Reminded me of the goofy romantic subplot in SS2 with the frumpy catlady and the spicy spanish gigolo. Except that one was somewhat amusing and didn't feel like terrible forced pandering.

      >sabotaged it with lesbians
i don't think the game suffered that much from diversity. it felt well done like they actually gave a frick. the most unbelievable thing is a couple too many women in leadership positions. i've played it inside and out 8 times and there's a few minor details you could potentially argue that push 'the message' but it's fairly weak, especially since it's not very narrative focused.

Dull midgame, dull late game, tedious platforming sections, badly designed weapon wheel, unsatisfying weapons, low enemy variety, uninspired pursuer enemy, a lot of useless powers, mana scarcity means you can't frick around with fun powers like shapeshifting

      What lesbians

      >Dull midgame
midgame is the best part, overcoming obstacles and scavenging resources to upgrade yourself and/or weapons while still being vulnerable
      >dull late game
true. i spend the whole midgame risking my neck and pumping adrenaline to power myself up only to make the late game feel like a joke
      >tedious platforming sections
      what? optional?
      >unsatisfying weapons
q beam is horse shit. shotgun feels good if a bit standard, fully upgraded pistol becomes an uzi. gloo gun is almost too good of a tool, stun gun is alright
      >low enemy variety
fine when you view them as an obstacle. less cool when you lean into the combat. luckily the game is pretty short
      >uninspired pursuer enemy
      yea
      >useless powers
you can get creative, but there's not really a reason to not just use the combat powers. this is one of the biggest flaws and stems from the game being kinda small
      >mana scarcity
      homie what?
      >What lesbians
the two asians in the crew quarters area. you're basically forced to hear their story thru audio logs to get voice samples unless you know what you're doing and kill the cook right away. i think it's funny they made one of them a bpd c**t whose actions basically leads to her partner getting murdered.

I think part of why Dishonored is probably Arkane's strongest IP (and their last chance to survive) is because it's as fun to play the game as an unseen shadow who may or may not use their powers to get everywhere without being noticed than as "Aliens: Whitechapel edition" and just tear through everyone in the most ruthless way possible.

Cheesing encounters on max difficulty in the early game was the best part of Prey though. When all you have is a wrench of barely enough ammos for the glue gun so you just stalk the one phantom you can get to and bumrush it when the time is right. Afterward, the feeling is sadly lost since you got more than enough tools for any encounter.

The mimics just aren't enough to hang the whole game on, and the other enemy types suck. Low enemy variety also makes the mimics worse- there is never a point in the game where you kinda forget about mimics and can then be taken by surprise. The other enemies don't have interesting gimmicks, so the lack of variety feels even worse. The twist is ultimately more damaging than good.
The inner station should've felt more horrific and unknowable.
The Nightmare or whatever it's called completely misses the point- you look at Prey with its faceless, no-character enemies, you decide it could do with some singular special one as a sort of figurehead enemy figure, the tangible nemesis to maintain interest in the way a horde of mooks can't. Makes perfect sense- except the one we get is just faceless big mook. Boring design, boring to fight, largely a chore more than anything else, no narrative weight to it, feels like an afterthought. The lore behind it has some potential to be interesting, but it's not enough on its own, especially when it doesn't change to reflect you in any way.

      Anonymous

Nightmare’s design is genuinely great, it’s so well animated but it’s also completely pointless since it’s trivial to evade early and trivial to kill later.

It should’ve been an adaptive monster that comes back stronger, but that would require way more work.

  34. 5 months ago
    Anonymous

I didn't like doing chores for other people, there was maybe 5 cool moments in the entire game that they wear out like a prostitute but the whole game is just you being led around on a wild goose chase without any rewards or release for it. inb4 you call those paltry items they leave for you "rewards" instead of a satisfying narrative payoff like having a one-on-one talk with your supposed lover or getting the opportunity to rip your brother's face off for juking you 4+ times throughout the whole game
Also the enemy types are so fricking boring to play against, not to mention the broken as frick slowmo skill that they thought would somehow counter-balance the entire Typhon ability tree

The title was a double repellent. Fans of OG Prey were angry at being deprived of the long-promised sequel, and people who disliked it were not going to be enticed by the name of something they dislike.

The rumored title "Neuroshock" would have been much more fitting, as something in the vein of System Shock. (Colantonio denied that it was ever actually considered, but confirmed that the title was forced by Bethesda: https://old.reddit.com/r/prey/comments/w2tuh5/neuroshock/ )

This. Took my time and still beat it in 25 hours and have no interest in ever playing again.

        That's a very rushed playthrough.

after the first couple playthroughs you can 100% the station in like 15 hours.
i basically know where everything is at by now. can't believe i was still finding ways to get into certain places before expected. doing the whole of the neuromod division early game is wild.

          >big buildup about the military coming to raid the station
          >it's just more fricking radiator drones but now with guns
My disappointment was immeasurable. I was expecting like half life HECU tier grunts to fight.

          biggest disappointment

I legitimately dont understand the "low enemy variety" argument. No one ever makes this argument for anything, even games with less variety than Prey. Is this a meme from a review or something, where the frick does this argument even come from.

all the black blobs just kind of blend together, especially when you just pop adrenaline and shotgun them to death

Look at the enemies in the game.
Mimic (fodder if you're not taken by surprise, and you always know to expect them because they're the main enemy type, greater variety would help with this)
      Shadowy Man
      Electric Shadowy Man
      Fire Shadowy Man
      Big Scary Shadowy Man
      Drone
      Flying Brick that controls drones
      Flying Brick that controls zombies
      Floating mines
      Poltergeist

Damn near all of these are just silhouettes that just shoot a projectile at you. They are boring to look at. They are about as fun to fight. You use the same methods against anything short of the tanky Technopaths. The game is about an unknowable alien other that's capable of god knows what and which is actively altering the environment with some strange substance- there's every excuse to have all sorts of weird extradimensional shit. The Nightmare demonstrates they have some adaptibility, so why the frick aren't there more specially adapted creatures? When you start going into the inner Russian capsule, you should be encountering all sorts of progressively weirder new abominations, you're going into the heart of darkness, but nope. Same old shit.

This. Good games are far and few between these days. You've got to take what you can get. Prey and Death Stranding are the only games I've enjoyed since 2015.

Without Typhon powers and low ammo they were pretty annoying to deal with tbh

lots of cut content (trauma was originally it's own level)
unbalanced mid to late game for most players if they scour the first couple of levels for all the upgrades available
moronic nightmare pathfinding makes him a joke
needs to additional enemies to show up later even though I like the phantoms and mimics they become pushovers too quickly
overall I don't think it was too compromised for consoles, I think people that were expecting more run and gun like bioshock were initially disappointed but imo it's a modern classic and it gets better every time I replay it.

yeah pretty anticlimactic, iirc I just snuck up on the merc guy and bonked him once

Without Typhon powers and low ammo they were pretty annoying to deal with tbh

annoying because they keep respawning, just put something in front of the machine and they can't create them

the gameplay itself is forgettable because it does a terrible job of generating tension. You become all powerful in two hours with middling resource management, and because it's not a stealth game you don't have the optional challenge of "what if I don't get seen ONCE" there to make things tougher

    1. bethesda published so anyone looking for a looking glass tier game knows its dumbed down
    2. enemies are black blobs
    3. has same name as original prey which people pretend to have really liked because they really liked the prey 2 trailer.

Modern gamers are trained to do what they told and when presented with the opportunity to find a solution for themselves they think it's boring

      >issa modern gamer problem
you know what's great? when a game is challenging enough to where looking for varied solutions is satisfying and rewarding and not just doing it because you feel like it instead of blasting enemies with your plentiful resources

prey has a great thing going for it with the alternative ways to solve problems. it rarely does anything with it that you remember, because it usually doesn't matter.

        >because you feel like it instead of blasting enemies with your plentiful resources
you only feel like that because you are too stupid to understand the games basic ass scenarios and play it as you would any other game

I did all the sequence skipping shit of my own accord and it wasn't enough to make the game as interesting as people pretend. This is basic as frick game design. If you don't want a player to play the game in a boring way, stop them.

            >This is basic as frick game design
not compared to it's contemporaries. it really sucks that prey didn't see a lot of mainstream success it has a lot of good ideas that could be extracted and repurposed depending on the genre

What went wrong is that game should have been a lot longer. By the end it felt like I only played the first half of the game. What was the point in upgrading fully if I never got to use any of my equipment or skills? New game plus is ass as it doesn't give you back all your tools and weapons.

I felt like the gameplay balance at the beginning of the game was better as it felt more survival horror esque. Maybe the game should have leaned more in that direction instead.

      >should have been a lot longer
yea. it works great for what it is. the station is very tightly designed but you very quickly outgrow the station in terms of ability.
there's no second half of pure gameplay to play with your new toys. shit, even a no needles run get lots of resources to distract, sneak by or even eliminate enemies
it feels like a glorified tech demo, like other devs should be taking notes. it's a very tight experience, i like it i've played it 8 times but every time i'm left with that feeling of "that's it?"
      >I felt like the gameplay balance at the beginning of the game was better as it felt more survival horror esque
after playing re2r and og re4 a few times, i agree with this. those games do quite a bit to waste your resources at the appropriate time and keep things feeling tense all the way to the end

blowing up/nullwaving the station then going to the moon in the second half might've been cool

I'm glad that we got this game. It might be the last immersive sim game with publisher backing that we'll ever see. The genre is too niche now and there's no developer with the passion to make one anymore.

1.) Piss easy game on all difficulties. Endgame Morgan is so loaded up on upgrades that it's impossible for aliens to pose a challenge anymore. You can practically solo the entire game with a shotgun and combat slow-mode time.
2.) moronic triple plot twist ending that raises more questions than answers. (You're the real Morgan doing shit on a regular space ship, until it turns out you're maybe not the real Morgan and the ship is infested with aliens, until it turns out you've never been the real Morgan because the entire spaceship-under-attack scenario was a test, and you've been an alien yourself the whole time. So what happen to the real Morgan Yu? Who the frick cares, GAME END)

7.5/10 game that could've easily been a 9/10 if not for the moronation.
