make it a dating app for nerds in disguise
    ban public ERPing
    encourage private ERPing
    cheap monetization, no whale options
fun and varied dress up options for both male and female characters
allow you to access it on mobile, but maybe not all of the gameplay so you could do dailies or whatever on the train, but you wouldnt be expected to design around/play with phone gamers in harder content

Nothing specific, but if devs started pumping out MMOs left and right again like they were in the 2000s then you might see a revival of interest. Beyond that the genre is on it's way out, game releases are less than once a year and they flop almost every single time if they aren't outright cancelled mid development or a money laundering scheme that never leaves development.

lower graphics intentionally. Go with the early 2000's platformer style (this allows the game to fit a lot of players on the same map without much problems with connection)
heavy PK centered and heavy on training to get to the highest level (there is no highest level)
the combat in PK requires skill to be the best (it has parries, blocks, dashes, potions that speed up players and slow down players, disable their mana etc stuff like that, and ability to spawn npcs and have them target specific players)
    no raids
community centric game, there is an incentive to actually talk to people in the game. there is no open mic, you type to people but mics work in party chat. there is a global chat. there are no other servers to connect to, there is one big server for each region

modern gamers are either carebears who want zero forced pvp or psychopaths who take forced pvp to another level, literally no inbetween. you must understand that people who play video games today are severely mentally ill in comparison to the first few million people to ever play mmos

Of course it can, but devs are too frickin moronic and tone deaf to ever figure out how to do that. Imagine.

Plus you have to consider that the devs almost always give into the pve only cancerous dipshits who want to play stardew valley in an mmo centered around pvp and pvp/guild/alliance related politics, instead of just going away and playing stardew valley.

Only in matchmaking. Spontaneous world pvp just ends up like tarkov.

            Anonymous

that's right. in random worldpvp engagements you have players with totally different goals and character strength, which might sound like a fun source of variance but ends up being extremely one-sided and unfun because no matter who you are there are 2 people who can waste your time and grief you, and getting griefed is more unfun than griefing for the 99% of players who aren't mentally stunted psychopaths
when all players involved are there to pvp it can be good

because you grind if you want to be on the leaderboards. if the game is good enough people will do this, not everyone, but those interested. ideally you do whatever you want to do in the game and if grinding/being on the leaderboards isnt for you then youd just do one of the other many fun things in the game.

needs to be a legit second life simulator but in a fantasy or scifi world. players can do daily jobs to gain experience and money mostly by acquiring stuff to trade, nothing unheard of but theres a lot of gold you can take from WoW like how great it was before you could fly everywhere

MMORPGs need regular server resets because new players don't want to be years behind and veterans run out of stuff to do.
Make a MMORPG that has a lot of replayability and is designed around a three month lifecycle (after which your progress is wiped and everyone gets to be lvl 1 again).
Something similar to Foxhole or VRising.

modern maplestory gameplay sucks dick though. it's just visual vomit, every class shits out an insane amount of lines, moves fast as frick, and no real class identity besides skill effects. every map is just flat platforms and the art style was pixarified

That's why I said it's 2007, old maple, like back in the day, where you can just sit in public lobbies and talk to random strangers on the internet, and spam J>PQ@@@ for KPQ and then get party kicked because you looted the slime boots even though it wasn't your turn.

you knows what kills every mmo? discord.
I joined a lineage 2 server some weeks ago, joined a clan, and the first thing the leader says is "yo, join add me on discord and join our voice chat"
I don't want to voice chat with a bunch of edgy doomers living at their parents basements. I want to chat using the chat function in-game and make the world feel alive. The only messages I saw in trade chat were clans taunitng eachother over pvp.
Discord killed the mmo's social aspect

I don't think a 1:1 copy of old school maple would work, old maple had a lot of fundamental problems with gearing, exp curve and class balance. 4th job was implemented in a really dogshit way with most classes being utter shit and you end up with a mage meta for grinding and NL/Hero for bossing.

We see how every old school private server goes, it's magestory where you get to 120 on a mage or dk and spam FMA at skeles for the rest of your life while selling leech and leeching alt buff mules and a night lord for bossing. PipMS is basically the closest maple will ever get being true to it's original spirit and it's being made by one troony who will cave to a DMCA the moment the server launches, if it ever does. If nexon announced 2007 maple tomorrow I truly believe it would die in a month, they're not smart enough to iron out the bad parts.

Old maple is way more salvageable than modern maple and really any MMO on the market but it needs too much elbow grease to be as great as the original devs wanted it to be. It needs a team and someone with a soul at the head, and you can't get that from people who host servers in countries where DMCA laws don't apply. Maple is basically doomed regardless. I think Ragnarok and Mabinogi might be a lot like this but I didn't play it at all. Old korean mmos have some serious brilliance to them but fricked up way too much along the way.

Me personally, I think we're already there with the fact that people can host their own local servers for old versions of the game that are almost pre-built outside of SQL non-sense. I was looking into streamlining the scrolling process on my personal v83 server by making tiered stimulators out of etc drops and scroll fragments that would also drop from mobs, usually for 100% scrolls that offered a nice chunk of decent stats so the pre-planned long term gearing process was beneficial, while also keeping the low chance scrolls a thing and making clean slate scrolls, and chaos scrolls a rare random drop.

I dunno, I like the idea that the game functions correctly, but the balance sucks dick because Nexon likes making you roll the dice with your wallet and hp wash on anything that isn't just a dk.

Oh, and bottled class buffs you can craft.

              >we're already there
You'd think so, but private servers haven't played out that way. Cash grab clone after clone, every server that wasn't a cashgrab has died and the only ones left are magestory servers. Game needs a total rework of class ideology from 3rd job on, even 2nd job was really bad, and old maple was terrible about things like skill builds and AP allocation. A lot of pservers tried to fix this but were either cashgrabs or got raped by daizunda.
              >bottled class buffs you can craft.
That's pretty much what potential was, but we all know how p2w that was when they introduced cubes. Even then craftable class buffs just makes certain classes useless like how unique:SI made buccs worthless boss runs.

                Anonymous

Potential literally ruined the game, and it wasn't because it added hyper skills or only accessible to people who paid for cubes, it's because it was the first step in stat bloat that pretty much shat on the entirety of the game thereon.

                Anonymous

Yeah true but I think the problem really started with white scrolls, chaos scrolls and the scrolling system in general. White scrolls were op as frick and only came from gach and chaos scrolls were an even bigger layer of rng on top of an already rng heavy system. Shit like that makes the game ripe for botters, rmters and whales where they can just slam botted/duped scrolls together and pray for consecutive +5 att rolls on gloves, pac or facestompers then dupe the perfect results. Even without the dupes the system still favors mass botters. 4th job also ruined the game imo

The game is just better off being made a locally hosted server based game, that acts like an mmo, like PSO.
