It's decent at roleplaying but just shy of being a good roleplaying game. You can give your character all this history and unique dialogue options only for it to not matter outside of your personal headcanon for the character.
I enjoy playing the game despite it's niggles. It's just a shame it has to be so... what it is. It will be interesting to see what ti transforms into with mods and DLC after 2 or 3 years.
What else is there to do outside of those three things? Grav jump to planets and reach 100% surveying doing tedious bullshit? Build ships? The game is a timesink but that doesn't mean it has lots of meaningful content.

The good parts of the game are better than most of the stuff Bethesda has put out since Morrowind, problem is that's where the praise fricking stops. It's like they learned almost nothing from Fallout 4. Settlements are shit, they were shit, they will always be shit. Outposts are a closed-loop system where you grind resources to build more outposts, and there's literally no purpose beyond that. The entire game space is nothing but major points populated by absolutely nothing in-between that would compel you to avoid fast-traveling, which isn't even an option because fast-travel is mandatory. The shipbuilder is a useless gimmick because space battles represent less than 1% of the game. There's no reason to explore any of the planets whatsoever.
The story is cool, the NG+ gimmick is actually really cool, but everything about the game makes Skyrim feel like a complex open-world RPG in comparison, and I fricking panned the shit out of that game at the time for not being an RPG.

The problem with the NG+ gimmick is that you can squeeze one, maybe two extra playthroughs out of it before it gets fricking old. Also, the way it works is kind of stupid because it encourages speedrunning the MSQ to get to the "real game", and it makes it hard to commit to a playthrough when everything you worked for goes out the window. Luckily Bethesda went full moron (again) by delaying the Creation Kit like they did with FO4, ensuring that no modding community pops up around the game due to a lack of interest.
They really don't do enough with the NG+. You should be able to walk up to the hunter in the viewport and ask him to team up and kill everyone as soon as you land in new atlantis. The idea is so cool on paper but they don't do anything with it
The core gameplay of Starfield is good once you put lots of points into Tech and Science, and the shooting feels nice, but it has the worst main quest of any Bethesda game, and I feel the "good content" is spaced out a lot from each other.
And the universe of El Monstruo Americano and old Korean women makes it hard to care for the setting, plus how ultra sanitized everything is.
they say how bad and addictive aurora is but then you never see any junkies and if you pick the perk where you have parents even they're using it for fun with no ill effects

theres no natural discovery of interesting locations like in previous titles
this is exacerbated by the shitty fast travel system and map menus
every unique location is quest related, everything else isnt worth visiting except to farm weapons or materials
base building and planet surveying can be safely ignored without much loss
There actually are some really neat locations to find, and quite a few of them don't seem to be quest related. The problem is that some of them are, and you don't know which ones. So if you investigate early you'll be sent to a duplicate of the exact same dungeon later on a quest. When you avoid pois because of this, you miss out on the ones that don't show up in quests.
Hilariously, you can't even look up which ones because the main quest puts artifacts in random POIs when you start the game. So there's actually no way to know which ones will be quest related for your character. I got sent to a mine and an outpost but no quest ever sent me to the cryo lab which is a really nice dungeon. I almost missed it. Some other anon complained his main quest sent him to two cryo labs.

The problem with the NG+ gimmick is that you can squeeze one, maybe two extra playthroughs out of it before it gets fricking old. Also, the way it works is kind of stupid because it encourages speedrunning the MSQ to get to the "real game", and it makes it hard to commit to a playthrough when everything you worked for goes out the window. Luckily Bethesda went full moron (again) by delaying the Creation Kit like they did with FO4, ensuring that no modding community pops up around the game due to a lack of interest.
They really don't do enough with the NG+. You should be able to walk up to the hunter in the viewport and ask him to team up and kill everyone as soon as you land in new atlantis. The idea is so cool on paper but they don't do anything with it

The core gameplay of Starfield is good once you put lots of points into Tech and Science, and the shooting feels nice, but it has the worst main quest of any Bethesda game, and I feel the "good content" is spaced out a lot from each other.
And the universe of El Monstruo Americano and old Korean women makes it hard to care for the setting, plus how ultra sanitized everything is.

like with most bethesda games, the more you play it the more you see thru it and see how shallow it is
the biggest reason i would say is that there really isnt any sense of discovery to the game
theres no natural discovery of interesting locations like in previous titles
this is exacerbated by the shitty fast travel system and map menus
every unique location is quest related, everything else isnt worth visiting except to farm weapons or materials
base building and planet surveying can be safely ignored without much loss
Base building is the best source of exp and cash.
There actually are some really neat locations to find, and quite a few of them don't seem to be quest related. The problem is that some of them are, and you don't know which ones. So if you investigate early you'll be sent to a duplicate of the exact same dungeon later on a quest. When you avoid pois because of this, you miss out on the ones that don't show up in quests.
Hilariously, you can't even look up which ones because the main quest puts artifacts in random POIs when you start the game. So there's actually no way to know which ones will be quest related for your character. I got sent to a mine and an outpost but no quest ever sent me to the cryo lab which is a really nice dungeon. I almost missed it. Some other anon complained his main quest sent him to two cryo labs.
