OpenRPG is kind of basic but has been around for a long ass time.
Vassal is surprisingly useful.
Maptool has consistently been on the cutting edge of what the software can do, but the fact they require GMs to know java if they want to make custom macros really hurts them.

Open source guarantees fuck all in terms of security nowadays, unless the project is quite popular: just look at minecraft, there's been hundreds of scandals due to devs getting caught sneaking in malicious code, and it still keeps happening.
Worse still, the echo-chamber transformation of modern internet means that malicious code gets """reintepreted""" as social activism or whatever, even Mozilla got away with it on multiple occasions.
