When it became all about reading donation messages. Having the host constantly asking "is it okay to read donations now" is insufferable. I haven't watched the main event in a couple years now and only really watch several of the hotfix shows.

Speedrunning is generally related to mental illness, but there are some genuinely cool people ive met that have pretty normal lives. GDQ got too big too fast and on top of that as more and more controversies and mishaps occurred it paved the way for what we have now.
case in point I believe Stivitybobo's incident is what forced mike uyama (the original owner) to sellout to corporations and let then run it as they see fit. Seeing as how most big companies just care about being politically correct and not actually care about what the event was originally about its no wonder troons ran it into the ground and are continuing to do so. iirc stiv is doing well and im not sure he speedruns anymore
When are they going to realize that the novelty and interest for Speedrunning died years ago? Not just from the viewers but people running as well.
Nearly every single "run" in any event nowadays is either an obscure game that only that 1 guy is running so he can come to the events or someone at position 124 of the leaderboard for a game.
It's clear that not even the people attending AND running care much about speedrunning anymore, so that asks the question why not just transition(heh) the event to a general gaming event instead?
Could still have lots of speedrunning stuff AND other cool stuff like score attack, tournaments, arcade cabinets high score competition, having morony streams during the night, showcases and much more.

I remember some years ago GDQ partnered with some pinball channel and they had a bunch of tables in the lobby and a separate stream of people playing pinball. I ended up just watching that for almost the whole event instead.

This is the correct answer. As soon as "Speedrunning" became more about the people / personalities over the actual runs or techniques / knowledge used it was all over.
t.anon Who holds the world record for God Hand segmented speed run which was denied hosting on SDA because I was "not a known entity in the scene" (aka, I don't stream, I don't shit up social media with my garbage, etc). I provided all of the required proofs that the run was legitimate (setup used, etc). The one and only thing that came of it was the current "known" runner had a single statement: "That thing you did on Devil Hand second fight that you figured out that no one else knew? Totally stealing that."
Like a lot of things it became too corporate and sanded down. Remember it started off as a bunch of enthusiastic hardcore nerds in someone's room, it felt genuine and down to earth

The appeal is watching them being played extremely well (as in, almost impossible shit being pulled off) and/or the commentary as well as learning shit about how the games work.
