You're not going to do anything CUDA-related on your laptop. Literally nobody does that. You do all of that on the server.

i5 or i7 4th generation or newer. This is key because the processors have microcode for things like youtube. Go for the enterprise grade thats 3-5 years old as this is the device lifecycle of many it departments. HP minis are good value, get a barebones i5 6600s and chuck an ssd in there. Also have support for nvme drives. If you want new, thoses zen 2 laptops are pretty slick

I bought a display stock Lenovo for ~$550USD. Has been unreal, in terms of processing speed, although it only has usb-c so I had to buy a dongle for hdmi, and the ssd was only 250GB.

thinkpad e14 g3 is pretty good. its small and lightweight you never really hear the fan and get decent battery life from it. Only think I hate is how hot it gets in summer and that if you compile something with -j6 you only get 2h battery life.

                pretty much kek
if I wanna do more resource-intensive stuff I can just use my desktop anyway, but to be fair 99% of the stuff I do runs perfectly fine on my laptop. my reason to get another one wouldn't be a lack of power but rather wanting something that suits my needs more, for example an all-AMD laptop since I'm running Linux
in the end though, my little i5 9300H with its RTX 2060M are having no issues. I'm planning on upgrading its RAM from 16 to 32 but even that is unnecessary because I learned about zram recently and holy shit that crap is good

If you're compiling remotely: any old thinkpad, don't spend more than $200, yes they can fricking play youtube if you buy something newer than a core2duo or something
If you're compiling locally: one of the newer AMD thinkpads (proper zen CPUs are vastly better than estrogen cores for multi-core compilation workloads, so don't buy the intel ones)
If you don't mind macOS and have the money: a macbook unironically, too bad they're locked to a single unconfigurable OS so if you don't automatically like all of its defaults then it's basically not an option for you

Get the cheapest model with a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port so that when you get some money together for gaming you can upgrade with an external GPU enclosure. That’s what I would do.

Billions of people play games. Fricking UNIX itself was invented because Thompson wanted to run his favorite game without mainframe timesharing costs. While RPGs were written on early BSDs.

I feel like we should already have laptops that are always cool to the touch, fan-less, and have over 24hour battery lifes. Why aren't there laptops like this?

      Anonymous

      they are called macbook pro

      Anonymous

      They are called Pinebook Pro
And they suck, yes tiny single-board computers like this are very impressive for their size these days but you're still basically getting performance from 10 years ago compared to real laptops. Also the most powerful ones still make a lot of heat and will either require a fan or throttle in your face.

Other than Pinebooks, the closest thing might also unironically be a phone, connected up to an external display and keyboard, and a couple of power banks. You might unironically be able to Black person-rig something like that together with a USB-C dock, some off the shelf laptop keyboard and display, and maybe some 3D printed parts for an enclosure, or maybe gutting an ancient thinkpad or something like that.
