I have recently been replaying all the Pokemon games, and I've been trying to decide which one is the best Pokemon game of all time. And now I'm convinced that it's Platinum. Platinum is indeed the peak of Pokemon, with HGSS being a very close second.
Platinum just has everything you need in Pokemon: a Battle Frontier, Contests, Seals, Secret Bases, the Underground, the best Champion (Cynthia), cool locations like the Distortion World, etc... And Sinnoh in general is just the best region. It's such an exciting region to explore, with varied biomes and landscapes, etc. So after years of changing my opinion, I've reached the conclusion that Gen 4 is the peak, with Platinum in particular being the peak of the peak.
Sure, Platinum is not perfect. There ARE indeed too many HMs. And "saving a lot of data" is annoying too. And single use TMs is a flaw. But those are not game-breaking problems like some people try to claim. They're just minor inconveniences that in no way overshadow all the positives.
So yeah, this is my opinion. What's the best Pokemon game in your opinion?

Platinum is...Fine, but the mid-late game drags hard and coronet and the distorshit world can go frick themselves. Not to mention the mon' variety is absolute garbage.
PMD is a dogshit spinoff series that sucks shit to play, and Explorers of Sky is the worst of them because your evolutions are locked to the postgame.
I would say Platinum and HGSS are very close to each other, but one thing that annoys me in HGSS, is the fact that following Pokemon feature can't be turned off. It's cute to have a Pokemon following you, but having a Pokemon behind you 24/7 gets really annoying.
Also, Platinum has Secret Bases, while HGSS doesn't.

I'll trade an unfinished Kanto to the faster and simpler experience Crystal provides over HGSS. The gen 4 engine is slow, and I don't think natures and abilities enhance the single player experience. Natures detract from it in fact. Missing Viridian forest, Seafoam Islands, and Safari Zone are not integral to the experience to me. However, if you had said something like learnsets, then I agree there's a big problem. Lots of pokemon can't do better than Headbutt which is incredibly boring. At that point I may as well run another normal type for the STAB. I'm surprised that by gen 4 some learnsets are still so awful-- for example look up Natu and tell me how much fun it looks to use during the campaign of HGSS. You'll be using Fly when you get it after Chuck (so the dual psychic/flying type is useless against a fighting gym leader) and not a single offensive psychic move until level 59 (future sight is typeless damage in this gen)

GSC or HGSS are more or less interchangeable to me. Sometimes I'm in the mood for the gen 2 aesthetic, sometimes I want the gen 4 gameplay. I'm no gameplay purist, so a 3D remake with modern day QoL improvements could easily replace HGSS so long as they don't make it look terrible like BDSP. I'm never going back to that game due to its artstyle alone.
I like BDSP. I think it's a very good game. It's just kinda ignored because the superior Platinum exists.

It suffers from Gen 4 slowness, and the story isn't great (but that's the same for majority of Pokémon games) but Sinnoh is a fun region to explore, the difficulty is reasonable (not hard obviously), and Platinum's dex variety is pretty good with the fixes it made to the Sinnoh dex
B2W2 and GSC/HGSS are all close competitors, but I think Platinum handles difficulty a little better than those.

You get swamps, forests, grasslands, mountains, snowy regions, major urban centers, beaches, peninsulas, islands, small towns, villages and a volcano, all on one map. This is literally unprecedented for Pokemon and also has not been followed up since. It feels like a real RPG world. And they all feel organic and natural too rather than randomly tacked on.

OP here. I just want to clarify that, for over a decade, I was an Emerald fan who thought Emerald was the best Pokemon game ever. But recently I just realized that Platinum is better, largely because Sinnoh is better than Hoenn, and Hoenn actually DOES have too much water, like the meme says.

Let's Go is my favorite Switch Pokemon game. Based taste, anon!
Gen 3-7 games suffer from basic QoL like nature/stat editing that should have been there from the inception of gen 3. The QoL of gens 8/9 combined with the postgame facilities of gen 3-5 would have made the ideal pokemon game for me. Without that I can't justify calling something like plat, HGSS or BW2 the perfect pokemon game when you can't even change the nature of that roaming legendary you get once per save file, and when making a team for postgame content more or less is asking you to inject. If I'm strictly looking at the campaign I'd probably say I replay emerald/bw2 the most, though plat's gym leaders and elite 4 are good. I just don't really care for sinnoh as a region or the protag designs. If earlier gens had the QoL of current games the decision would be easy.
Emerald/Platinum/HGSS are the peak imo, and out of the bunch HGSS is the one that held up the best. It does have some flaws but it has by far the best atmosphere, from the cheery music, to Pokémon following you, to all the fun side-content you can do, and it's very lengthy too since you have 2 whole regions to explore (or 1.8ish since Johto is kind of small). It really feels like a whole adventure

I played diamon waaaay back when it came out and didn't like it, actually made me drop pokemon for a few years.
Played plat more recently and I don't know if the improvements over diamond/pearl are that drastic or if it's just my tastes have changed since I tried sinnoh the first time, but I consider it one of the best games in the series.
I was sorta distanced from BDSP because I didn't care about sinnoh when they came out, now I'm mad we didn't get a version of platinum with all the qol improvements from those games. It would've been great.
