What's the best way to play Diablo? Is the Devilution X source port good?

What's the best way to play Diablo? Is the Devilution X source port good? I played the original game a while ago on my CRT, but now I have a new PC, it'll probably look like shit on my modern monitor.
The CRT was nice, though, it even had scanlines because I reduced its resolution from 1024x768 to 640x480

What the frick, you can play Diablo on a 3DS? That's insane, I wonder if it has 3D.

DevilutionX is really fantastic. If you want to go old-school a $5 disc or the GOG version are also great. It's just fricking awesome no matter how you play it.

I could never get it to work when I had a hacked 3DS but maybe you'll have better luck.

You read the lore on wiki then skip to Diablo 2.
Diablo 1 is dreadfully boring and bad.

      >diablo 1
      11/10 atmosphere
      -1/10 gameplay

how can two anons be so wrong

Don't use Hellfire until you've beaten the game, it adds a bunch of shit that ranges from mediocre to bad.
Devolution is good, but play it on 1360x768 max if you want it as sharp as possible, don't know about scanlines.
Other than that - there is not much to it, D2 is the one with bonkers stuff like 60fps magicry.

And frick those c**ts telling you to skip, Diablo is fantastic still, cozy, unbloated and addictive.
Yeah, there are no skills or whatever, but treat it as it's own game and you are good, there are magic scrolls to use.

      skill-trees ruined the genre tbqhfam

The 3DS port is just straight port from the PC version and doesn't utilise any of its features like touchscreen, dual screen or 3D. Playing Diablo on a single small 3DS screen using the D-Pad or joystick.
Same goes for the Android port, it just uses an on-screen joystick. Disappointing.

I just played it normally last time. The default scaling looked fine.
A computer CRT monitor wouldn't have scanlines, by the way. Those are an artifact of outputting every other line on an interlaced television.

Actually, if you lower the resolution enough, it will have "scanlines"

Nah 640x480 on a VGA CRT monitor is still progressive scan. And you will see the lines.

I remember once when I came home from school after a long day, and it's a dark winter evening. I'm home alone and the darkness and spooky music actually starts getting on my nerves, in spite of playing for years, I've now learned what the Black Deaths actually do and I'm paranoid as frick about them, to the point that my childish imagination makes me wary about those neon yellow cadavers sculking around in my dark apartment, reaching out towards me from dark corners and crevices from the corners of my vision or nearby dark spaces. I had to stop playing for a while because it got a bit much for me, but at the same time I felt impressed at how a game which was already relatively old at that time (2003 or 2004 maybe?), was still so very immersive for me. I like Diablo 2, but it never got such a grasp on my imagination, it doesn't keep coming back to me in dreams over and over like the first one still does 25 years later.

Reading the actual manual is fun and opens up the world by a surprising amount. You then have fun with the basic but decent gameplay while enjoying the classic atmosphere. This then makes the D2 playthrough all the better: That same setting glimpsed from 1 gets further realized and expanded upon in 2, similar style and atmosphere is maintained, and even with a change of direction in class design the gameplay is still an improvement.
Uelman's tunes were the glue that held the """feels""" of these games together, so it's weird that he decided to frick everything up with the expansion. The original menu music shits on LoD's:

I actually finally got around to trying Hellfire. Was feeling a bit lazy, so I went as a warrior.

Either literally a decade+ away from the game somehow improved my skill, or the game was a whole lot easier than I remembered it, or Hellfire really amps you up, because while I occasionally had some minor issues, I pretty much breezed through it on three separate playthroughs, normal-nightmare-hell. Even was able to grind until I could buy enough elixer to max out my stats. Never even did that on multiplayer back in the day.

In case anyone cares about the kit loadout, I've got as my primaries:

      Helmet: Veil of Steel
      Amulet: Amulet of Zodiac (+16)
      Ring 1: Ring of Harmony
Ring 2: Ring of the Heavens (+15)
Weapon: King's Sword of Gore (+100 to hit, +157% damage, +11 damage on top)
Armor: Blessed Plate of Precision +93% armor, +19 Dex
Shield: Obsidian Shield of the Tiger, +35% resist all, +44 HP.

I hate when I kill Diablo and an enemy drops something but I can't move and then the cutscene plays and boots me out of the game. It's like his final act of evil.

Wait, can you only move or attack with the mouse? I forgot about it, that's pretty fricked up.
You can move with WASD in other diablo clones like Torchlight, this is pretty bad.
No, I mean, it works, it just feels like you're actually controlling your character if you can move him around instead of playing a one-man RTS.
Seems like you can use the controller in devilution, I'll try it out.

D1 is about taking it easy~. You are not a god, you are a man fighting the minions of hell. Know when to fight your battles know when to run. Learn your environment and use it to your advantage. Or play mage and steamroll the game. You can also alr click with a bow to shoot arrows while standing still in any direction.

Its a 90's game dude it aint doom. Its an RPG you take your time. Warrior is hard without magic and range, it takes a few levels to build up. Warrior is a fricking b***h to play at first till you get some good gear. Pray you get lucky and find gnarled root on the first 3 floors. It drops as both a club and spiked club amazing stats plus 300% damage added all rez plus to hit % takes def away but its worth it.
