like a giant fat rabbit underground who you have to feed carrots to, it completely ruins the feel the original game had. Seriously, this "expansion" is like drawing a rage comic jackie chan on your grandmas grave with a sharpie, I have no fricking idea what the people making the game were thinking.

And of course, best of all, the original, the good version of the game is now only available if you frick around in the Steam settings, meaning that anyone who buys Death's Gambit (an otherwise pretty great game) will now be greeted with this redditor's wet dream of quirky chungus moments interlaced with the extremely mismatched grim and miserable story and setting of the game.

The former I wanted to rewind time, take back the hours I stuck into it and the cash I paid for it. Hated the writing so much and the retconning of established cultures and ideology from the first two.

The latter outright killed my desire to continue playing XIV, Heavensward was Peak, Shadowbringers excellent, and all the ambiguity Shadowbringers posited was utterly wasted for Muh Time frickery also everyone unquestioningly loves and agrees that Angel Dommy Mommy did nothing wrong at all ever.

I can accept writing is very subjective but if I go through what I perceive to be flagrant inconsistency for cheap bait and pandering, I cannot stand it. Also both titles made worse by the inability of either fandoms to accept that some people couldn't stand how the writers handled the plots and world.

        A what?

Look I was all for EW in the first act when we see the effects of the fall of Garlemald, right up to the part where that Garlean Commander tops himself was genuinely great, loved the tone and what I thought we were in for.

Going to Elpis? Okay I preferred leaving it mired in mystery and through the recollections of other characters, but once we brought up the Moon Bunnies, end of the World but Pajeet Elephants need us to carry crates, time frickery and characters that previously expressed heavy doubts about the roles of Hydaelyn and Zodiak suddenly falling into perfect party line?

Nah not for me, I felt it flew off the rails and suffered from an appalling lack of writing direction, like the team realised that ShB brought up too many points of contention for how they wanted fans to perceive certain events, so time travel and 'I HAD A CONVOLUTED PLAN ALL ALONG' would do as a quick plaster over.

HOWEVER, Zenos was a small light in the tunnel for me, coming in like he did at the end, shutting everyone up and kicking arse just to get his final duel was incredibly kino. Not enough to redeem what I felt was a big waste of time otherwise, but it was a good stab.

          >A what
Someone who is somehow committed to the idea that Venat was, at any point, a "bad guy". It's been a widely ridiculed and utterly moronic fan theory since ARR because it heavily relied on ESL-tier reading comprehension and outright ignoring half the plot. Venat was never going to be evil, and was never going to be a morally dubious character. They go to pretty big lengths to ram that down your throat in every expansion.
          >but once we brought up the Moon Bunnies
I guess that's just going to be jarring for people who never played FFIV so I'll leave that to subjective tastes. It was goofy, but I don't agree that it was a major issue, and the idea of lighthearted fun in a time where everything is going shit actually works really well with the overall narrative themes and thrust.
          >time frickery and characters that previously expressed heavy doubts about the roles of Hydaelyn and Zodiak suddenly falling into perfect party line?
Time frickery has been a major part of the story for a while now, but this wasn't even really time frickery, this was specifically about you learning the nature of the threat and nothing else, there is no "time frickery" so much as there is a 'walk through a dream' like sequence. You have to have completely misunderstood the story and how time travel works in the setting if you think there was any time frickery involved. And as for people having doubts about Hydaelyn that was an expression of their natural skepticism, they never once found or brought up legitimate issues other than "we shouldn't be so trusting of their good nature", so when they had been proven wrong they accepted that proof, what else did you want them to do? Be stubbornly moronic?

            >...They go to pretty big lengths to ram that down your throat in every expansion.

Ah, I felt a little differently with how events surrounding the Warriors of Darkness and the destruction of Amaurot were depicted, I love ambiguity and the notion that even the designated 'all loving' deity figures are capable of heinous acts for supposedly benevolent reasons. Granted that may be approaching it with a completely different expectation to the standard saccharine character traits employed in JRPGs, appreciate the explanation.

            >...actually works really well with the overall narrative themes and thrust.

Yeah I'm aware almost everything in XIV is full of easter eggs, nods and trivia for longtime fans, I'm not one of them. I grew up on different games with very different tones where RPGs were concerned, I suppose I viewed 'kitschy/cutesy' antics as ill-placed attempts at levity that bordered on the absurd. By my own admission I struggle to take some elements of the story seriously on aesthetics alone, I just cannot wrap my head around anything important being attributed to moon rabbits beyond light relief. But as you indicate that's on the player.

            >...what else did you want them to do? Be stubbornly moronic?

Oh no nothing so drastic, I think I could have been mollified if any of it had been taken to task or if there was an option to even press Venat on the matter itself. I'll admit the reactionary part of me had me ranting to a mate when I saw the cutscenes at the end 'how dare you try and save yourselves, my plan is better cause I have a guy 12,000 years away ready to sort it out according to my time script, take sundering to the face skreeee'

Once again it probably is a matter of taste and how I wanted to see the points of ShB addressed, I wasn't satisfied by a binary 'all this was done because Venat had it all in hand, there is no deviating from this viewpoint that she was absolutely correct.'

Moral ambiguity is fine, and even very common in FFXIV, but this becomes just mediocre when that's all you have. Having more saccharine, straightforward characters balances this out, and that's what Hydaelyn/Venat was doing from the start.
              >how dare you try and save yourselves, my plan is better
Yea that's a bit of a weird take since she knew for certain their plan was doomed. This wasn't a case of "lets wait and see how it works" even being an option. This was "we either blow ourselves up in an Alexander-style paradox blast or we continue the timeline". As Elidibus tells you at the very start of the arch; "You cannot change the past". This isn't a warning, it's a statement of fact. People tend to misunderstand due to Shadowbringers but that game did something that is basically impossible for the setting by splitting timelines, something nothing else had been capable of doing in the entire history of the universe.

This wasn't a moral story about Venat's choices (she never actually had any, that was the point here) it was a tragedy about her unfortunate fate.

I could probably provide a more eloquent and in-depth response as to what I personally found jarring about the tone. But I'm on a couple of strong beers and can feel myself slipping lol. I think it's just a matter of taste and acknowledging there are tonal and character decisions that I don't really care for.

                > "You cannot change the past"

See this I'll say did throw me off, I took that exactly as you say, an iron-cast statement of fact, with the explicitly clear warning that the party could not and should not attempt to interfere in Elpis. Five minutes later we do exactly that, hence the impression of 'Oh here we go it's fantasy Back to the Future' time.

I won't contend that Venat's story depicts her as being caught in a catch 22, I suppose it's what I perceive as a 'willing nodding dog' response from all the other characters that the sundering and abandonment of other worlds is beyond any question because Venat is correct.

It just leaves a foul taste for me, maybe the cutscene cut it a little short but either I missed a trick or I misinterpreted the desires of the Amaurotines to continue as they had done as 'misguided but not destructive' when faced with the end times.

I felt that Venat's actions when portrayed as 'ruthless but absolutely correct' do no credit to the perspectives of those she sunders or in later times abandons to their destruction. Certainly we are able to see why she does what she does, but I didn't come away satisfied that the context of those actions were given fair weight to account for the fact that no one else is privy to the knowledge she has! Which for some reason unless I can't remember she does not see fit to share or use to even reason with her peers? It came across as extremely callous and bullish to me in the end, hence why I found it distasteful.

Nah I think exhaustion is about the right response to finishing Elden Ring. It goes on for way too long after it runs out of content and it has the same souls issue of basically giving you your full combat potential at low level and never really giving you new moves or options so the combat never really changes or evolves. It just gets so tiring by the end.

pac man world 1 may have have hard as balls platforming at points but it never had so many fricking points of no return, actually obnoxious level design alongside having a fricking garbage 20 minute final level like world 2

Cam here to post this. I actually didn't hate the combat, but going through the temple for the eight time killed me inside. I don't think that the plot is anything special either. I've played games with way more dramatic and impactful writing. The music was cool at least, I liked Hansel and Gretel's song.

    Unironically TotK.
I wasn't even hyped for it. I was expecting some mildly improved BotW and it isnt even that. Its modded BotW. Many flaws are still there (Cooking various are worthless, Menu hell, weapons and armor range from useless to broken with little inbetween). Tech was kind of cool until you learn to make all of 3 things in auto build because everything else is TikTok clip bait or useless. Mechanically as wide as the ocean and as shallow as a puddle

Worse is the story. 0 expectations yet somehow made the game a narrative driven game but the story is asynchronous?! Major story beats can be stumbled on early, late, or flat missed. My only mistake was hoping that a sacrifice would mean anything and hold any weight. The entire story changes nothing in the world beyond "BTW you have unexplained tech floating around for fun.". Its like they didn't bother even writing in a reason most unexplained elements and just hoped the player nodded fast enough while skipping the same story explanation for the 4th time.

The game is an experiment that the game doesn't have to be well written or have depth but be fun enough within a 15 second clip on Instagram.

It was really fricking long and repetitive and it felt punishing for me as completionist stealth player. Not in the sense the stealth was hard (it was dull), but in the sense that I got so sick of endlessly hacking shit in endlessly long stealth challenge corridors.

    Doom Eternal
Having played both doom 1 and 2 and loving them I had also found myself liking doom 2016 (it's a good game but that one part with the tower just slows the game down for me). Doom eternal comes along and it just feels like a giant miss step that turns into a fall down a flight of stairs. It turns doom from a shooter that anybody can enjoy and have fun with into some stressful uber hardcore gamer game that has somewhat destroyed the doom community, filling with lardasses who remove the monicer of doom fan from anyone for not playing doom eternal on Ultra Nightmare without dying while blindfolded. Even though those same whinos never even touched an IWAD file in their life let alone the doom 1 or doom 2 wad.
