the irony, ironically is that there is no irony anymore, thats just literally their default state and all they know how to write about. Anyone having a genuine fear, motivation or strength played straight is completely alien to them and needs to be expressed via joke

        Anonymous

Quirky jokes are fine, there's just got to actually be a fricking joke.
If you can't identify a punchline, scrap the line and rewrite it.
If it's not meant to be a joke, don't inflect it like one.
If everyone else is making the joke, try writing a new one, or at least one that's not overused.
If you've already repeatedly made the same joke, pick something else to joke about.

Follow those guidelines and chances are you'll get rid of most of the writing quirks people b***h about.

Action games always always had bad writing. I remember not understanding anything that happened in Halo. Its story is very poorly told. It just has moody music and action sequences that impress boys and young men enough that they don't think about how bad the writing is.

And before Halo, you would never even expect an action game to have that much dialogue. It was just super simple "here's your mission" kind of dialogue.

You should only expect decent writing from an RPG or Adventure games. And I mean real adventure games. Not action games with obligatory "puzzles" to extend the game's play time.

I was born in '95. The movement in Halo sucks ass, the shield mechanics suck ass, the gunplay sucks ass, the aggressive autoaim and the absurd corrections it does when using melee weapons is just poor game design and the vehicles are clunky. Somehow they managed to make everything worse from Reach onwards.

Halo's story mode sucks ass and Master Chief has the personality of a wet handkerchief.

Never read it. My family was never particularly religious. Thank the light.
All the bible parallels were completely lost on me. The story of noah's arc is famous, so I get the gist of that. Something created to escape a great catastrophe. Within it, the seeds of new life to repopulate the world. But beyond that, what is happening? Why are factions fighting each other? Why do some people change allegiances? Why the betrayals? Why the hallucinations? It's all just kind of murky.

Cool guy finds other aliens. Cool guy finds robot that wants to help by activating the ring. • 8 months ago
          Anonymous

True. But removing bad is pointless, when the only other option is worse.

Millenial “life experience” is consooming Disney produced pozzhole garbage, collecting plastic funko pop shit, and letting other men sleep with your wife.

The Disney Millennials consumed during their formative years wasn't "pozzed". It was a second golden age, with some of the best creations. The reason Millennials are so devoted to these brands, was that consistently from 1980 to roughly 2010 (30 years), they delivered millennials gold directly into our veins. And then they only started to turn sour when zoomers were born.

Millennials get made fun of for being harry potter fanatics. But zoomers will never know what it's like to have a faithful adaptation that isn't ruined by diversity. You will never know that joy. So you fume and judge. Calling them sour grapes.

I also look at the writers for Forespoken. 1 of them is a millennial. The other 3 are Gen X. https://forspoken.fandom.com/wiki/Forspoken
It was directed by Takeshi Aramaki and Takefumi Terada with Gary Whitta providing world and lore concept, Amy Hennig providing the story concept, Allison Rymer and Todd Stashwick serving as script writers.

Allison Rymer is the Millennial at only 28 years old. All the others are in their 50s. Gen X. And Allison is a late Millenial. Born in 1995. She's only 2 years away from being officially Gen Z

            Anonymous

            >Allison Rymer is the Millennial at only 28 years old. All the others are in their 50s. Gen X. And Allison is a late Millenial. Born in 1995. She's only 2 years away from being officially Gen Z
Also, Justin Roiland was born in 1980. So only 1 year earlier, and he would have been Gen X. The writer credit for High on Life is Alec Robbin. Who is 33 years old. So he's a real millennial. Still, the bad "writing" we associate with High on Life, is all done by Roiland's improv. Roiland ranting into a microphone, and then they use that materiel in place of a real written script.
So what we're actually seeing here, is something of a gap. The "millennials" involved are either very close to Gen X, or very close to Gen Z.

I am writing for my game slowly but surely, I’ve been having in depth conversations in my head for years with my characters and often try to think of things from their perspective in the shower and stuff. Over the last six years I’ve managed to flesh them out very nicely in my mind and have gotten ideas for several sequels and spin offs. Only problem is the game I’m working in now is the size of a AAA title from 10-15 years ago and I’m just one guy.

Ernest Hemingway was a great writer because he went to war, and lived a life full of experiences. These modern writers have very clearly never left their basement or experienced any kind of real adversity, so their imaginations are bland, their characters flat, and their dialogue awkward and pathetic, like the writers.

Many of the best writers ever lived very sheltered and basic lives.
Dostoevsky didn't do anything interesting as a person, other than write. Poe didn't do much interesting as a person until he fell into disrepair after becoming an author. Lovecraft left his hometown (and bedroom) basically once and hated every minute of it.

The adventurer-writer was a rarity even in the past.

All of those writers took in previously existing literary culture and built their own work on the foundation of it.

Say what? Just going off memory he was involved with politics (the wrong kind according to the government) for which he got arrested and sentenced to death by firing squad. At the very last second new orders arrived and he instead got sent to a labour camp in Siberia where he spent 5 years doing hard labour. That is not living a "sheltered life".

Being sheltered in the past is way different than being sheltered today. With modern conveniences, you really don't have to leave your home if you don't want to. But before modern conveniences, you had to leave to do anything. You want to look something up? Got to go to the library. You want to mail something? Got to go to the post office. You want to get in touch with a publisher, you have to locate their office and travel there.
Every aspect of life, forced you to contact another human being in order to get ahead. And forces you to get out of the house.

Nowadays, you can get everything you want delivered to you. Business is conducted online from the comfort of your home. Entertainment is fed to you through screens.

Ironic shitposting is still shitposting. Plus, i have a feeling that it didn't need to be cringe on purpose because it would have ended cringey even if it didn't.
My problem with this kind of humor is that there is no joke there except reference to something cringey that is funny to remember. That becomes stale, especially when everyone and their grandma does that. Like Robot Chicken once the novelty of stop motion adult swim show worn out: yeah, He-Man was cheesy and 1960s Aquaman was useless, but where is the joke?

You know what you're getting with Rick and Morty and their games always has at least one pretty funny thing. I don't, however, want an action game written for people who are so stoned they don't know what day it is so the game has to remind them every 30 seconds.
    >"Wow, a talking gun, wow that's not normal, guns don't normally talk!"
That's not what any person would say if their Glock started talking to them. Most people would start with asking "how" and "why" not just saying "Wow that's not normal and wow that just happened!". Like, let's skip the part addressing the people asleep in the back of the audience. We don't need to tell the 4 year olds that it isn't normal for guns to talk. Even if a wacky adventure world if it's not normal it's going to be demonstrated without knocking you on the head with it and gasp, it might be more mentally engaging this way.

All companies constantly look for ways to "trim the fat" and all it results in, are too few workers that are forced to work like animals because management would rather have them work double-time all the time, rather than just doing the right fricking thing and hiring that one extra guy to take the load off.

No, but the adults do. And you know who no longer is working fast food? Adults. The pew research source above literally shows that significantly more kids are working than there were ten years ago.

If you have such a good memory, think back. Have you ever seen an adult working in fast food? In retail? Yes? Okay, there you have it. Fast food and retail employee shortages are therefore impacted by adult employment opportunities. In fact, it's BECAUSE more adults are not working these jobs that kids are working more now.

When the economy is in the shitter, like it was in 2008, adults settle for fast food or retail jobs. They aren't right now because there's tons of better jobs available. So the only people working retail or fast food are kids and morons, and there aren't enough to fill them.

when i was younger you never saw this hostile generational fighting just the usual old people thinking young people were lazy and stupid and young people thinking old people didnt understand them. there seems to be a way more toxic generational hatred then before. (this is also happening on a sex and race basis)
What i also hate is how teenagers and young adults get everything filterd through an algoritmh now so everyone talks and types the same about X subject (like this thread which every kid has seen the youtube video crying about millenials so thats going to be what they believe now.

There was always hostile generational fighting you dumb frogposting turdburglar. Even when boomers were young, the elders of their time were seething and throwing fits over the youth smoking plants and partying while having sex without getting married first. Those boomers, young at the time, fought to stick it to the man. Of course, then they became the man and decided everyone younger than them shouldn't have the same freedoms and opportunities.

Men are their own worst enemies because you all show your asses on social media every day saying how much you hate women. And most of you are low value losers with no jobs or hobbies or drive in life, why the frick would any woman look at you twice? The majority of you would've been killed at war a few hundred years ago but now bottom tier men think they're entitled to spread their seed and create even more short balding ugly offspring. Feminism just gave women the opportunities to have their own jobs and afford their own homes without needing to settle for some useless scrote who'd beat her and the kids. If you can't cope with the fact that women are looking for more in men now than simply having a penis then you should just do society a favor and have a nice day.

I think I know why this kind of humour has been prevalent for like 15 years now.
Since every kid grows up watching cable and shitposting on the internet, everyone now grows up a critic.
This thread is a perfect example of what's the norm.
If everyone's a critic, everyone's "literate" about tropes and the basic structure of humour. The most direct and easy way to express one's "in" on this sort of knowledge is through ironic humour. The examples in the OP are facile and to the point.
Doubly, since everyone's a critic, insecure writers space themselves from their own work fearing that they too may be the butt-end of someone else's better joke.

The only "writing" most people interact with in their daily lives are reddit or twitter posts, and they have no understanding of good narrative conventions. You'd think they would because of how consumptive people are with media today, but nothing ever gets a chance to linger or be ingested fully because people are burning their brains out binging hundreds of episodes of shows per week. They're fricked. Completely moronic by their life.

The current social media landscape trains people to be fake and dishonest, and never be genuine.

Doing anything artistic or creative then becomes a challenge because that would require some actual vulnerability and actual expression, so instead they just make sealclap political talking points and wrap everything in 10 protective layers of irony.

It's not so much a creative trend as much as it is a view into how most people today are not allowed to express themselves in ways not sanctioned by someone else first.
