It was actually already a mechanic, it just used to do bonus damage instead. It was also really fricking hard to do, either 1 or 3 frame windows. Not sure if it still does the extra damage, or just the AoE.

It couldn't be done today, not with Square and definitely not Nintendo. It's such an influential game that Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi took cues and gave nods to it up to 2007.

The level up system is good and it has great music. Like the Paper Marios it also doesn't require you to grind.

I know I am gong to regret it, but you can pick extra bonuses to customize your character instead of just regular level ups in every level up. So you can go for full attack, full magic or full tank with hp. Also there is the possibility to only pick the strongest bonus stats and make a balanced character too, since they have more sometimes in hp, for example. it will be 4 points instead of 3.

It's the only Mario RPG that really leans into the platforming but in a way that's optional if you want to play it more like an RPG, kind of like Chrono Trigger is a maze game depending on if you avoid encounters. Paper is more of a light adventure game with partner abilities, M&L are more like navigational Zelda puzzles with Bros abilities. In SMRPG areas are more like courses with clear routes for platforming around enemies with some switch hunting mixed in. PM and M&L have their own identities as games that subvert the RPG genre using Mario, SMRPG is just Mario if he RPG
The appeal of the original is:
The music
The more traditional Square RPG mechanics
The use of more traditional Mario theming/Mushroom Kingdom
The "quirky" humor
Three of those are good. Paper Mario 1 + 2 are also good, but have a very different tone. The Mario&Luigi games aren't even trying to be like the others and take the "quirky" humor to eleven.
