The character and enemy designs are unique even by today's standards. There's lots of fun secrets and hidden things to do. The writing is cute and charming. The battle system is not challenging at all but everything else that's important for an RPG is there in spades. You could do worse
Pretty much everything about it works well together. The mix of familiar Mario things with bizarre new things, the music, the unique graphical style, the gameplay (as somebody who isn't a big RPG fan, the map movement and timed hits did a lot to make the game more engaging), the obscure secrets, plus the always silly plot which is constantly shoving you into bizarre, unexpected scenarios, all of which somehow flow together quite well.
I just wish they'd made a direct sequel. Paper Mario and M&L are great, sure, but of course they're just inspired by some of the conventions established by SMRPG and don't really capture the same feeling.
Lots of reasons. One thing I like about it is that it's a very breezy game. You can beat it in a weekend which isn't something you can say about most RPGs.
I remember it feeling very "meta" for the time. Mario is a celebrity in that world and the npcs are always asking you to prove who you are by jumping. Plus there's stuff like the 8-bit Mario in Booster's Tower.
In the context of it's release, it feels like the culmination of everything the SNES was leading up to. It has Mario, it's an RPG, which was really the breakout genre on the platform, it's a collaboration with Square whose output on the SNES was outstanding, it has fancy pre-rendered graphics which were impressive at the time and helped the SNES punch above it's weight.
The N64 would be out in a few short months after this. Super Mario RPG heralded the end of the SNES era of Nintendo and that wasn't lost on me, even as a kid.
It blows my mind that the remake exists at all. While it made the main game even easier, I did like some of the changes they made to the battle system - some of the post-game battles made decent use of them, at least
well seeing how bawd she was is kinda a normal reaction.
i laughed when i was playing the japanese version and peach said >This almost marriage experience made me curious..... >who should i marry..... just curiosity
It's just so damn goofy and authentic. While it breaks the 4th wall, it also breaks it earnestly and there's not a lot of cynicism in it. I don't know how someone can play the game and not feel at least somewhat delighted.
It's like a puppy. You don't look at a puppy and think "what a basic b***h, he can't even tear out a man's throat." You look at the puppy and you go "aww, look at this puppy" and then you get down on your hands and knees with it debase yourself for its amusement. Like a prostitute. A filthy, disgusting prostitute.
Despite what a lot of internet autists will tell you, there is more to a game than pure functional gameplay. That's usually the most important ingredient, but it's not the whole dish. If the general vibe from the music, visuals, ideas and world and story, and yes the gameplay as well, if all that comes together to create an experience that puts you in a good mood then you'll be happy with the game.
Nerds miss the forest for the trees a lot by hyper analyzing everything. Don't forget about admiring the big picture.
I honestly never liked Mario RPG. It always felt like a dumbed down Final Fantasy, but with Mario characters, while the later Mario RPGs (like Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi) actually did their own thing.

Map movement I like, timed hits I don't. Too simplistic, like a cheap carnival game.

I just beat the remake on Nintendo Switch and thought it was good. I wonder if I will like Paper Mario at the end of the month.

The N64 Paper Mario is better than the one they're remaking
The N64 game is slow as hell
>Naughty dress

I don't like the cloud people
that's racist
That anon is probably lightning. lightning and cloud are from two very different video games so the racism is understandable
When are we getting a FF character named "Fog"
