I love replaying the game and seeing just how many times the Rood Inverse just shows up, for no reason. Really gives Lea Monde a very abrasive atmosphere, like it is living and breathing and wants to kill you. Like System Shock, almost, but less intrusive.
Diablo 2 (Act 1)
FEAR
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Higurashi Chapter 1
Metro 2033
Disco Elysium
Bloodborne
I dunno if I have a single "most" atmospheric game, but those all stand out above the other games I've played. I didn't think too hard on the choices.
>Xanadu Next
Such a simple concept done exceedingly well. I wish there were more games that just had you exploring a giant dungeon as the primary plot.
There's just something about the loop of delving deeper and heading back to town and repeating over and over.
>coming back to town to find your assistant has gotten a little better at cooking >nice hot meal while you read new (bretty good) lore dumps >welp, back to the old grind
All in a brisk 15 hour package. God tier game

Made me buy it straight away, good job anons
As for something that I haven't seen mentioned yet, the ps1 Tomb Raider games
all nu raider games combined don't have as much atmosphere and mystery as laras mansion in TR3
It's not the MOST atmospheric game I've ever played, but there's something about how they handled Cyrodiil in Oblivion.
Skyrim wasn't anywhere near as memorable for me and I'm not sure why. Artstyle maybe? Oblivion just has this weird kind of fantasy jank that stuck with me.
but the closest thing I can think of, is when I feel so part of a game's world that I can genuinely just play the game forever. Games to do this for me were Hollow Knight, Dark Souls 1, and for some moments, Tomb Raider 1 and 3
nta but Gothic 3 has absolutely stellar soundtrack, really fricking good so that might've been a factor. And the game is decent with the community patch (tho obv. inferior to previous installments).
I can't just name a single game, so I'll post a list.
-Diablo 1 & 2
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
-ShadowMan
-System Shock 2
-LoK the series as a whole
-V:TM Bloodlines Redemption is also decent but not right there.
-Max Payne 1
-LA Noir
-Myth
-Dank Souls
-Disciples 2
-Arcanum
-Deu Sex
That's just from top of my head.
This, also my all time favorite game
Some fms come close and some even surpass it with dripping atmosphere like Endless Rain and Into the Odd, the latter probably being my single favorite level Ive ever played in gaming

it's just people dickriding fromsoft, even though random koreans just released a bad souls game that shits on anything they produced, people still haven't realized fromsoft are awful
Im always bringing up kingsfield and how it shits all over Soulsborne. I did watch the majular video and its nice but im still gonna post kingsfield whether it exist or not. Going from the verdite trilogy to dark souls 3 was a massive shock, the game design literally fell off a cliff into a toliet, i have never been more offended. At to some people dark souls 3 is all they know
What would you say is the best way to play king's field?
They're the only fromsoft series i haven't played other than evergrace.
Can i top Lost Kingdom as my favorite?
Emulated in higher res, keep the tank controls, it plays splendid on keyboard, ask me for my binds if you wanna know
Play in order and dont get confused like me
I did 1 3 2 because the fricked localized naming scheme.
Kingsfield English patched > Kingsfield US (Actually play the europe rom for less framerate fluctuation) > Kingsfield 3 pilot style English patched > Kingsfield 2 US > Kingsfield 4/ancient city

Yes.
Makes sense, it's usually what happens on Ganker because nobody here has a mind of their own. I haven't seen KF4 mentioned in months, and I've seen it mentioned or a screenshot from it 4 times today alone

I've played all of these
Pathologic 2 is more atmospheric. I've never had such a good time being anxious and depressed.
It's definitely far from the best game on that list. Pathologic 2 is not fun whatsoever. It's painful, and slow, and difficult, and every decision hurts.
>Baroque was usually mentioned in these kind of threads >gets a fan translation for the Saturn version >no one talks about it anymore
Did people brought it up just because it was a "hidden gem"?
Also, answering the question, SMT Nocturne or SH1
Soul Reaver 2
Arx Fatalis
Half Life 2 back when it first came out
Brood War
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Elden Ring / DS1
Metro 2033 - i was blown away when i first played it
Pretty much any PS1 rpg

Dragon's Dogma (not for aesthetic as much as how the pawns make it feel like a party adventure)
KCD
P3FES
Deus Ex
Arx Fatalis
Obra Dinn
Chrono Trigger
anachronox was a very janky game, but I feel like it was one of the few games I have ever played that actually took advantage of the medium in terms of just taking you on an adventure to weird and interesting and sometimes epic places and mixing things up
every new place you went to had a unique atmosphere
the music helped a lot, too
most other games I play feels so safe in comparison >it's a game, we can go anywhere and do anything! anyway, here's a generic fantasy/sci fi/near future place where you fight people, I guess
there are others of course, but I don't think anyone else is going to mention anachronox so here I am
pic related but meaningless if you didn't play it
you just had to be there
This reminds me that I forgot to mention silent hill 2, I'd mention 1 too but...1 is more scary and unsettling than immersive/atmospheric if that makes sense, but both games have a bit of both to varying degrees, I just think SH2 gives slightly more that's more compelling from an "experience the narrative" perspective rather than "experience the horror" perspective that is SH1.
I find the original particularly atmosperic thanks to the open town segments, walking around looking at the various buildings as snow falls is inctedibly atmospheric.
Probably Silent Hill back in '99. Soul Reaver was pretty atmospheric for its time. Max Payne. STALKER is very atmospheric. Can't think of any modern titles that really pulled me in.
Yes, Silent Hill is the most atmospheric game I've ever played, I agree with these anons. Only game that comes close to topping it is Abe's Oddysee, but it loses out a bit because it's easier to remember that you're playing a video game there, whereas in Silent Hill you can fall completely into the experience in a way that most games can only dream of accomplishing.

Vagrant Story.

I replayed the original Manhunt recently. It has absolutely superb atmosphere. Tense and oppressive.
Agreed. Played it back on PS2 and now again on ps4.

I've played a lot of the best atmospheric games and Pathologic 2 is the best.
Here
See
I've played all of these
Pathologic 2 is more atmospheric. I've never had such a good time being anxious and depressed.
I forgot about Pathologic 2 it should be on that list.
While we are at it, The Void made by the same dev is hitting same notes.
It's definitely far from the best game on that list. Pathologic 2 is not fun whatsoever. It's painful, and slow, and difficult, and every decision hurts.
It's fantastic.
I enjoyed the second time I played Pathologic 2 much more because I knew how to game the systems.
I didn't like it at all. One of the worst PC game purchases I ever made.
>I played Pathologic 2 and had a horrible time
Good. That's the intended experience.

Anachronox is great. Still have it installed.
Shame the combat was so ass, I think a lot of people passed up on it because of that.
Alan Wake 2 honestly looks like it'll be an atmosphere masterpiece: https://youtu.be/78LI3SUKK5w?si=U1fqp3wFFh9o-6rZ
Cruelty squad probably
Daggerfall
Id say Gothic 1, but that also because of the circumtances. Got it blindly, played it over holidays and my brother had to help me several times.
Dark and Darker
Silent Hill 1, playing it at night in total darkness is an amazing experience.
