I did buy Alan Wake 2.
But to answer your actual question, I think the biggest issue is that it's a year packed with games and people only have so much money.
Alan Wake 2 came out within a month of Spider-Man 2, Mario Wonder, Assassins Creed Mirage, Call of Duty MW3, Ghost Runner 2, Mario RPG, Lords of the Fallen, Robocop, etc.
The only thing it had going with it was being the only big horror title in October but that clearly wasn't enough.
EGS exclusivity obviously didn't help either but I think people exaggerate the importance of that to your average gamer.
Just waiting for a sale. I wasn't a fan of AW1 so I'm dubious about the sequel.
If it makes you feel better, I've grown to hate AW1 and love AW2.
Only like 10% or less of PC owners can even run the game.
And less then that even bothered to get it.

If I remember right, Alan Wake was from the guy who openly said he wanted game endings to be paid DLC so second-hand buyers would still have to pay him. I wouldn't give a frickwad like that any money or further attention.
I started playing AW2 and the game clearly felt like you needed to know AW1 to get the most out of it. It felt like jumping into Twin Peaks s3 without watching the original seasons.
I went back and forced myself through AW1 which was a 7/10 game at best, most people aren't going to play a sequel to a barely decent 13 year old game
Transfield flopped and $70 DLC is underperforming, Xbox cuck.
I enjoyed the first one but this one looked like shit so I just didn't care, Remedy's games have been pretty mediocre since MP3.
