They started to give the characters crazier clothes and hair so they'd have more distinctive silhouettes. This probably became more necessary as the series went on, and they had repeat type specialists, so the trainers had to have more and more of a distinctive identity outside of the type of pokemon they used.
No one dresses like Sabrina. Stop pretending that Gen 1 was le grounded and realistic.
