>They got sued for the backpaddles so they had to stop making them.
Patent has been invalidated, so they could re-start production with a v3 Steam Controller, a few prototypes have leaked out a few times over the years, but I think they're being absolutely damn sure Microsoft can't pull the same crap on them again funding a patent troll that they did last time.
Nothing, it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Actually one of my favorite controllers ever. The problem was that it solved a problem nobody had. It was meant for PC users wanting to play mouse and keyboard games on a gamepad. You would never do this. But it was great for playing console ports on PC, because even though there was already 3rd party software that let you remap a gamepad however you wanted, nothing was as tightly integrated or offered the amount of options that the SC did.
Are there any other controllers like this one still being made? With touch pads for analog sticks? It seems so much more comfortable for your hands. Pushing sticks for hours on end seems like a great way to get arthritis.
Wish there was a way to hook a Steam Deck to a PC and just use it as a controller, or Valve can get off their asses and make a Steam Controller 2. Would legitimately throw out all my controllers and buy a SC2 if one existed.
>Wish there was a way to hook a Steam Deck to a PC and just use it as a controller,
You can do that though. At least on Linux based OSes.
I think the poor Windows controller support is part of why it hasn't happened. There are persistent rumors Valve is prepping a v4 of the Steam Machine that can act as either a TV PC, or a VR wireless base station using SteamOS 3.
If they do that, they'll launch the new 'Neptune' Steam Controller along side it.
Why would you put the control stick and face buttons down there? they're the ones that get the most use yet they're put in the most uncomfortable place.
The original concept was that it would be a controller for 3d games where you would have precise mouse-like control, and where you would never need to move your thumbs away from the control surfaces.
They went to a more conventional cluster of buttons because it was less for players to adapt to, and then from there they decided to add the analog stick back on for games that worked better with it.
If you take the time to set a game up to use the trackpads and rear buttons as intended it really could work exceptionally well. I'd never liked playing even casual FPS games with an analog stick, but the Steam Controller felt natural to me.
Of course with the Steam Deck they decided on just doing the full SNES-style controls, plus the dual analog, plus an additional set of buttons on the back.
The only thing it really misses from the Steam Controller is the satisfying physical 'click' at the end of the trigger pull, but you can still have actions on full pull.
>initial config software was a bit shit and it wants you to configure it for everything >feels cheap and stiff, especially the bumpers and rear paddles >they compromised the layout to appease normalhomosexuals without going back to the drawing board
Having a good DPad would have been better than getting memed into having a stick, but the bulbous handles just do not do any favors to the SNES bottom surgery layout that they imported from modern controllers.
I really like the dual stage triggers though, hopefully they can put their experience from the Steam Deck and Knuckles into making a new controller that's better.
They got memed into it, the first prototype layout with that controller shape didn't include it.
this garbage has the opposite layout of Xbox 360 controller , your thumbs will hurt after an hour or two
The 360 controller is also ass and chose most of its layout just so that it could sabotage overworked 3rd party devs into fricking up games on other consoles. The layout is fine if you want to use the trackpads, but the ergonomics are shit if you want to use the other face inputs.
Gabens obsession with "innovation" means they'll never be a serious hardware company
It'd be fine if they actually gave any progress reports for literally anything instead of having literally every detail succed out of patent filings and code in their client and software. Innovation is necessary, we're permanently stuck in 6th gen.
Judge in the first case ignored prior art, and granted a stoppage on sales based on the 'patent' which was a crudely drawn picture of an Xbox controller with some things on the back. It doesn't resemble the Steam Controller at all, but Microsoft paid the patent troll and 'suggested' they go after Valve.
They got the patent invalidated by proving there was nothing novel about buttons on the back of a controller in 2014, which is why the same thing hasn't happened to the Deck.
US IP law is a literal joke and they should have kept Lord of the Rings in their public domain as a punchline.
>shell and face buttons feel like cheap plastic >config could be too complicated for the average user (although the customization is one of the best features) >slightly too small, making the joystick and face buttons awkward to hold >out of production
everything else is great and i wish they would make a new version, or that other companies would adopt what makes the steam controller so good
Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
Honestly just needed a physical d-pad instead of a physical left stick.
Decrease the size of the right touchpad and increase the size of the buttons and space them out more.

Not a mature enough idea that, ironically, overvalued the trackpads as a replacement for traditional input (see the "d-pad" trackpad)
The trackpads make an absolutely marvelous addition to traditional inputs as seen on the Steam Deck but make for a poor main input method outside of the context of mouse-heavy games
The only issue is that all the ones I have the trackpads are getting old and wearing out and getting a replacement is impossible. I love these things and I use them for everything.
Please, if you have anything similar to recommend, let me know
was really hoping this POS could be a good steam controller alternative but it sends only keyboard presses which defeats the point of an analog stick
FPS with control stick and mouse probably isn't competitively optimal but it sure is comfy
I have two, they are so good, the only thing that sucks is that the lean feature is broken and was never fixed. I hope someday we get a 2.0 controller.
I would really want a steamdeck controller, that is, the controller part of the steam deck as a stand alone controller. Just remove the computer and Valve has some of my money.
Nothing, it was just too complicated for most of the poorgays that infest gaming these days.
Then why can't I buy one without paying scalper prices for used controllers?
How much is it? I have one sealed from when they went on sale for like $5
im seeing used around $60
They got sued for the backpaddles so they had to stop making them.
fpbp, Steam Controller is the ultimate filter.

people are too moronic to set up their own custom controllers. They also feared no JOYSTICKS
Zased
The steam controller was cheaper than the 360 controller though.
Have you ever held one?
I got one at a thrift store for $5 and Holy frick are they miserably uncomfortable
Yes, they're comfortable once you get them setup well. Would be nice to have a real dpad, but that's about it.
I'm confused what custom button layout has to do woth shitty ergonomics?
The dpad is my only complaint with it. It's a hassle to press and impossible for side scrollers.
this garbage has the opposite layout of Xbox 360 controller , your thumbs will hurt after an hour or two
t. never used it
Gabens autism

logitech patent-trolled them so they had to pull out
I still use it today. In fact a friend of mine just played GTA 4 on my pc with it for the first time and got used to it pretty easily.
They're still on early phase of becoming hardware company.
Gabens obsession with "innovation" means they'll never be a serious hardware company
I don't want to spend 1 hour tinkering with a controller just for a game that would be better played with KBM anyway
Are there any other controllers like this one still being made? With touch pads for analog sticks? It seems so much more comfortable for your hands. Pushing sticks for hours on end seems like a great way to get arthritis.
Steam Deck has two touchpads and the sticks tehmselves are touch-sensitive and all of it is customizable
Wish there was a way to hook a Steam Deck to a PC and just use it as a controller, or Valve can get off their asses and make a Steam Controller 2. Would legitimately throw out all my controllers and buy a SC2 if one existed.

yeah but paying out the ass for a deck sucks. this controller is great but after it breaks I'm SoL. gabe better get off his ass and make a 2.0 already
nothing
its my favorite controller
they used the tech in the Steam Deck and people love it no? I wish they still made them.
just at first glace? only one analog stick.
convex stick
people too stupid to learn the near perfection
no sequel

trackpads r shit no matter how much trackpad shills try to cope
That's what the gyro is for.

i have 2 and its one of my favorite controllers
