Sugimori and Pokemon's art style changed way before then. Half the characters in the OP are Gen 5.
Watercolor stopped being the default style late into Gen 2
>Misty
Sporty, tomboyish gym leader girl whose gym is a swimming pool, and she's garbed accordingly >Erika
Literal yamato nadeshiko character in traditional Japanese clothing >Sabrina
Wearing some ridiculous elastane-riddled costume, almost reminiscent of a superhero suit, probably to communicate how she's playing into how she's been perceived as someone with "special powers" since childhood >Lorelei
An actual adult woman after an entire game of fighting other teens and adult men as bosses >Caitlin
A fairytale maiden awakens from a long slumber in a giant bed to do battle with you, another eccentric Psychic trainer >Lusamine
Businesswoman in heels and a black-and-white dress, communicates her connection to Aether, her crazy hairdo also eventually connects to her obsession with Ultra Beasts >Iris
Recently crowned Champion gets her own princess dress >Elesa and Valerie
Come the frick on OP, both of these characters work in high fashion outside of their Gym Leader duties >Olympia
Guess fricking what, another Psychic trainer decides to be a weirdo, this time playing up her fortune-teller mystic hobby
They started to give the characters crazier clothes and hair so they'd have more distinctive silhouettes. This probably became more necessary as the series went on, and they had repeat type specialists, so the trainers had to have more and more of a distinctive identity outside of the type of pokemon they used.
I only like Sabrina. Shes badass. Everyone else is just there
Imagine the HUGS
I get that you're shitposting and all but if you wished for it to be truly effective you shouldn't have included Caitlin and Lusamine
xy happened
XY is closer to Sugimori's classic character design style. Only Valerie and Olympia are very extravagant

What happened to Gens 2-4?
From 5th Gen onwards, the designs became extremely extravagant and ornate. Before there were only some quirky characters like Fantina and Tucker.

Elaborate? She is literally the Kalos equivalent of Erika

No one dresses like Sabrina. Stop pretending that Gen 1 was le grounded and realistic.
