It is stronger than Ender-Dragon and Wither COMBINED. Two endgame bosses that give you among the best rewards in the entire game. It can literally two or one shot you even at the strongest armor level with max enchanting. Wanna know what he drops?

It is meant to protect valuable loot, but the fricking thing only protects items that are near obsolete around mid-game level and rarely if ever useful aside from enchanting. What the frick are they doing? What incentive does it make for me to ever visit the ancient cities under these conditions?

amazing that I cleared 4 of those cities without issue, but then going back for the armor trims I encountered issues. Really not sure how it even spawned there and whatnot, wasn't close in the least to one of those cities. Oh well, just rebuilt everything eventually but was a bit annoying losing everything.
The real answer for this is that the ancient cities are probably harbouring another reward that will be added in a future update; that being another dimension.
There is a giant frickoff portal in the middle of ancient cities comprised of unique blocks that don't exist elsewhere, and the miniature status of it are designated as "portal".
Mojang's M.O. at the moment is to add functionally useless things to begin with, and add stuff to increase their use over time. It's why we're getting so many items that are only really useful for one thing at the moment.
I don't believe this is a problem in and of itself, however it could take any time from the next big update to the heat death of the universe to have that feature added.
The speed of development is a result of having a huge number of platforms to port to and consider for design (the bundle still isn't added due to mobile platform interfaces). In addition to this, they need to think about every little faction of the player base for even small changes, and in their effort to make everyone happy, everyone is displeased with the lack of content added to each update.
What they really need to do is get someone with a fixed vision and feel for the game, with an ideal of what the game should be like, and get them and the dev team to take the game closer to that.
It would be like ripping a bandaid off, and some people would be unhappy, but in the end it would probably have the effect that repentance had compared to Afterbirth+ for the Binding of Isaac.

Prioritizing adventure gameplay over sandbox gameplay. The former are less replayable generally and have more focus on quests, dungeons and other shit like that, which all run out or become repetitive. That's why they're usually for RPG's or narrative games. The latter is focused on strong gameplay loops with room for creativity. Minecraft was never hard, but you were constrained by the environment. Going back to play beta is very revealing.
