Pacman World were great takes on platformer Pacman that even did some things Sonic should be doing in 3D and did them basically better on the first try. Honorable mention goes to Ratchet for doing the same thing as well (perfected rail/rail switching on the first try, long before Sonic did with Unleashed) and is literally a far better series than Sonic and I believe that's literally because it's not a Japanese game. Any and all western examples of platformers just has far more polish and better animation quality than anything made by Japs, including Mario.

Speed is the reward in Sonic, not something you get for free. Hazards are there to be hit, otherwise what's the point of them? SA3 understands that way better than SA2, which has levels like Hot Crater, where you only need a couple of inputs other than holding right for the whole thing.

Level design isn't so much of the problem in SA3 as it is the super zoomed in camera. If it wasn't like that, you'd be able to see things coming.
But beyond that, SA3 also had pretty bland level design. SA2, most stages had 3-5 levels. And the higher you were, the more safe you were. But it was harder to maintain your speed and momentum on the higher parts of the stage. It was constantly trying to make you fall farther down. They traded enemy obstacles and walls for "you can keep running, but you need to use jumps and R skills to keep going." Which I personally like better. And beyond that, there's still plenty of levels in SA2 where you can't just "hold right to win." Starting with Stage 4 and on. And really going crazy with the pitfalls on Stage 5 (where you literally need to get to the higher levels of the stage or you run into dead ends and die).
I dont trust people who dislike Shadow. Its only real problems are dumb stage clear conditions and an overreliance on 'defeat all the enemies in this area to make a barrier drop' segments. There are far more games with far more issues than what Shadow had.
There is nothing Shadow does well. Nothing you can name that previous games didn't do better. Level design, presentation, art direction, story, OST, bosses, ranking system, camera, objectives, objective requirements, movement/attack options, 100% completion, last story, etc. It's dogshit to the core. It's equal to Forces and Boom.

It takes the heroes formula and then takes away the mode swapping, which is already a huge plus. Obviously spamming attack to whittle down the too-large health bar of 'big enemy that never attacks you' in order to get past a barrier and get to the next part of the level is still shit, but at least you arent doing it with the controls of Power Mode.

How? Shadow, on his own, is nothing without his guns. His homing attack is shit, his spin dash is shit, and his melee attacks are especially shit. He has no worthwhile attack options unless he has a gun. >but at least you arent doing it with the controls of Power Mode.
Which took less time and controlled better? Also, just a tip, you can stand still and mash B as Knuckles or Omega to perform either an infinite 1-2 punch combo, or make smaller strides while taking swings at your enemy.

Hey, you could always homing attack them. And if you're not satisfied, you can level Sonic up to make it stronger. You know, something Shadow doesn't have.
I played it with the mod to make objectives less shit and it held up a lot better that way. Granted it did frick with the mission where you race Sonic because you gotta sit there forever for the neutral path and you can't A-rank it easily because the time bonus wasn't adjusted for the waiting around.
Sonic had already crossed its quality/mandate even horizon by that point, Boom is just one of the results of Sonic going full-zombie while trying desperately to break that status.

Nintendo pays SEGA to make shitty Sonic games so it never overshadow Mario games because Sonic always placed higher than Mario in popularity polls, even in Smash games.

It's late to reply now, but yeah, I'd agree personally. You could argue it was The one, as it went far enough to, if not every single one, then restore plenty of legacy Sonic interpretations into one singular planet, part of worldbuilding. The move was maybe basic, although clever enough for satisfying both the fans and the creative producers at once. The soft-boot Archie and its directions are pretty neat enough to suffice another try: yet another re-booted Archie Sonic from scratch, that incorporates major part of pre-boot's and soft-boot's characters and elements, re-purposing them into "new" characters with a clean state. In fact, I heard that was really the plan from start for soft-boot...?
Speaking about pre-boot, I don't think it's as unsalvageable as some relate, just at onces immersion-breaking, per loosen quality control. There are writers like Karl and Gallagher to appreciate of, beyond just Ian.

SA3 might have been good on a TV screen with a larger resolution and a non zoomed in camera. But it was just about everything you shouldn't do on a small handheld.

People complain about SA3 "level design" all the time but the only examples I've seen them give are just the game punishing you for holding right without thinking. Speed is the reward in Sonic, not something you get for free. Hazards are there to be hit, otherwise what's the point of them? SA3 understands that way better than SA2, which has levels like Hot Crater, where you only need a couple of inputs other than holding right for the whole thing.
Level design isn't so much of the problem in SA3 as it is the super zoomed in camera. If it wasn't like that, you'd be able to see things coming.
But beyond that, SA3 also had pretty bland level design. SA2, most stages had 3-5 levels. And the higher you were, the more safe you were. But it was harder to maintain your speed and momentum on the higher parts of the stage. It was constantly trying to make you fall farther down. They traded enemy obstacles and walls for "you can keep running, but you need to use jumps and R skills to keep going." Which I personally like better. And beyond that, there's still plenty of levels in SA2 where you can't just "hold right to win." Starting with Stage 4 and on. And really going crazy with the pitfalls on Stage 5 (where you literally need to get to the higher levels of the stage or you run into dead ends and die).

I dont trust people who dislike Shadow. Its only real problems are dumb stage clear conditions and an overreliance on 'defeat all the enemies in this area to make a barrier drop' segments. There are far more games with far more issues than what Shadow had.
There is nothing Shadow does well. Nothing you can name that previous games didn't do better. Level design, presentation, art direction, story, OST, bosses, ranking system, camera, objectives, objective requirements, movement/attack options, 100% completion, last story, etc. It's dogshit to the core. It's equal to Forces and Boom.
To play devil's advocate, the CGI cutscenes are super high quality for its time. They still look pretty damn good.

Im not saying its a shining beacon of the series the eclipses SA2, I'm saying its a medium game that plays as a slightly better version of the Heroes formula.
What I'm saying isn't that it's not the best at anything, it's that it's not good at anything. It does nothing good, or even decent. It doesn't even improve upon Heroes in any significant or noteworthy ways, and in most instances, feels worse to play.

It takes the heroes formula and then takes away the mode swapping, which is already a huge plus. Obviously spamming attack to whittle down the too-large health bar of 'big enemy that never attacks you' in order to get past a barrier and get to the next part of the level is still shit, but at least you arent doing it with the controls of Power Mode.

How? Shadow, on his own, is nothing without his guns. His homing attack is shit, his spin dash is shit, and his melee attacks are especially shit. He has no worthwhile attack options unless he has a gun.

Which took less time and controlled better? Also, just a tip, you can stand still and mash B as Knuckles or Omega to perform either an infinite 1-2 punch combo, or make smaller strides while taking swings at your enemy.

I played it with the mod to make objectives less shit and it held up a lot better that way. Granted it did frick with the mission where you race Sonic because you gotta sit there forever for the neutral path and you can't A-rank it easily because the time bonus wasn't adjusted for the waiting around.

Sega's biggest mistake with Sonic was posing him as a rival to Mario and then effectively conceding the console war and the mascot war in the US only four years later by releasing the Shiturn without an original 3D Sonic game.

Nintendo pays SEGA to make shitty Sonic games so it never overshadow Mario games because Sonic always placed higher than Mario in popularity polls, even in Smash games.
It tries too hard to have its own identity, but the reality is that Sonic wasn't made to have one. Sonic was always conceptualized as the cartoony japanese mickey mouse with dragon ball traits made to defeat Mario. Then they tried giving him unique qualities like meme speed and physics gameplay and later grafitti, shonen, butt rock and even later memes and american humor. It's a inherently soulless franchise about mixing up shit together to see what sticks.
It's no wonder the movies have been the most successful Sonic product in over 20 years and they are literally just generic kids' blockbusters in the nature of the Smurfs and chipmunks.

The fangames are an interesting monster of their own because "sonic-like" seems to be a subgenre of its own in platformers
Sega itself and Sonic Team. Just look at their reaction to Mania which was the most well received Sonic title in years; they shut down the sequel and rushed out Origins. Their biggest mistake was not going in two different directions for their mainline releases. a 2D entry where Sonic will always be his strongest, and a 3D entry in line with the Adventure titles which were the strongest 3D entries. If they had done that then the series would have been in a far better place.

It's late to reply now, but yeah, I'd agree personally. You could argue it was The one, as it went far enough to, if not every single one, then restore plenty of legacy Sonic interpretations into one singular planet, part of worldbuilding. The move was maybe basic, although clever enough for satisfying both the fans and the creative producers at once. The soft-boot Archie and its directions are pretty neat enough to suffice another try: yet another re-booted Archie Sonic from scratch, that incorporates major part of pre-boot's and soft-boot's characters and elements, re-purposing them into "new" characters with a clean state. In fact, I heard that was really the plan from start for soft-boot...?
Speaking about pre-boot, I don't think it's as unsalvageable as some relate, just at onces immersion-breaking, per loosen quality control. There are writers like Karl and Gallagher to appreciate of, beyond just Ian.
