I'm tired of the remakes, to be honest. And we've hit the point where there's not much of a point in remaking 5 and 6 because those games aren't that old and still play fine today. Not to mention remakes will always be a mimicry of the original and if you try to deviate too far then you go into "reimagining" territory where the purists won't like how different it is.

Personally, I was excited for a remake of RE1 and RE2 just for the sake of modern graphics upgrades. I was satisfied with that. They kept going and they didn't need to. They're doing it for money. No one else I know has been that crazy or obsessed for the rest of it (unless they're RE4 fanboys but still it wasn't necessary).
I'd like them to come up with a new story with the concepts and move away from familiar characters just like they did with RE7.
The older games are awesome. They'll always be there to go back to, and it's cool to see modern takes on those classics. So far it's been more misses than hits in my opinion (3 and 4 Remakes were meh) but RE2 Remake was my personal 2019 GOTY that I still go back to. It would be neat to see what they'd do with something like Code Veronica or RE0, but I know those aren't going to happen.
They tried making new shit, turns out they're terrible at it and are at their best when doing the remakes. Village was just a shitty knockoff of RE4, and the RE4 Remake ended up being way better than Village.

They're scared to move forward because with each passing year within universe Chris, Jill and everyone else introduced in RE1 & 2 (sans Sherry) are getting close to their 50s (hell if RE8 does take place in the 2020's then Chris is already 50). The only young blood they got is Sherry, Jake and Rosemary.
They're too narrow minded because they want the brand recognition that Chris, Jill, Leon and the like carry. The series has a ton of original characters that they forget about that they can still use, especially when some of them are actively on duty for their occupation. They killed off Ethan in Village but it's fine because he was made to be first person only and there's only so much that you can do with him. Plus you have Rose or Mia to replace him if needed.

Village ended on a cliffhanger so it's suggested that the next game will involve fighting the BSAA. That will probably be the same year or a couple into the future. So we'll probably still have Chris around in the game and hopefully Jill.

in a sense, yeah. the rest of chris (who was named beam at this stage) and jill's team was this guy named gelzer and a comic relief black guy named dewey. barry and rebecca were created to take their roles as the major supporting characters.
Capcom are awful at writing new characters and especially new protagonists. Even passable characters like Nero or Ethan get overshadowed by the old characters in their respective games, those being Dante/Vergil and Chris. It all boils down to the same thing. No one trusts Capcom to write new stories. Even their best new stuff is just subtle retellings of old stories, DMCV and RE8 take so many notes from DMC3 and RE4 it's unreal.
It was RE2 that started all of that. It wasn't enough to have a new character like Elza Walker, we had to have Claire Redfield because it's Chris's sister. We had to have the RPD in Racoon City where the STARS were stationed. We had to have references to RE1.
If RE2 just went the same way as Silent Hill 2, we would've gotten a better RE universe.

I think they can do some good work. Take Battle Network and Starforce. In BN we follow the story of two brothers separated at birth, but still overcoming that obstacle to be the heroes the world needs. And then YEARS later in Starforce we follow the growth of Geo and Omega-Xis, two completely different beings who only saw one another as a means to an end (more Omega than Geo) but work their problems out (with stumbles along the way) to becoming one big family with Geo's mom and returning Dad.

Why is a sequel reincorporating aspects of the first game bad?
Resident Evil should've never had a narrative that extends across multiple entries. It was fine to recycle some generic narrative components of the first game's story, but hamfisting explicit references into the game has made the franchise's canon a huge jumbled mess and treats the characters like capeshit heroes. It was fine to use minor references to older games sparingly, but still far important to create new narratives and new characters so the series doesn't feel stale. RE2 could've been just as good without the pointless connection between Claire and Chris. It was something done for fanservice rather than any good reason, Capcom just love to crowdsource their games for some reason. The creative focus should've been on making the series refreshing rather than repetitive.
The franchise was as at its all time low between RE5-RE6 for this very reason. RE6 was basically fanservice: the game. RE7 and RE8 did a good job at reversing that, even if they still hamfisted old characters like Chris into the story for nostalgia points.
I've seen it brought up in Parasite Eve threads that PE2 is based on a very early draft for a Resident Evil sequel written before a bunch of the RE staff left Capcom for Square. Supposedly it was going to be about a different branch of STARS investigating monster attacks in a small desert town that would eventually be traced back to an old government base in the mountains. That idea got kind of clumsily welded to the Parasite Eve material and PE2 is the result. I can believe it because the game is really inconsistent with the opening act in the high rise feeling like an actual follow up to the urban horror setting of the first game before it takes a sharp turn into RE territory.

I imagine they cut it because they wanted "ethan's story" to be completely self-contained. Chris even showing up is literally just clean-up to make sure that they don't HAVE TO keep it its own thing if they don't want to later, but to also confirm it's canon to the rest.
But I've read that RE7 and 8 are supposed to be entirely self-contained and not the basis for anything going on in 9 or further.
