The biggest complaint for the steam version is literally "NOOOOOOOO IT DOESN'T HAVE THE SNES GFX LIKE MY NOSTALGIA GOGGLES!". You can download the Demaster to get the old SNES look though I think they added original textures or HD model option.

Steam is fine. Might need a few UI mods, I forget if they fixed that or not.
SNES emulator is probably the best though.

  5. 3 months ago

If you never played the original the steam one is fine. The only issue was during launch virtually everything has been fixed and quality of life fixes for some of the 4:3->16:9 fixes are easily downloadable in a mod. The community page has a mega pack for it IIRC that makes it basically 1:1 for the SNES.

On it's release it had some shitty wide screen stretching that made shit jitter and jerk around the screen. It's been fixed, the only reason to play the original is if you're not down to drag and drop the demake files into the install for the old shit.

If you're playing for the first time you won't care about it

I wish more games had dual and triple techs like Chrono Trigger. Sea of Stars sorta seems to, which is nice.

      Anonymous

The problem is the mechanics of them
      >Save a turn to use a stronger attack
      >Attack scaling has to be better than attacking every turn (1.1-1.4x better)
      >But can't be too powerful so as to make them mandatory (1.5-2.5x better)
The JRPG masters have experimented with this in multiple ways over years. From the dual/triple tech system, to the combo/gear level system in xenogears, to the elemental system in Cross. All the way up to modern tinkering taking this concept to the extremes like Bravely Default's default system, and Ocotpath's system.

All of these have proven strategic, but ultimately just risk vs. reward systems that exponentially increase the risk vs. the reward vs. careful planning and tactical use of combat resources.

Thanks for coming to my Second Wind video.

Played this shit like 12 years ago and I don't even remember a boss fight (presumably) named Heckran. Brain was on autopilot the whole time, it's like there was nothing to do. Never a good sign when the individual player is completely optional to the experience, especially for a self-proclaimed RPG.
Honestly it reminded me of Golden Sun a lot. Interesting world and lore, animations, enemy design, etc... but absolutely nothing going on gameplay-wise. Do I love Golden Sun? Absolutely. Would I recommend it as a video game? Jesus Christ no.
Take a step back and have some standards my man. (You)'re the reason "Hard Mode" of FFVIIR is locked behind a playthrough of Journalism Mode.

I don't know. Really sounds like you didn't play it. Chrono Triggers bosses are notorious for punishing mashing the A button. It's not Final Fantasy. Strategy is actually required for even regular enemy fights. more and more so as you go.

I said I didn't remember the fight. If you forgot I said that like five minutes ago, surely you can understand why I'd forget such a forgettable encounter from twelve years ago.
Regardless, there's the fight. It's god awful. The only strategy is DON'T ATTACK WHEN THE BOSS GOADS YOU TO, and even then the numbskull playing it does it and it has no major lasting effect. I'm shaking right now, what a memorable experience.

Some punish it, but most don't. I beat most of the game with the Berserker accessories on two of my characters, they just utterly wrecked most enemies. Even bosses that counterattacked for hitting the wrong thing like Son of Sun and Queen Zeal couldn't stop the rape train that was Ayla.

The company went through a full restructuring and most people left after staying on as consultants for a while:

"Following both the failure of The Spirits Within and a delay to Final Fantasy X (2001) for the PlayStation 2, Square suffered a financial loss for the first time, prompting Sakaguchi, Takechi, and director Masatsugu Hiramatsu to resign from their positions.[8][86] Sakaguchi was kept on as executive producer for Final Fantasy, while Takechi and Hiramatsu were retained as external consultants.[86] This period left Sakaguchi in a state of low morale.[87] In late 2001, Suzuki stepped down as President, and was replaced by Wada.[88] Yosuke Matsuda became Senior Vice President.[82] Kenji Ito also left during this period to work as a freelance composer.[60] Prior to the film's release, rival company Enix was proposing merging with another game company to alleviate development costs, opening serious discussions with Square in 2000.[89][90] Square's financial losses with The Spirits Within prompted Enix to halt discussions.[90]"

"Under Wada, the company underwent restructuring with the intent of streamlining production and resources, and cutting development costs to increase profits.[91] After evaluation of its financial position, and with changes to the console war due to Microsoft's Xbox, Square opened talks with Nintendo for the first time since their breakup in the 1990s.[92][93] The talks were successful, with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles beginning development for the GameCube in late 2001.[93][94] Square also began production on Final Fantasy X-2, the first direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game.[91][95][96] Final Fantasy X-2 was Sakaguchi's last credited project at Square, and he left the company in 2003.[97] Around this time, Square also began development on Kingdom Hearts (2002), with Nomura making his directorial debut. The game was a collaboration between Square and The Walt Disney Company, blending Disney characters with Final Fantasy elements in an original story.[98][99] Kingdom Hearts was Shimomura's last project as an in-house composer before going freelance in 2002.[100] Also released in 2002 was the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XI, the company's first MMORPG.[101][73] Conceived by Sakaguchi, it was developed by the Chrono team and led by Ishii.[73] Final Fantasy XI and its first expansion was Kato's last work for Square before leaving in 2002 to go freelance.[102]"

Chrono Trigger felt so short compared to other SNES RPGs that I played. The pacing to the story is fast, but at the same time I feel it's so fast that you don't really get to enjoy the places you go.

    >Fall in time warp to 2300 AD
    >Planet is wrecked and apocalyptic, have to explore to find out what happened
    >Two short dungeons and a bike race later, you're out and not returning except for a brief gaiden chapter at the very end of the game

    >Discover antiquity
    >Get a very short and brief look at Zeal before the plot happens and everything falls apart, leaving that era only a single small village and nothing else

I feel like only the middle ages and prehistory really get any screen time, the other eras just feel like a one-off. And the game itself is really short for an RPG of its time, only about 10 hours long or so.

The original translation is pretty shitty, if you really want to play the SNES version at least get a retranslation patch.
DS version is good despite what people say, people just don't like the extra content, which isn't even that bad anyway.
