Action RTS Collectathons with cute creatures in a still grounded setting where you're tasked with managing your time and resources as efficiently as possible. The combat is simplistic but still entertaining and the collection aspect of these games just does something for my ape brain. If that appeals to you it's worth trying. You can start with Pikmin 4 and work backwards since it's pretty self-contained and it's the best game in the series but they're all worth playing if you end up liking it. There's also a demo you can try before you drop money on it that gives you a good idea of what the game is like.

I'd argue 2 is the easiest because you have to gimp yourself to not steamroll everything. 3 I think does the best job not only teaching the player functions of the game, but also heavily encourages efficiency more than the others, with not only the main story having your scoreboard, but Mission Mode also testing your efficiency in multiple different ways, and the Side Stories in 3DX giving some more lore, on top of new challenges on figuring things out, like Bomb Rock management.
I only played 2, but:
>explore and collect giant household items
>grinding has a time limit
>organize specialized zerglings to do specific tasks easier
>fight wild animals that actually behave like wild animals instead of reskinned enemies
>pikmin don't rely on hp and only avoid death through proper playing
They're fun and the stranded in space atmosphere is strong.
this game has annoying parts (bloated with crew dialog/interactions at the start, nighttime segments are pretty boring) but it really transcended all that and became one of my favorites. I can recognize now that a big problem with all other pikmin games is that they're all too short. I thought maybe that was an inevitability of the format or that the formula would get old if it was longer but 4 has a respectable amount of content and its fun the whole way through. If anything it keeps getting more fun as you keep playing. Theres an extra thing they add in postgame that was mindblowingly cool and fun.

Pikmin games are designed to be short because at their core, theyre designed to be played as fast as possible. Then you can compete with yourself and get faster times, less deaths, etc. The shift from the first 3 to 4 was a bit whiplashy at first, but the length is great. the only problem now is the lack of easy replayability. I'm trying to looking to mods for 4, but I cant get emulators to work.

No, they didnt. Pikmin always performs horribly in the US, most of 4's sales were from Japan. Hell, most of the franchise's sales were from Japan.
