Its just unregulated capitalism at work. At this point only two things drive upper level decision making processes. Getting ahead of the next popular thing and pandering to the greatest number of possible consumers. Since most popular things are already popular to start with or are completely unexpected its almost impossible for corporations to be the at the forefront. Its pure luck no mater how hard they try so they have to rely heavily on the second option. The problem with that is that reality is counter intuitive because they have to assume that 1. Every possible consumer has the disposable income to spend on their product and 2. that they even want to buy the product in the first place. But they assume those things anyways and look at pure numbers. Women are 50% of the population so if they do not pander to them they assume that they are eliminating 50% of the population as possible consumers. Continue this logic for other demographics. If simple pandering workers they would be rich but the biggest problems is that many demographics are alienated by things other demographics want. So they pander to the numbers which do not want to buy their product and then alienate the demographics most likely to buy their product. Anyone in the industry can figure this out which is why small studios and indies do fine. All the big studies are controlled by people outside the industry that only look at the numbers and use logic that simply does not work.

Of course. Most companies want to make money and as soon as the investors come knocking most agree and cash out or think that things will be fine since they were "promised" control and self determination. Look at what happened to the Disco Elysium devs. They will end up as the big studios do. But there is still a solid number of small studios and indies that are going strong and make their millions in their own corners.
Every single successful business needs to know and understand who their target group is. When did the game industry start to believe they were the exception from this?
Its not so much that they think they are the exception as that the industry is much more reliant on direct sales which is why they push micro-transactions and every other scummy thing they can. Movies and TV and other big media went through the same process but were much more resilient. If something did not break big right off the bat you had merch sales and ads. Being non interactive and needing small time investments helped with this as well. Disliking a 2 hour movie that effectively cost them 5usd to consume is a lot easier to forgive from consumers than a 60usd game that takes 20 hours to finish. Even still you see things like Star Wars missing expected returns all the time. Its just not as devastating to the company.

Shareholders only became a problem when they learned that government bail outs can be counted on. If the government will bail them out then they don't have to control their risk anymore. They can simply throw money at whatever and no longer have to inform themselves about what they are investing in.

They view the lost potential revenue as acceptable and are even so arrogant as to think that by denying their products to certain markets consumers will rise up and force their governments to become more corporate friendly.

ok. they don't want to sell stuff there but what's preventing them from allowing people to register. there are countless sites on the internet where you can register but aren't allowed to use service or buy products because country is not supported. heck I can't buy half the stuff on ebay because no shipping options. and on xbox I was able to make account looong before they made gamepass available in my country and that's only PC version without xcloud access.
Read Playstation's terms of service and you'll realize it binds you to tens of thousands of entities, among which advertizing and music licensing, which prevents watching PSN ads in some countries. That's one of hundreds of reasons, but basically they're bound by so many layers of contracts and laws that they're technically taking a risk to release their content in some European countries where part of these terms and agreements would not be applicable.

Getting ahead of the next popular thing and pandering to the greatest number of possible consumers. Since most popular things are already popular to start with or are completely unexpected its almost impossible for corporations to be the at the forefront. Its pure luck no mater how hard they try so they have to rely heavily on the second option. The problem with that is that reality is counter intuitive because they have to assume that 1. Every possible consumer has the disposable income to spend on their product and 2. that they even want to buy the product in the first place. But they assume those things anyways and look at pure numbers. Women are 50% of the population so if they do not pander to them they assume that they are eliminating 50% of the population as possible consumers. Continue this logic for other demographics. If simple pandering workers they would be rich but the biggest problems is that many demographics are alienated by things other demographics want. So they pander to the numbers which do not want to buy their product and then alienate the demographics most likely to buy their product. Anyone in the industry can figure this out which is why small studios and indies do fine. All the big studies are controlled by people outside the industry that only look at the numbers and use logic that simply does not work.

Most companies want to make money and as soon as the investors come knocking most agree and cash out or think that things will be fine since they were "promised" control and self determination. Look at what happened to the Disco Elysium devs. They will end up as the big studios do. But there is still a solid number of small studios and indies that are going strong and make their millions in their own corners.
Its not so much that they think they are the exception as that the industry is much more reliant on direct sales which is why they push micro-transactions and every other scummy thing they can. Movies and TV and other big media went through the same process but were much more resilient. If something did not break big right off the bat you had merch sales and ads. Being non interactive and needing small time investments helped with this as well. Disliking a 2 hour movie that effectively cost them 5usd to consume is a lot easier to forgive from consumers than a 60usd game that takes 20 hours to finish. Even still you see things like Star Wars missing expected returns all the time. Its just not as devastating to the company.

Its not the corporations but their investors and controllers that do things like this. They want their money as controlled and as untaxed as possible. Its why you often see weird outlier countries that are not supported. If you look at their tax laws the corporations cant do their normal tax dodging or have to give up information that other countries can then use for their own enforcement. They view the lost potential revenue as acceptable and are even so arrogant as to think that by denying their products to certain markets consumers will rise up and force their governments to become more corporate friendly.
