That's was the case last gen too. The first party games are seen as advertising so Sony is ok with it. 3rd party sales has always made Sony more money than first party.

Microsoft is relatively on track. Their model is a live service model providing games in mobile, pc, and the living room.

They did frick up the Halo IP to an embarrassing degree, and they let developers be lazy onion boys. I hope they use Activision brass to get their betas in line.

    >decide to port its exclusives to Windows PC
    >console sales fall off for some reason

      Anonymous

They're recovering but the reality is that they need some big system-sellers to move the needle more than it already has.
The reality is that even if this generation had no exclusives at all for either Xbox or Playstation, most people already have most of their friends and library for playstation so there's momentum on that side already.
Xbox has to over-compensate to get people into their ecosystem. Game Pass is a good way to simulate players having a big library already but you need to win them over with something distinct that your competitor can't ever have

To add onto what I previously posted, with the digitalization of games, or games offered as services through these companies the console market shares are with a high level of certainty (asspull) not going to swing dramatically for Sony or Xbox. The gamers are set up, they've got their "digital collection" they're firmly rooted in their ecosystems.

        Agreed.
I think that's sort of why Xbox is going for all this cloud and PC stuff so much, along with Game Pass as a whole.
Game Pass is passive income that doesn't ask players to re-buy their whole library but still has a strong value proposition for people who maybe want a glorified demo program.
Cloud is nice, in some capacity, as something you use if you're out of the house or away from your console itself. Especially in bigger cities as Fiber becomes more popular, you may see it take hold amongst people who don't want to buy a whole new box + TV for their apartment.
Speaking purely for myself, I use Geforce Now a fair bit when I play Total War or Anno games on my laptop since my connection allows it.
I think xCloud could benefit from opening up some options for larger bandwidth on the client-end and higher resolution/framerate. It's fricking stuck at 720p rn

I don't really agree, subscription services like gamepass or playstation plus make it easier than ever for consumers to just switch between consoles whenever they feel like because they don't actually own anything, there is less investment

          Anonymous

Many people have been avoiding game subscription services specifically because it sounds like a scam. The digital edition consoles have been selling bad because people think they'll need to depend on a subscription service to play their games.

Perhaps I should have specified I believe this holds true in the current gen only.

If the next generation of consoles can compete on new features that does create an avenue for one or the other product to stand out and yes I suppose a paradigm shift based on a launch feature is plausible, it would have to be a fricking killer feature though.

Forgot what event it was but I'm fairly sure some MSoft execs were talking about how they're not going to focus, or maybe it was make a great push for, the console sales space anymore. Instead, they were going to focus on the MSoft Games Ecosystem (badly paraphrasing from memory here)

I think they (MS) are going to just make more games available to their platform, make their platform more easily accessible with attractive pricing to draw customers in.

Anyway they've got much smarter people hopefully working on their market share and whatever those 2 representatives said was merely a brief outline of their immediate plan.

        Anonymous

Oh they've said that in plenty of events, so it could be from anywhere.
I think the idea is that Microsoft will put their games on many devices but not their direct competitors (Nintendo, Playstation) for most things (sans Minecraft, CoD) unless it's through game pass.
The broader goal, as some people have pointed out, is to make it so easy to play their games on Cloud, PC and Console that they get your save-files and friend group invested on their system to the point that you're sort of locked in, at least partially.
        >hopefully working on their market share and whatever those 2 representatives said was merely a brief outline of their immediate plan.
Well they wouldn't be making Starfield exclusive if they just wanted to go full third party. Here's hoping it's good so that they give Sony some proper competition on the console front.
I'm actually somewhat hopeful for the Fable and South of Midnight games too. They could go a long way to helping Xbox forge a new identity for themselves that brings people in

I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't just leave the console hardware industry like Sega if most execs don't want to take part in it anymore. They've been openly telling people that they want to move on from the Xbox brand since 2010 but at the same time are buying game studios and making new consoles.

          Anonymous

          >I don't understand why Microsoft doesn't just leave the console hardware industry like Sega if most execs don't want to take part in it anymore
Well remember, we do have proof that they can do quite well when things are going properly. Xbox 360 beat the PS3 in most metrics save for hardware unit sales but even then, most of the PS3's sales came later after price-cuts.
They almost did drop out of the console marked after the Xbox One but Phil convinced them to give it one more shot and I have a feeling it'll probably work well for them
          >They've been openly telling people that they want to move on from the Xbox brand since 2010
Well a big part of that is probably Mattrick wanting to be part of Microsoft instead of being quartered off in their games division.
But moreover, I think they do want to stay in the games space but the issue is that they don't make enough games to justify becoming third party. Their main goal is to make money off of Xbox and going third party would probably cost them more profit than it would gain them

Embrace, Extend, Extinguish failed or at least got delayed significantly when they flubbed the Xbone and the Extinguish phase in general. Now there's just a bunch of leftover Microsoft cancer shitting up the pool from the Extend phase.

They bought plenty of devs, but there isnt a MS type of game, so you end up with a bunch of exclusive multiplats, if you know what I mean.
A nintendo exclusive made by a third party(read: everything but pikmin/mario/zelda) still feels like a Nintendo game.

Nintendo didn't dissolve and lose all their major developers and partners, neither did Sony. Microsoft was exceptionally unlucky that Don Mattrick basically not only torched their reputation but actively destroyed or drove away all their internal talent.
        Lionshead? Dead
        Bungie? Estranged
Epic and Cliffy B? Gone to bigger and better things
When Nintendo was in the shitter, Iwata was sharp enough to know that the only way they'd bounce back was if the development studios were kept at full strength.
Sony lost in the 7th gen but not by that much. Their frick-ups have never been as bad as Microsoft's, even with the PS3's $600 pricetag and moronic PSUs. People still had a lot of attachment to them that let them survive and even thrive during the PS3-era.
Mattrick's frick-up is on a whole other level. Imagine if, while the Wii U was dying, Iwata had fired or laid off hundreds of developers and basically dissolved 90% of the EPD divisions. Do you think the Switch would have been able to get big without anyone around to actually make the games? Do you think they'd have been able to build back that trust with employees, let alone external developers?

Have them cater to audiences that aren't just chuds and dudebros, and maybe they'll actually see some profit?

They're sitting on a ton of family friend IP and they refuse to invest in them. It's as backwards as Sony shutting down their Japanese studios.

Both of them are literally giving the biggest video game market to Nintendo, because their audiences have convinced them these genres don't matter. When in reality, Nintendo is profiting majorly from them.

    >But it's Nintendo

It's because they actually put a budget behind these titles. You're not seeing Sony or Microsoft release an Ape Escape or Banjo Kazooie at all.

Microsoft literally has no idea who its target audience is and it really shows
I have no idea who's in charge of their sales and marketing, but they're either so limp wristed that they just let the studios do whatever they want, or they're painfully incompetent and don't know how to appeal to anyone so they just try to appeal to everyone

      Anonymous

It's not that they have no idea but that Playstation took their target audience last generation
So now they have to find some group who isn't spoken for or is on the fence about where they play games.
Xbox 360 used to be the place for the Madden/CoD Dudebros but then Playstation took them with the PS4 era. So it's not that Xbox doesn't know who their audience is but they have to find a new one that neither Nintendo nor Playstation have put a stake on

With the amount of IP they now own they should be selling 100+ million consoles per generation coming up. If they can't do this they are an absolute failure of a company.
