You're essentially asking for hidden loading screens, because even with "DA POWER OF DA SSD" both of the modern consoles with games fully designed for their storage can't be completely seamless.
WoW was made using literal sorcery and cocaine-infused lines of code. To this day multiple parts of WoW are so utterly fricked code-wise that even modern tech can't undo the tangles of digital snakes without causing irreparable damage to the rest of the game.

There is none and it's something I used to complain about, but you just accept Square is lazy as frick and it's how the game is. The world feels boxed in with the boundary walls but it's the design choice they chose.

The problem is you can never make game environments as large as they are irl, if everything is seamless, suddenly you have to rationalize why it's possible to walk across an entire continent in 5 minutes and so on. When you have loadscreens your mind gets to fill in the gaps and your imagination is way better than anything they can put in game.
nah playing diablo 4 made me realize what a trap open worlds are in themepark games. It makes the theme park nature of the world so obvious and completely kills any sense of scale.
There's a reason the only part of wow people are nostalgic for is the vanilla leveling stretch. Once you get flying mounts it obliterates any sense of immersion.
FFXIV doesn't have good scale despite being segmented into zones with a loading screen between them. And flying being an expected thing and designing zones around that will always result in lacklustre zones, unless you attach some sort of mechanical depth to it like in GW2 and DF.
A seamless open-world that you can't easily skip or fly over will almost always be better than small zones with flying.
It also resulted in every zone being the exact same where you unlock half of it with an obnoxious landmass blocking you from the other half until you come back later.
This game is so formulaic it hurts.

Yeah no, new PLD is pretty much objectively better. Only thing that annoys me is having to combine Requiescat with Fight or Flight which does feel like going againt what I've learned before, but everything else is pretty much just a flat out improvement, almost every stupid design choice that made PLD noticeably the worst tank in every single category you can think of got fixed or made better.
My only problem with it currently is that like every other job in the game, it's stuck on the 2-min meta. Besides that it's actually more fun now since it isn't being gimped for being the odd one out anymore and since every 1-2-3 gives a free holy, you actually feel like a spell slinging melee.
What would push current PLD close to perfection for me would be: >Removal of 2-min meta (99% of never happening) >The buff that allows you to cast a free holy after basic combo should also work on Clemency >Give PLD it's 2.0 revive back, make it cost a frickton of MP (lets say 80% max mp) so that you'd only ever want to use it in an emergency and force PLD to waste a requiescat cast on it if you don't want to spend 3 sec casting it

Honestly anon that is the best way to do things, I enjoy the raiding scene and love making groups to help people or just do that content but if you hate it? MSQ only and dipping is a solid choice, Square has been very shoddy, especially in EW with non Savage and Ultimate content. I like Criterion too and Orthos was fun for a small time, but I legit think it's been a boring as frick expansion for anything out of savage and ultimate. Don't pay them money for the dogshit excuse that has been post patch.
I liked them to a point, BA and DRS turn into a discord mod power tripping shitfest, but they aren't bad pieces of content otherwise.
I wanted to like EO but all those insta cast, three room long, insta kill aoe "gotcha" flash attacks were just too much.
PoTD and HoH were fun and enjoyable and me and my friend loved running trough them for items and stuff, with EO we just wanted it to be fricking over with and never set foot inside again.
Orthos has a huge issue on the first 20-30 floors too with how spongy everything is, I personally liked the mechanics but it gets old very quickly so I get you on that, I had way more fun in HoH.
But yeah outside of raiding I'm really just kind of tired with how 14 is at the moment. I have a few more groups I'm probably doing to help some friends clear their last ultimates and maybe a few others with savage, and then during the drought I might just unsub for a bit since there's not too much left to do.

Everything in this storyline would have been absolute kino if they could handle it competently. Zero would be an awesome character if the writers weren't fricking contradicting what she says every two steps. Golbez would have been a kino villain with understandable motivations and a cool style and flair if the writers could actually write a fricking plan that didn't rely on just lucking out hard despite his best attempts otherwise. This whole story in general would have been good if someone just fricking fact checked the writers as they added things. But they didn't and now we've got these two dumbasses that can barely remember what happened between one scene and the next.
Play up the time dilation. It's been forty or so years since the Void collapsed, not hundreds. Azdaja is there willingly because she was so moved by Golbez dedication to his people that blah blah blah. Golbie, as the WoL's shard, tried valiantly to save his world but was just a little too late, then turned into a mindless voidsent as a mirror to what could have happened to us in the First. Durante, as Zenos' shard, is prone to extremism and took the plan up to 11 which is why we're fighting him. Make the Four Fiends more of a mirror to the Scions than an evil group of mustache twirling villains. Make the sidequest that gives you all their backstories fricking mandatory content holy shit, force it on us in echo visions after the boss fights.
Just give us a little complexity beyond "dark man bad", please god just a little. Pandaemonium was good! Why couldn't Hiroi carry that into the much more important MSQ?

There is a party who stick around. The class questlines will give you more overt mentor characters for that specific job but as far as the msq goes it's more of a team of people working together well.

It's definitely noticable when you compare to JP. I won't move back simply because having 19ms ping with no addons is such a nicer experience and I just do casual ultimates with friends these days anyway so the lower player count doesn't really affect me. You'll just need to PF a lot and/or find a good FC
In short, OCE servers were a ploy to get australians off JP servers. They based them in sydney, which meant that SEA players would get about the same ping to there as they do to japan, so why would they move when they already have the JP raiding community? Savvy players caught on and didn't move, but some people were baited into it by lower ping and now the raiding scene over there is fricked.

Started recently as a gladiator and about level 20 and able to go to the other cities. Am I cucking myself switching to a different class like Marauder at this point, or should I at least finish the classes questline? I'm leaving off crafting/gathering classes besides miner and goldsmith so I don't feel overwhelmed.

This is the point where the game lets you off the leash and you can try any starting class. The first 20 levels are a breeze if you stick to the hunting log and do the starter quests in each city. Try them all until you find one you like.
No, it's a slave to the 1 minute buff window and if your gnashing combo drifts for any reason you're fricked. Trying to mitigate during the combo is downright impossible if you can't double weave comfortably and it happens more frequently than you expect it to.

BLM Leylines are "stand in this circle to do more damage" and ontop of being a caster you really want to avoid moving as much as possible. In regards to rotation the fun you find is generally in how you need to optimise and adjust the rotation for a fight. Delaying big cooldowns to align with upcoming downtime and re-engagement along with adjusting to weaving mitigation into a rotation (especially when big damage is coming out during a burst window as a tank) can be fun to adjust to. It kind of a put in as much effort as you want though. Melee DPS are all parsebrained and need to get all their positionals and uptime just right or they pop a blood vessel for example.

FFXIV doesn't have good scale despite being segmented into zones with a loading screen between them. And flying being an expected thing and designing zones around that will always result in lacklustre zones, unless you attach some sort of mechanical depth to it like in GW2 and DF.
A seamless open-world that you can't easily skip or fly over will almost always be better than small zones with flying.
It also resulted in every zone being the exact same where you unlock half of it with an obnoxious landmass blocking you from the other half until you come back later.
This game is so formulaic it hurts.

Yeah no, new PLD is pretty much objectively better. Only thing that annoys me is having to combine Requiescat with Fight or Flight which does feel like going againt what I've learned before, but everything else is pretty much just a flat out improvement, almost every stupid design choice that made PLD noticeably the worst tank in every single category you can think of got fixed or made better.
My only problem with it currently is that like every other job in the game, it's stuck on the 2-min meta. Besides that it's actually more fun now since it isn't being gimped for being the odd one out anymore and since every 1-2-3 gives a free holy, you actually feel like a spell slinging melee.
What would push current PLD close to perfection for me would be:

Honestly anon that is the best way to do things, I enjoy the raiding scene and love making groups to help people or just do that content but if you hate it? MSQ only and dipping is a solid choice, Square has been very shoddy, especially in EW with non Savage and Ultimate content. I like Criterion too and Orthos was fun for a small time, but I legit think it's been a boring as frick expansion for anything out of savage and ultimate. Don't pay them money for the dogshit excuse that has been post patch.
Eureka and Bozja were the only time this game actually felt like an mmo for me.
I liked them to a point, BA and DRS turn into a discord mod power tripping shitfest, but they aren't bad pieces of content otherwise.
Orthos has a huge issue on the first 20-30 floors too with how spongy everything is, I personally liked the mechanics but it gets old very quickly so I get you on that, I had way more fun in HoH.
But yeah outside of raiding I'm really just kind of tired with how 14 is at the moment. Play up the time dilation. It's been forty or so years since the Void collapsed, not hundreds. Azdaja is there willingly because she was so moved by Golbez dedication to his people that blah blah blah. Golbie, as the WoL's shard, tried valiantly to save his world but was just a little too late, then turned into a mindless voidsent as a mirror to what could have happened to us in the First. Durante, as Zenos' shard, is prone to extremism and took the plan up to 11 which is why we're fighting him. Make the Four Fiends more of a mirror to the Scions than an evil group of mustache twirling villains. Make the sidequest that gives you all their backstories fricking mandatory content holy shit, force it on us in echo visions after the boss fights.

I won't move back simply because having 19ms ping with no addons is such a nicer experience and I just do casual ultimates with friends these days anyway so the lower player count doesn't really affect me. You'll just need to PF a lot and/or find a good FC
In short, OCE servers were a ploy to get australians off JP servers. They based them in sydney, which meant that SEA players would get about the same ping to there as they do to japan, so why would they move when they already have the JP raiding community? Savvy players caught on and didn't move, but some people were baited into it by lower ping and now the raiding scene over there is fricked.
Good thing japs are brining JP ONRY back and are viciously vote kicking anyone who doesn't type fluent Japanese.

Started recently as a gladiator and about level 20 and able to go to the other cities. Am I cucking myself switching to a different class like Marauder at this point, or should I at least finish the classes questline? I'm leaving off crafting/gathering classes besides miner and goldsmith so I don't feel overwhelmed.
you should level multiple jobs because you're pretty much guaranteed to over level the MSQ by quite a bit eventually

Depends on what you like, PLD is a flexible tank but I find it to be the most boring tank. Early Paladin especially is boring as frick, but most of the tanks are like that.

pld, which starts at level 30, has the absolute worst questline in the entire game.
Seriously shockingly bad and surprising that it hasn't been remade completely. Pick any other job you want with no worries.
This is the point where the game lets you off the leash and you can try any starting class. The first 20 levels are a breeze if you stick to the hunting log and do the starter quests in each city. Try them all until you find one you like.

No, it's a slave to the 1 minute buff window and if your gnashing combo drifts for any reason you're fricked. Trying to mitigate during the combo is downright impossible if you can't double weave comfortably and it happens more frequently than you expect it to.

BLM has the highest skill ceiling because it's kit has no rotation, just a bunch of building blocks it expects you to build into a monolith.
You could say the same thing about Dark Knight but it just amounts to mash on CD.
Still harder than PLD or WAR though
BLM Leylines are "stand in this circle to do more damage" and ontop of being a caster you really want to avoid moving as much as possible. In regards to rotation the fun you find is generally in how you need to optimise and adjust the rotation for a fight. Delaying big cooldowns to align with upcoming downtime and re-engagement along with adjusting to weaving mitigation into a rotation (especially when big damage is coming out during a burst window as a tank) can be fun to adjust to. It kind of a put in as much effort as you want though. Melee DPS are all parsebrained and need to get all their positionals and uptime just right or they pop a blood vessel for example.
