Darkest Dungeon went huge, but its sequel came and went in with a whisper. Giving death blows to enemies was bullshit sure; but did it deserve this?

They didn't adapt the game into Lustful Lair. That's what players wanted.

They forgot my town building kino. Games like DD and XCOM appeal to autsits like me who like shallow base building in between missions for that sense of progress.

DD1 was a fluke, cracks in Red Hook's game design were starting to show already in it's expansions.

All the DD1 expansions are dogshit, it overstays the premise and tolerance you could have with the game, the darkest dungeon is more than enough as a final challenge

Something about always having to be in the cart just made the game seem so much smaller than 1, genuinely felt like i was just doing the same thing over and over again after just a handful of runs

    >cool characters like auntie and crusader excluded, flagman made into a blight character instead of burn
    >made the characters less able to be imprinted on (i.e. there aren't many men-at-arms, there is just one and he has this exact history)
    I was never interested

harsh launch that was changing systems late in dev0
the grinding, the game will tell you not to give up and try again but then will throw shit like memories and traits at you and if you lose someone? well restart that Grand Slam attempt and go back to chapter 1 to progress since you want those memories buffs. So if you want to get everyone forget about coming up with comps, you pick your core 3 and 1 newbie that gets bussed through all of them
individual runs are too long, and that's not going over the cinematics on each reset that you can't skip without speeding up with cheatengine
crusader wasn't at launch and was only brought back due to people not shutting up about him

      >crusader wasn't at launch
they funny part is they also had to balance his release with a nigress fencer to keep the ESG shit or whatever the frick in balance

I enjoyed it alot, the story telling in particular was head and shoulders above DD1. What I did not like (and what affected its longevity the most for me) was that most of the specs were literal useless garbage, to the point where you just wouldn't use them except to frick around, entire characters were either one note or even useless, and for these reasons replaying the game just isn't very fun.

Also having healers (Occultist and Vestal) only be able to heal when health was insanely low is stupid, especially when your first healer unlocked is able to do it at 50%.

    >hero deaths don't matter
    >hero deaths end runs
They managed to design a game where both of these are true, in an a complete inverse of DD1. In DD1 you care if Dismas dies because he's gone forever (and you're locked out of the achievement), but you likely have more HWM and your campaign isn't over. In DD2 you don't care because you get 1 HWM which is Dismas, he's right back next run, probably coming soon since you lost a hero.
    >stuck using the same 4 heroes for 1-2 hours per run
    >candle and memory system encourages you to never switch off them for subsequent runs or else you dilute skill unlocks/investments
Again, DD1 lets you switch your party around all the time for missions that last anywhere from 5-30 minutes each depending on what YOU picked, and the game incentivizes it with the stress system and town events.
    >can't store trinkets to play with
    >can't easily lock quirks to play with, heavily restricted to 1 quirk for 1 hero
    >no mod support
The game has 0 replay value and it's not even very fun or challenging to get through on the 1st time around anyway, which shouldn't take too long once you have enough inn items to make the relationship system free. Redhook have squandered everything.

DD1 is the better overall game however and for the sake of positivity i want to list the stuff that DD2 does great

First and most important is the combat, the combat is way better than it was in 1, its clearer its meatier and has a lot more opportunities to strategize
Second before we leave combat is the "combo" tokens replacing the mark mechanic, this is a huge improvement
Third the art is gorgeous it is as charming as it the one in DD was (but in a different manner) while also having translated beautifully into 3d
Fourth the paths for each character are different enough, i think that 3 paths (+ wanderer) is a bit too much and probably 2 paths would have been enough and also allow the devs to make them "clearer" but i appreciate the effort put on those. It really gives the game more choices
Fifth they have adapted the characters pretty well to the new system, they feel like their old selves but with new tricks, an exception to this is the crusader which is right now a mess that needs a bit of work
Sixth the 2 original new characters are very well done
Seventh the memory shrines are a decent idea to explore the background of the characters, some of the scenarios are fantastic however there are also a couple that stink
Eighth the last boss puts any fight in DD1 to shame, its a fantastic capstone to the game, its grandiose and is fun and combines a few of the gimmicks you have seen in other bosses 10/10

Again i 100% believe DD1 is a better game and i have the hours wasted on it to prove it; is the one game i would love to forget and replay from scratch but DD2 is way better than i expected it to be when it released and has gotten better with the patches.
    Keep on circle jerking

      >Sixth the 2 original new characters are very well done
Arsonist is really one note and most of their skills/builds dont do anything, most runs I only use the single target fire bomb and ... smokescreen I think it was, everything else is absurdly niche or useless. In addition her design is a bit shit. Its OK but compared to the other characters they just seem really bland and normal.

      Dont know about the duelist.

    >DD1 = dogshit gameplay but extremely good art and atmosphere
    >DD2 = ruin the art and the atmosphere
    Great job, devs.
