Bowser's Fury, but on a grander scale and with Odyssey movement.

Bowser's Fury worked because it was the right size, making it bigger won't work and will just turn yet another series into open world slop.

Wonder is playing with limb deformation, forcing Mario’s body to suit the animation not the other way around. It also means body deformation mechanics like king Mario. This will probably get applied to the next 3d Mario game.

Fury with a more interesting setting would be nice.

          3D Mario already has deformation.

We already know open world Mario is next, given it's Nintendo EPD8 working on it I'm not worried in the least, regardless of what it is it's gonna be a masterpiece, worst that can happen is delays.

It needs replayability. Odyssey feels like you've exhausted it after getting everything once. Bowser's Fury had cool ideas going with a big event periodically affecting the world, a fun traversal method, powerup inventory, etc, so building on all of that for a bigger game could be a great improvement.

Go back to the 3d world/land formula with smaller, focused levels. Then, add unique movement like Odyssey and you have an addictive and wildly replayable mario game instead of the bloated mess that Odyssey is.

3D World has nothing to do with 3D Land.
      3D Land was lazy.

3D Land was great, NSMB2 was the lazy 3DS Mario game.

          Anonymous

Not him but NSMB2 was also a good game, its good gimmick made the game feel refreshing.
NSMBU is still a great game, but it’s just NSMB Wii again.
At least NSMB2 offers something different
There really isn’t a “lazy” Mario game on the 3DS, even Sticker Star wasn’t Lazy, it was a quality game with a very stupid direction but not lazy.

          3D World had good levels.
          3D Land is boring.

3D Land was the better single player experience.
3D World has great variety and level design but ruined with making them bloated for multiplayer.

The switch version fixed that with the move speed increase

            Anonymous

I was amazed that the switch port actually did that. The slow run speed was my biggest gripe with the Wii U version but I didn't see anybody voice my complaint as well, I thought I was the only one.

One giant level rendering the entirety of the mushroom kingdom, with tons of power-ups and methods of traversal. Lots of references to past games, Easter eggs, old familiar characters as well as new characters with stories to tell and tasks to perform.
I'd like Mario to unlock moves and tools as he progresses through the various areas giving a sense of progression and as well as allowing you to tackle older platforming challenges in new interesting ways.

    Shrinking and growing
Every world has areas that can only be reached by being Normal Mario, by being Macro Mario, and by being Micro Mario.
Micro Mario can run on water and jumps higher relative to his size, Macro Mario can't jump but can smash through certain obstacles; to defeat enemies he has to punch/kick them. Micro and Macro levels have unique enemy types, Micro being little bugs and stuff and Macro being kaiju monsters.

probably this but you know they will nerf it to be annoying from multiple playthroughs

It would be fricking awful, Japs and timmys make it near impossible to find a well crafted level, they flood the game with slop like branched multiplayer levels, refreshing levels, boss rushes, and music levels.
3DMM will be even worse since it takes more time and direction to design a 3d level than a 2d level.

      Anonymous

It's one of those things that's more interesting to see that they could do(make software that makes it intuitive to make and share 3D Mario levels), rather than something you want to actually experience(having to play amateur 3D Mario levels), even if you only restrict it to linear Galaxy/3D World-style levels.

Only once 3D mario games have run their course. Super Mario Bros got over saturated with too many games. But yes, you are correct.

Mario Odyssey’s scale with Bowser’s Fury’s platforming placement.
Bowser’s Fury pretty much made the platform challenge transitioning really great, whereas a lot of Odyssey’s play forming challenges were going into a specific void to do them.

A nice mix of the two while also adding it’s own unique flair as they usually do with be a great direction

They should really just make an iterative sequel to Odyssey, and make it a lot harder like Galaxy 2.
It's been long enough, that they're probably working on something for Nintendo's next system at this point though,

  16. 9 months ago

Odyssey but it takes place in a 3d version of paper Mario's world

  17. 9 months ago

Genuinely just take Odyssey and tweak it some. Have less moons overall, like 500 maximum but ideally some more manageable number like 120-200. I thought the purple coin system was really cool, that should be kept. Get rid of the tedious screenshot moons and the moronic minigame moons entirely, this isn't a Rareware game and shouldn't be. If achievement moons are back make collecting them faster so I'm not mashing the "A" button literally five minutes straight. The moon collecting cutscene should be faster as well, like how collecting Jiggies in Banjo-tooie didn't even stop you
I personally think Odyssey was a great base to work from and is already a great game, they can just fix a few little things here and there to really up the experience.
But then again I had the same expectations that TOTK would've been really special and instead it was every fricking problem of BOTW doubled-down on

      Anonymous

A lot of Odyessey's problems would go away if they brought back Sunshine's blue coins (or some kind of moon fragment, or whatever the frick).
When you're literally tripping over moons every five seconds, it cheapens the value of a moon, which isn't good, because that makes the game feel less satisfying in the long run. If instead of the super easy moons, you had an item that makes up one fifth of a moon though, that'd be fine. And the game doesn't even have to change that much mechanically, it's entirely a psychological difference.

        Anonymous

Nah, if Wario gets to be in a platformer again it should just be his own thing. His whole gimmick is that he doesn't have Mario's raw agility or dexterity, and makes up for it through a bull in a china shop mentality.

In an ideal world, somebody at Nintendo would take note of Pizza Tower's success and other stuff like Antonblast and that there's still an appetite for Wario Land.

I’m noticing this trend of fan made Wario and Waluigi stuff gearing Waluigi towards tech weapons and I love that

            Anonymous

One early thing Nintendo tried to do with Luigi when they had to make him more than just "Green Mario" was that he'd be the gadget/tinkering guy while Mario was a more conventional hands-on hero, using his fists, boots, fire and more straightforward tools like his signature hammer.
This is still somewhat present, since Luigi often has the Poltergust and associated tools with him in games like Smash or sports titles.

So if Waluigi is Luigi's evil version, it tracks, using tech weapons where Wario would just use raw muscle.

Another game actually like Mario 64, but also has tons of those miniature levels from Odyssey baked in. I don't think Mario should be an open world or open level based game, it should be fairly straight forward and linear. Even 64 had intended paths for each star.

bowsers fury is one my favorite games of all time and the only reason I'd recommend somebody to get a switch.

That said i doubt they can do it justice, i didnt like oddysey since it was so padded and the worlds felt so tame.
I hope that stop with the open world meme for the next game unless they can do bowsers fury levels again
