Provide a source on that at least, because the actual story is that the team bounced around ideas, Konami SUGGESTED a rail shooter because they were popular among Japanese players (which was considered since SH had lost touch with its JP fans after 2's release), the team invested time into that because they were mostly directionless, and then decided to switch gears several months in.
It wasn't Konami coming down and going "You must do this!" Konami was infamously hands off with Silent Hill most of the time. SH1 staff were mostly allowed to do what they wanted, they even allowed insane ploys like Sato working overnight on the FMVs to keep a solo credit. SH2 was a game essentially helmed by the CG artist, and 4 was allowed to pivot as much as it wanted to.
Go past that point, and you get development horror stories like Origins, where most of the issues came expressly from Konami not clamping down on Climax US, which led to them not knowing how dire the situation there was until it was much too late. Later on a full remake of SH1 would turn into Shattered Memories.
People want to create this idea that everything they don't like about the older SH is Konami's fault, when in reality Konami had very little true influence on any of the first four games.
The team themselves have said Konami gave them an ultimatum after SH2 "bombed" (sold 1mil compared to SH1's 2mil): they either develop and have both a SH3 and SH4 ready so they could release another game the following year or Silent Hill was over.
I also want to remind people that Team Silent had even began conceptualizing a SH5 for PS3, all we really know is that the theme was to have Silent Hill visualized with sunny weather, before Konami canned it.

I think you are vastly overestimating how popular the series is there. SH is truly one of the rare cases where the western market makes up practically all sales for the game, SH is genuinely a niche series there.
Silent Hill 3 isn't bad but you can tell that some things about the game feel off like getting a sub-machine gun in a regular playthrough and the story not being as good as 1 and 2.

yes, mostly because a big portion of SH fans are absolutely moronic. This hits harder with SH3 because SH3 leans harder into the witchcraft lore which is absolute nonsense. SH games are never about supernatural things. They are always psychological horror about traumata. I think they are inspired by the jacobs ladder movie.
In anyway, in SH3 they bend the knee to the sales team putting all that super natural shit very thickly on, so the moronic part of the silent hill fans feels approved and sells really well because most people are braindead and need witchcraft horror instead of psychological horror because they got no brain and can't think.
It could be a great game, but it is undoubtly heavily tainted.
SH1 was a mess where the team had no clue how to translate their idea of psychological horror so anybody on the planet would understand it.
SH2 was perfect. No too convuluted to not understand it, but also fear inducing without going completely overboard.
SH3 is whack. The psychological themes are awesome but everything else is complete whack. The pacing feels off and many visuals look like they were made for screenshots instead of a good atmospheric game.

SH3 is pretty shit. Asset reuse out the ass even though it doesn't fit, if anything Heather should've been revisiting SH1 locations not SH2's. Combat is better than 2, though that's a low-bar, and the game looks fantastic but there's no actual story, plot, or atmosphere to hook you until you get back to Heather's apartment halfway through the game and holy shit from the start up to that point is such a lousy grind. The mall is just mediocre, kinda inoffensive, but the subway is just a total bore. Nothing happens, just boring repetitive rooms to run through, what an awful dungeon.
That may just make the game sound average and not garbage but it's coming off the heels of SH1, the greatest horror game of its generation, and SH2 which was only slightly less good. SH3 does not compare.

I'll play devil's advocate here and say that while I think Ito is pretty ridiculous I can understand him to a degree. He made Pyramid Head with the intention that the character had serious meaning to a major work of his, seeing the character reduced to a mascot for shitty merch is infuriating as a creator. Honestly that's not a bad point at all. There are other mosters such as the nurses that appear on several games and take the same concept as a base, so it wouldn't be impossible for the symbol for punishment in SH being mostly represented by the red-hooded executioners.

Something that really separates SH1 from any later entry is how it was actually designed with the idea that the player would need to replay it to understand it. SH2 definitely has stuff you would only notice playing again but the actual narrative is clear enough for someone to understand only playing it once, by SH3 it feels like they tried to veer away from this design since it was less realistic to expect people to play the game again and would just upset more people. SH1 telling you you got the "bad" ending in your results screen was meant to bother you since you know now you fricked up.

It was such a unique idea back in the day to have this "home base" of yours slowly become encroached on by evil. If I remember correctly, Fatal Frame 3 did something very similar.
It gave some much needed relief to the tension of going through the spooky game, and became a source of tension in its own right as the game ratcheted up the stakes. It was really really well done.

They ended pitching a variety of things and ultimately wasting both time and money on concepts that went nowhere completely on their own with no interference from Konami. The direction of the story was also not chosen by Konami- it was chosen by key staff out of "Respect for the fans" or some nonsense.

Provide a source on that at least, because the actual story is that the team bounced around ideas, Konami SUGGESTED a rail shooter because they were popular among Japanese players (which was considered since SH had lost touch with its JP fans after 2's release), the team invested time into that because they were mostly directionless, and then decided to switch gears several months in.
It wasn't Konami coming down and going "You must do this!" Konami was infamously hands off with Silent Hill most of the time. SH1 staff were mostly allowed to do what they wanted, they even allowed insane ploys like Sato working overnight on the FMVs to keep a solo credit. SH2 was a game essentially helmed by the CG artist, and 4 was allowed to pivot as much as it wanted to.
Go past that point, and you get development horror stories like Origins, where most of the issues came expressly from Konami not clamping down on Climax US, which led to them not knowing how dire the situation there was until it was much too late. Later on a full remake of SH1 would turn into Shattered Memories.
People want to create this idea that everything they don't like about the older SH is Konami's fault, when in reality Konami had very little true influence on any of the first four games.
The team themselves have said Konami gave them an ultimatum after SH2 "bombed" (sold 1mil compared to SH1's 2mil): they either develop and have both a SH3 and SH4 ready so they could release another game the following year or Silent Hill was over.
I also want to remind people that Team Silent had even began conceptualizing a SH5 for PS3, all we really know is that the theme was to have Silent Hill visualized with sunny weather, before Konami canned it.

yes, mostly because a big portion of SH fans are absolutely moronic. This hits harder with SH3 because SH3 leans harder into the witchcraft lore which is absolute nonsense. SH games are never about supernatural things. They are always psychological horror about traumata. I think they are inspired by the jacobs ladder movie.
In anyway, in SH3 they bend the knee to the sales team putting all that super natural shit very thickly on, so the moronic part of the silent hill fans feels approved and sells really well because most people are braindead and need witchcraft horror instead of psychological horror because they got no brain and can't think.
It could be a great game, but it is undoubtly heavily tainted.
SH1 was a mess where the team had no clue how to translate their idea of psychological horror so anybody on the planet would understand it.

SH3 is pretty shit. Asset reuse out the ass even though it doesn't fit, if anything Heather should've been revisiting SH1 locations not SH2's. Combat is better than 2, though that's a low-bar, and the game looks fantastic but there's no actual story, plot, or atmosphere to hook you until you get back to Heather's apartment halfway through the game and holy shit from the start up to that point is such a lousy grind. The mall is just mediocre, kinda inoffensive, but the subway is just a total bore. Nothing happens, just boring repetitive rooms to run through, what an awful dungeon.
That may just make the game sound average and not garbage but it's coming off the heels of SH1, the greatest horror game of its generation, and SH2 which was only slightly less good. SH3 does not compare.

I'll play devil's advocate here and say that while I think Ito is pretty ridiculous I can understand him to a degree. He made Pyramid Head with the intention that the character had serious meaning to a major work of his, seeing the character reduced to a mascot for shitty merch is infuriating as a creator. I think he takes crossover shit way too seriously, no one is suddenly going to think worse of SH2 because PH appeared on a Japan only pachinko machine slot game as if this really happened in canon, but seeing something you made stripped of any identity and dignity like that naturally feels shitty.
I can totally understand if Ito is seeing PH's constant re-use as a bastardization or commoditization of a serious work of art, that shit happens all the time. I'd counter that:

Honestly that's not a bad point at all. There are other mosters such as the nurses that appear on several games and take the same concept as a base, so it wouldn't be impossible for the symbol for punishment in SH being mostly represented by the red-hooded executioners.

Something that really separates SH1 from any later entry is how it was actually designed with the idea that the player would need to replay it to understand it. SH2 definitely has stuff you would only notice playing again but the actual narrative is clear enough for someone to understand only playing it once, by SH3 it feels like they tried to veer away from this design since it was less realistic to expect people to play the game again and would just upset more people. SH1 telling you you got the "bad" ending in your results screen was meant to bother you since you know now you fricked up.

what i didn't like is how they throw 6 types of enemies before you leave the mall, it's like they're forcing the scares. it stops being an issue afterwards though

The look wasn't really intentional, Ito has said before that the "Fukuro Lady" model was an asset originally made for SH2 to act as a base when modeling the female characters of that game. as a way to save time they just took the model and used it as is.

Nothing. Graphically it looked great as a PS2 game (and still looks good) and has one of Yamaoka's best soundtracks. The PS2 version even came with the OST.

I dunno about scariest but the whole aspect of Henry's apartment being slowly taken over by spooks was fricking awesome. It was such a unique idea back in the day to have this "home base" of yours slowly become encroached on by evil. If I remember correctly, Fatal Frame 3 did something very similar.
It gave some much needed relief to the tension of going through the spooky game, and became a source of tension in its own right as the game ratcheted up the stakes. It was really really well done.
But yes, the backtracking sucked shit, and the ghosts constantly chasing you through the levels until you put a mcguffin through their chest sucked shit.

Have you noticed that SH3 doesn't have any optional sidequests? SH1 has the Kauffman sidequest and SH2 has the small campaign with Maria (Born from a Wish). SH3 has nothing.
