The farm never got more interesting, the npcs never evolved from a 1 joke character
the fighting / mining never got more interesting

Kind of a shame since if you fixed the performance and content issues then it'd be a good enough return to the series.
It's not that the content is missing or anything, the only mechanic it misses from 4 is the thing where you run a shop out of your window. It's just that there's only a single story arc that will take you maybe 2-3 months to do and then that's it. There's not that much dialog for the characters either.
There's also some other small issues like loss of detail (e.g. inspecting shit in a character's room will prompt them to comment on it) or the dreadfully slow passing of time that make it generally feel worse than other games.

They all should be remade with RF4S engine. Actually RF4 itself should be remade with HD graphics, and not that HD sprites.
There are flowers that grow in 120 days. You can reduce it to 28 with fertilizers and having 8 areas in prosperity, but it's still too much. And then you need to do that 10 times to get to level 10. I think this game was supposed to have an online feature, like RF1, 2 and 3. Whenever you traded an item it would level up by 1 level.

I don't know how the hell I missed that 5 finally released in the west but idk if it'll live up to what I expected after everyone basically accepting that the series was dead for years.

Best battle system, comfy sea exploration, challenging dungeons, big main town, no need to water crops(subjective, watering every crop wasnt my fav part of these games), some of the best looking waifus in the series, and only actual 3D Rune Factory until 5 came out.
Only con I would say is that they didnt let you take your waifu to dungeons like in RF3, but if I remember right you can take pets, which is cool.
I miss playing it now. If when I play 5 on PC it ends up being actually terrible, I just might start a new save on a emulator.

I don't like its farming system. Any game that doesn't follow the classic 3x3 grid feels strange. They went with 2x2 on some games. I don't know why they changed that.

RF3 is literally the best game in the series and RF4 might be the worst. I say might cuz I never played RF1 and RF2 I dropped before getting a waifu.
RF4 is the only one I bought a physical copy for the 3DS, put like 80h into that thing, and I did not enjoy it at all.
Shit generic waifus, and extremely fricking grind. 80h in and I remember still being locked out of weapon and armor I needed for the current dungeons I was doing, and increasing smithing level took an insane amount of grinding.
3 has a larger cast of bachelorettes, but aside from three or four outliers, they're all cardboard cutouts compared to 4's girls. 4 has quality over quantity.
4 has so much content that it breaks some people's brains. You need to be able to juggle a lot of things at once in order to progress the game at a meaningful speed.
I wouldn't recommend it even if it doesn't have performance issues. I would say I'm more forgiving of it than most people even, but I wouldn't say it's a good game.
