It's pretty amazing that they could make something this complicated even possible to reason out. Hardest part was just finding the fricking button to input the answer, FRICK point and click.
On one hand, I was impressed with the puzzle for bringing together all of the shit you need to learn about Riven (numbers, the domes, the colors the layouts of the isles)
But on the other hand, I have no fricking idea how magic marbles power a reactor, and figuring out the colors was bullshit. Everything else was okay.
I haven't even tried it.
Bought it when it was around 2 months old release
I haven't ever installed it. I have also bought it from Steam
is it actually good?
>the marble and animal puzzles require you to not only understand the game world but overall design of the game itself
absolutely unreal, I ended up with so many handwritten notes on everything in the game and even those moments don't compare to the moment I realized that D'ni numbers are base 25
I figured out the numbers up to 10 from the school game, but I couldn't figure out the base 25 aspect.
I also got filtered by pic related and the doors to get to Gehn's office
I could never get into the Myst franchise. The puzzles are too unexplained and disconnected from any logic for me. I know I'm just moronic, though, and I feel like I'm missing out.
you have to immerse yourself. 1 and riven are just walking around enjoying the world and finding clues that you doodle on some paper. if you want actual puzzles that frick with you play 3 and especially 4.
I honestly tried that. It's just >wander around >look at puzzle >press some random buttons >nothing seems to happen >try to look for some environmental clue >look up answer online >realize this is going to ruin the game >exit
I do like puzzle games, though. Obra Din is one of my favorite games. Myst just lacks what I expect to be there.
You got filtered by myst of all fricking things, that's just fricking embarrassing dude.

Okay, and what's the "correct" way to do it?
What did you expect? Not-puzzles?
Environmental clues. Not answers, just some explanation as to what the frick the thought process is. "Try random buttons until something happens" isn't really much of a puzzle.

What do you mean correct way to do it children have managed to finish myst without looking up shit on gamefaqs.

Figuring out the thought process is the "puzzle" though? Like if you have the method to solve a particular problem, then you're already done. I don't think there's any point in Mys where you're just trying random shit hoping something happens.
if you're pressing random buttons you're wasting your time. 1 and riven are like playing a chain reaction. you find hint to puzzle tthat unlocks other thing to show you a hint to solve another puzzle that goes to another age. you're not supposed to sit there and mash buttons on puzzles and hope you get it right.
nta but i got myst 4 as a teen and i was never able to get past the starting area, there was some kind of dam you had to start i think and a bedroom that had nothing in it. confusing shit
You can maybe make that argument about Myst. Riven on the other hand, definitely not. Riven's puzzles are thoroughly intertwined with the setting and the internal logic of the world.
Got into the series as a child because my parents played it together and beat them all. I brute forced way more than I should have through some autism. Always got stuck at some point though. Amazing sound tracks though.
>base 25 number system >five islands of Riven >Riven is the fifth age >Riven is spelled with five letters >the V in riven is the roman numeral for five and is emphasized on the cover >Gehn's emblem has five leaves, five pen tips, and five books >game comes on five discs >the animal puzzle is solved by finding the correct order of five animal symbols >the marble puzzle requires five out of six marbles to be placed correctly on a 25x25 grid >even the soundtrack is composed entirely in a key that's five numbers from the top and five numbers from the bottom of the scale
I was never able to beat it as a kid. If I remember, I could never figure out the numbers system. I was able to figure out the first 10 or so numbers but after that I got too confused with it and gave up. There was also that spinning dome puzzle in the area with the geothermal water? you had to stop it spinning and I couldn't figure out how
Is there a "realriven" version like there is for realMyst?
No, but there's an upcoming Riven remake.
Who knows when that'll come out. But the idea of being able to walk around the islands on VR is very appealing.
Very nice. MystVR was really good.
i love how much of an autism project that is, that was a community project at first right?
It seems like it started out as a fan remake and then the guys doing it got hired out by Cyan.
makes sense. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eak2UhYrZMs
this kinda stuff i chuckle at, very impressive but holy shit the autism levels
only one of them was taken on and about all cyan is doing is using all the camera matching they did as reference.
Why did they do it?
It's one of those 1990s "oops we lost the source code and og assets" thing.
>has an entire island that spells out the solution for you
>people still miraculsouly frick it up
It's pretty amazing that they could make something this complicated even possible to reason out. Hardest part was just finding the fricking button to input the answer, FRICK point and click.
>something this complicated
going to plateau island isn't complicated, using that 3d grid machine was really cool.

I played it a year or so ago. Yeah it's as good as everyone says it is. Although I still hate point and click.
I might then try it some day
i'm an idiot for watching a streamer play this, but then again i'm probably not big brained enough to have figured the puzzles out
>i'm an idiot for watching a streamer
yes
i honestly get about the same enjoyment out of a game watching it/playing it, only a waste when it's about thinking
oh you must enjoy sony games
how so? i enjoy kojima games
same thing

Everything
It even looks better than modern games

Myst is literally the first puzzle game what did you expect idiot
I'm not criticizing it. It is what it is.

Will we ever see anything like Uru again?

cyan-sama...
