Yes, it's pretty much like VII that you see the healed world afterwards. But people are so stupid that wanted to see the blight being healed somehow, with missing the entire point that the crystals were not a blessing but the main root of the problems. The whole Cid arc is spent to tell you that. The whole resolve of the story is to get rid of the crystal to solve everything. But then you have Ultima that is your generic ayyy lmaooo that was waiting for someone like Clive that was able to control all eikons by his own so he could go and be the ultimate being. It's so simple. Annabelle killing herself for example, it's another embodiment that she just realised that she wasn't the puppet master, but she was also a puppet herself.

Pacing issues. I'm 6 hours in, it's great, but there are some parts of the story that could be cut or toned down for pacing and brevity. The game feels very indulgent at parts. But when it soars, it's amazing, best of the franchise. Also some of the presentation choices are disheartening, like having an epic battle with heartlifting music abruptly cut short by a HEY HERE'S ALL YOUR SPOILS CONGRATS IT'S ALL WORTHLESS screen. Solid 8/10, 10/10 if it trimmed the fetch quest fat.
Final Fantasy games used to have a sense of scale and adventure that hasn't been replicated in the series ever again, even when those are actually very small by today standards.
Slowly gathering a party of friends/warriors to
eventually traverse the continents on your ship and find cool side stuff along the way, visting new towns and such. The story taking its time to unfold instead of going all out in the first two hours, with bits carefully scattered. These are things we gave for granted, yet they've been stripped completely or have been overly simplified in newer installments.
Back then, even the weakest FF entry was at least a memorable experience.
This. I didn't play any FF aside from X, but I did play other RPGs like Legend of Mana and Tales of and the big draw of those were the simple premise. Starting off in a small village, taking on a quest that pushes you into the world, meeting new companions, and discovering shit. I remember being absolutely floored as a kid when playing Tales of Eternia since there was constantly new shit to discover. First it was the overworld, then a completely new overworld, then under the ocean in both overworlds, then an entirely new sky area. There were secret optional areas and sidequests in each case and the game felt like it never ended. But by the end I could only look back on it as an epic adventure.
New games just don't capture this feel anymore even if I was still a kid. Like for frick's sake all the vidoes I'm seeing of FF16 are just hallways followed by arenas for bosses. Once you look past the spectacle of the HD particle effects, you realize just how shallow it is for an RPG.

It's the best sentence to describe what this game is and isn't. The cinematic quality, the direction, the voice acting, the beautiful score, the sheer spectacle of everything this game has to offer in its story component is seriously one of the highest highs this industry has achieved, paralleled only by the games like GoW Ragnarok.
And on the other side, the game feels like a deathbed song of the FF franchise as we always knew it. The RPGs components are stripped to their minimum, so much so that they feel like an after-thought, there just to fill a checkbox that the games prior always put as a prerogative (yes, even XV, even if it fails and falls flat when trying to do so). Player expression and discovery is chopped down to achieve the game grand scope, and the side quests have sadly fallen back into the quantity over quality approach that the we thought we were beginning to leave behind with FF7R.
It's called Final Fantasy, it IS Final Fantasy.
When the game achieves its peaks, it's the most Final Fantasy we ever got in 15 years. But at the same time it constantly tries to be a different game. It tries, and it tries too hard. That's why it's a beautiful, incredible game that feels like a friend with whom you've fallen out touch many years ago. Even if you still talk to him from time to time, even if you respect him for what he is now, there's a part inside of you that wants that friend back, and have fun like in your childhood, but that friend isn't there anymore, he's grown into a different person. And you're here, not there. You will never be.

Uh, no...? Final Fantasy has always had action combat. FF hasn't been turn-based in over 20 years. ATB is action combat. Also, it's made by Yoshida, so it's very Final Fantasy. It has all the classics like chocobo and moogles, but without all the racist discrimination of being a JRPG. It's what Final Fantasy always was, it's just more of the same, except better because it doesn't have the squinty-eyed stereotypes of being turn-based.

But it already is. We all agree that FF16 is a good game because it makes Barry mad. It has the best combat (RPGs suck), the best characters (Clive is a real man just like me), and it has sex which is good because we're adults. This is like complaining that the Bow and Arrow in Minecraft isnt as snappy as guns in CoD or Fortnite, the main appeal to BoTW/ToTk has always been the world and how it was adapted to player freedom. Obviously, no game is perfect but I have no major complaints. It's definitely 9/10 at least. The nitpicks are ridiculous from what I've seen.

Yeah I'd agree with this so far. I'm nowhere near as far into it as you I'd imagine since I had work today but I have no real major complaints so far and everything it does ranges from good to incredible. I think this might overtake RE4R as my current GOTY if it keeps up this quality. I hear people say the ending is shit but I've liked plenty of endings that people said are shit before and hated plenty of endings people have hates so we'll see where I stand on that one when I get to it.
Best FF will always differ but I imagine 6, 7, 9, 10, and Tactics (if spin-offs are allowed) dominate the top 3 spots while 2, 13 (and it's sequels), and 15 are usually among the lowest ranked.
It may fall short in some respects, but it should be celebrated for its most stunning moments and the characters who embody them. FFXVI succeeds and earns its place within the Final Fantasy pantheon as one of the great entries, and does so on its own terms.

They fixed the hallway simulator problem by making the combat fun. I've played like 10 hours so far, and my favorite part of the game so far is the temple where you're just going room to room fighting enemies and bosses.
The games combat actually gets better over time as you unlock more Eikon's.
Also a lot of the bosses are really fun to fight. Well telegraphed moves with a lot of options on how to deal with them.
I've not seen that much "vulgar" stuff used just for the sake of using vulgar stuff so this kinda just sounds like you're saying "mommy won't buy me the game because there's blood in it"

Final Fantasy isn't just a single game series. Every entry is different. It really boils down to personal preference. Some people might like vast open worlds of PS1 era games, some people might prefer linearity of PS2 and PS3 era etc.

But people are so stupid that wanted to see the blight being healed somehow, with missing the entire point that the crystals were not a blessing but the main root of the problems. Pacing issues. I'm 6 hours in, it's great, but there are some parts of the story that could be cut or toned down for pacing and brevity. The game feels very indulgent at parts. But when it soars, it's amazing, best of the franchise. Also some of the presentation choices are disheartening, like having an epic battle with heartlifting music abruptly cut short by a HEY HERE'S ALL YOUR SPOILS CONGRATS IT'S ALL WORTHLESS screen. Solid 8/10, 10/10 if it trimmed the fetch quest fat.

eventually traverse the continents on your ship and find cool side stuff along the way, visting new towns and such. The story taking its time to unfold instead of going all out in the first two hours, with bits carefully scattered. These are things we gave for granted, yet they've been stripped completely or have been overly simplified in newer installments.
Back then, even the weakest FF entry was at least a memorable experience.
This. I didn't play any FF aside from X, but I did play other RPGs like Legend of Mana and Tales of and the big draw of those were the simple premise. Starting off in a small village, taking on a quest that pushes you into the world, meeting new companions, and discovering shit. I remember being absolutely floored as a kid when playing Tales of Eternia since there was constantly new shit to discover. First it was the overworld, then a completely new overworld, then under the ocean in both overworlds, then an entirely new sky area. There were secret optional areas and sidequests in each case and the game felt like it never ended. But by the end I could only look back on it as an epic adventure.
New games just don't capture this feel anymore even if I was still a kid. Like for frick's sake all the vidoes I'm seeing of FF16 are just hallways followed by arenas for bosses. Once you look past the spectacle of the HD particle effects, you realize just how shallow it is for an RPG.

It's the best sentence to describe what this game is and isn't. The cinematic quality, the direction, the voice acting, the beautiful score, the sheer spectacle of everything this game has to offer in its story component is seriously one of the highest highs this industry has achieved, paralleled only by the games like GoW Ragnarok.
And on the other side, the game feels like a deathbed song of the FF franchise as we always knew it. The RPGs components are stripped to their minimum, so much so that they feel like an after-thought, there just to fill a checkbox that the games prior always put as a prerogative (yes, even XV, even if it fails and falls flat when trying to do so). Player expression and discovery is chopped down to achieve the game grand scope, and the side quests have sadly fallen back into the quantity over quality approach that the we thought we were beginning to leave behind with FF7R.
It's called Final Fantasy, it IS Final Fantasy.
When the game achieves its peaks, it's the most Final Fantasy we ever got in 15 years. But at the same time it constantly tries to be a different game. It tries, and it tries too hard. That's why it's a beautiful, incredible game that feels like a friend with whom you've fallen out touch many years ago. Even if you still talk to him from time to time, even if you respect him for what he is now, there's a part inside of you that wants that friend back, and have fun like in your childhood, but that friend isn't there anymore, he's grown into a different person. And you're here, not there. You will never be.

i complimented GoW cinematic direction and story, obv the game has other problems. Like every game, there's no "it's perfect" or "it's disgusting", no black or white, it's always a spectrum, and you need to carefully tread in that gray zone where everything is complicated. I think GoW Ragnarok is a good point of comparison. My question: who would play both GOWR and FFXVI and think XVI was superior? Gameplay I maybe could see an argument...but for me it's a more jumbled and chaotic experience than the more balanced experience in GOW.

Obviously, no game is perfect but I have no major complaints. It's definitely 9/10 at least. The nitpicks are ridiculous from what I've seen.

Yeah I'd agree with this so far. I'm nowhere near as far into it as you I'd imagine since I had work today but I have no real major complaints so far and everything it does ranges from good to incredible. I think this might overtake RE4R as my current GOTY if it keeps up this quality. I hear people say the ending is shit but I've liked plenty of endings that people said are shit before and hated plenty of endings people have hates so we'll see where I stand on that one when I get to it.

ff16 is in the golden rank of ff games. Would rate it below 9 and 6 but higher then 12, 10, 7 (not counting 14, since its one of my favorites game). So yes it is probably as the reviewers said, the best ff in 2 decades.

They fixed the hallway simulator problem by making the combat fun. I've played like 10 hours so far, and my favorite part of the game so far is the temple where you're just going room to room fighting enemies and bosses.
Its the wrong genre. Not even an RPG. Just a DMC clone. May as well give it a different name at this point.
What's so great about this game? Watching someone stream this and it's been 40 mins of him spamming one attack and hitting dodge.

The games combat actually gets better over time as you unlock more Eikon's.
Also a lot of the bosses are really fun to fight. Well telegraphed moves with a lot of options on how to deal with them.

Honestly, I don't get this too. The normal enemies hits like a fricking truck and shaves off 20-30% health per hit. Haven't gotten to Benedikta yet but I have a feeling she'll have new moves and mechanics.
Normal enemies hit stun super easy though, a stinger while charging fireball pops them leading to curahzee aerial raves while chumps look up and gawk at their healer getting smoking sexy styled
Also Final Fantasy mode buffed up normal enemies health so you can go CUHRAYZEEE on them.
Normal mode kills them way too fast, NG+ difficulty is just perfect. Enemy hits hard and tanky enough to get CUHRAYZEEEE'd
