1-1 definitely fricks new people up. Imagine a new player trying to do the Ostrava thing, or interacting with dragons.

only 1-3/1-4 is hard, because the enemies scale so ridicolously rapidly after you cross a double door into Boletarian Palace that the ridicolous amount of healing consumables you get can't save you from the alpha damage of mobs

One of my friends quit on 1-1 cause it was too hard and it pissed him off having to start from the beginning every time. He never played a from game after that until he bought into the elden ring hype and he beat that. So yea, DeS is harder.

Lots of morons quit 1-1 because they had no idea how to play a souls game.
There's more players that quit at Taurus Demon, having done the burg and dying to him 100 times, ending up grinding 15 levels there.

In terms of damage and HP counts, DeS is extremely casual compared to any of the sequels.
The game is balanced around a player in soul form but with the cling ring on.
Bosses also have like no HP compared to DS1/2/3, their values are literally 1/2 on average.

Enemies in 1-1 don't do any damage they're clearly scaled for a player with half HP. Even the Blue Eye knight 3 shots you.
If this was any other souls game, you'd get 3-4 shot by a hollow and 1 shot by the elite knight if you had half HP as any starting class.

Believe it or not, there was a time when Dark Souls didn't exist.
Demon's Souls got popular on Ganker before it even got a western release. People imported and hyped it up, then when it was finally released it was beloved.
I won't pretend Ganker was solely responsible, but the fact that it was so popular here definitely helped Dark Souls get created in the first place.
Basically every single Demon's Souls comic made originated here.

It was a breath of fresh air while also being an extremely accessible non-western game that also niche as frick. A perfect storm of Ganker circlejerking potential. Decent but extremely gate-kept.
Well now that the cat is out of the bag, and souls games are mainstream, Ganker hates it.

Yes unlike DeS, the new souls game don't cater to mindless button mashing and spamming roll the second you see a boss move slightly, you kinda need to read the attack and react properly.

    >black world tendency is a great idea done incorrectly, tendency itself is a cool idea but was executed poorly and even worse with Gravelording in DS1

It was the first of the souls games, and even when it's not perfectly original on its own, most other souls games are derivative of it.

All that b***hing and whining people give DS3 about it's lack of originality and bringing back NPCs and locations from DS1? DS1 is already guilty of that by being a multiplat demon's souls in effect.

But originality or lack thereof isn't the main thing. Demon's souls has impeccable atmosphere. A ghostly, ethereal feel to the game that persists throughout all levels to some degree. There's a great tension that the others souls games couldn't capture. It's a lot more rough and unpolished, but like a hand-drawn circle vs a computer generated perfect circle, the imperfections are a part of its identity.

  10. 8 months ago

Dark Souls 1 is the same game but slightly better in every way.
The appeal of Demon's Souls to a typical Ganker poster is just a simple case of fewer people having played it due to PS3 emulation requiring a relatively beefy PC.

There's also a bunch of discorn troons posing as "the OG From fans" shitting on DS3, BB, Sekiro, ER and even AC6 by calling those games easymode/shallow/rollspam even though DeS is the easiest game by far with the fastest roll recovery of any of these titles.

The remake came out and stirred up more discussion. It just pisses me off because it was a perfect canidate for a remake in terms of cut content, and refining some rougher spots like world tendancy. Instead it's outsourced and just looks visually different. Totally worth it.

      Anonymous

It's really a shame, especially because a remake with some rebalancing of hyperarmor, weapons, magic and restored/added cut content would have made for a great experience.

      Anonymous

The remake was a huge blunder because it kept too many of the objectively broken things like being able to stunlock 90% of enemies with a dagger, while most slow mid to huge size weapons had no hyperamor and got you stunlocked instead, also shit like instant backstabs killed online interactions in 2 months.
That plus easymode magic and almost no enemies that are resistant to it.

It's really a shame, especially because a remake with some rebalancing of hyperarmor, weapons, magic and restored/added cut content would have made for a great experience.

The remake really should've used DS3 as a base for mechanics because that game is most similar in speed and in terms of hyperamor system with poise being just a buff to the existant hyperamor frames.
Also a 6th archestone based on notes From FROM wouldn't have been that hard.

As it stands, the remake we got was more of an overdone port on a new engine with new graphics but almost nothing improved.

        Anonymous

The biggest blunder was that DeS is a game who's story is meant to be told visually and environmentally. Bluepoint went and obliterated the visuals entirely without an ounce of understanding of the source material.

          Anonymous

Only a few changes were utter trash and I could live with them of the gameplay was improved, sadly it wasn't.
A complete waste of time and effort for the sake of "staying true to the gameplay of the OG"

And they didn't even do that, they changed a bunch of fundamental things like rolling in any direction while locked on, something that is OP vs the slow enemies with bad turning ratea. At least playing unlocked to abuse them in OG took constant camera management.

        Anonymous

Fromsoftware should have handled the remake, but they are probably too big and busy to invest in exclusives.
I wouldn't put it past Sony to try to capitalize on Bloodborne for PS6 launch and pull another demake blunder

Demon's Souls is an extremely well-designed game that encourages careful observation and experimentation with your gear, spells, miracles, etc. This is all in regard to the original game. The OST was varied and memorable, and it had a neat mix of early medieval Europe with an almost dream-like, eerie magic that made the Scourge feel like a truly major event. Also, Demon's Souls was basically the first actual game the PS3 ever got, saving the console in that regard.

Why do Desgays claim only Demon's souls incentivizes the use of damage type weakness when you can three shot with a basic mace Darkroot Garden golems?

      Anonymous

Damage types mattered way less in Dark Souls 1, and two-handing against guards did as well, maybe even in general.

        Anonymous

2handing always mattered, otherwise you bounce off shields with every weapons but maces and clubs
In DS2 and DS3 it matters even more because on Ultra weapons, you can't be parried if you 2H unless you do a rolling attack.
And damage types can easily add 50% extra damage plus effects like knocking down enemies like skeletons on every hit if you use a big hammer.

DeS had extremely moronic shit like having your bare fist count as a blunt attack and doing x10 more damage than a sword to skeletons, being actually better than a club DPS wise because the swings are faster and since enemies don't have poise you can just stunlock them in a 1v1.

          Anonymous

In Demon's Souls, 2H attacks did more stamina damage and tore through more of the stability of shields when compared to DS 1's 2H attacks. The 2H factor was nerfed quite a bit for DS 1, and DS 2 and 3 handled it differently. The bare hands punches doing blunt damage in DeS made sense, and that was a creative way to include a panic option against certain foes while also making a bare hands run not a "2 damage per hit" hell.

So one day I popped the game in, made a character, and fricked around for a bit. Game did not compel me in the slightest and I never returned to it. Fast forward about three years and all of a sudden that game that I didn't care about is now considered a cult classic.

DeS deserves a lot of respect for being the first and getting the ball rolling, but part of that respect is not to lie and oversell it as "the OG souls game before FROM went casual".

of course, i agree with all of that. i think the fact that they got so much right on their very first crack at it is commendable and respectable, but to just ignore issues with the game and scream "IT HAS SOUL" every time you praise the game, is just dishonest and gay. as i said, i personally like demon's souls a lot and would love a sequel now that fromsoft has become more experienced with their formula. like, I would love for them to revisit concepts like linear levels and world tendency and shit but just implemented much much better.

I definitely prefer Demon's Souls aesthetic a bit more. It has this "gilded age lost" feel, like just a little while before everything might have been pretty nice, but very recently became a slimy miserable shit hole. Dark Souls has an "everything's fricked and this great land has just fallen apart due to centuries of neglect". I also really like the brass, organ, and drum heavy score of Demon's a lot more than the more balanced orchestral stuff in the Dark series.

In Demon's it feels like you're staving off a sudden insurmountable primordial disaster, and Dark is more combatting the entropy of a world ruled by god like beings that are just hanging out waiting for the world to die in a few more centuries.

I've played with a small screen my whole life, my first computer was a Toshiba netbook hand-me-down from my mother and the maximum resolution on it was 1024 x 768, my first handheld was a PSP, my first real console was a N64 on a crt, my next console after that was my PS3 on a Sony Tonitron, I played MGSV on it. When I was finally able to afford a monitor I somehow chose the smallest one, the max it could do was 1080i.
I don't know why but it's my element. I've bought bigger screens since then, but I feel innately more comfortable with a Wii U at my bedside and ever since that died the Deck's been admirably taking over the job without any hitches.

Dark Souls had the interconnected world which made the first half great, but Demons' Souls had better individual areas, and already did that "style" of gameplay. The only people who say DaS is better are PTD secondaries who either played DaS first, or just never played DeS.

It makes people feel special, gives them a felling of belonging to a exclusive group.

You don't need a PS3 to play DeS anymore, in fact, it's better emulated now.

Actually had a SOUL and atmosphere instead of generic rollslop and orchestrafart music to blare over all the boss fights that sound the same

I've always considered it better and I've only gotten more bitter about it over the years with Dark Souls gays harshly criticizing any potential faults of Demon's Souls and how it's not like Dark Souls while being very generous with or ignoring Dark Souls own faults. The one thing I miss the most about Demon's Souls is the invasions no other game has done it right and by Dark Souls 2 they started hindering the invader and that progressed into what Elden Ring is now.
