Capcom invested a frick ton of money in a new mocap studio sometime back. I wonder if their first order of business was to scan some cats in wigs.
It's a cat's face pasted onto a human head. Cats skulls aren't shaped the same way as humans, so it just ends up looking awkward. Their faces are also extremely flat, which also looks awkward and not at all how a cat's face should look.
I'm guessing they didn't give them proper fully cat-shaped heads because they didn't want to have to design helmets to fit that different head shape or do the usual thing and just say they can't wear helmets, but it looks really bad. Something like FFXI's or Bless Online's human face with a cat nose would have looked much better if they weren't going to go all the way and give them the head shape to match the facial features they were giving them.

is perfectly flat, and pic related seems to have an unnaturally flat face as well.
Only on release will we know for sure, but the small amount of them we've seen with in-game footage looks very bad.

Faces definitely improved. I feel like they either weren't finished and were rushed into the first trailer or they redid them after getting negative feedback.

I am ambivalent about them. normally I'm down for alternate races in a fantasy game, but the beastren really just make me think of furries, and I really don't enjoy being reminded of the existence of furries. With the exception of that weird goblin thing they keep around, the Thundercats all have completely human facial features. They're not even remotely comparable.
Hence the bootleg label, dumb dumb. They're pretty much like the Thundercats, no tails and elf like ears but with fricked up faces that are too human in proportions making them look like someone wearing a mask.
