    Actual facts frick you.

    >in the Pro Skater bonus level of Tony Hawk's Underground 2, there is a broken effect in the "Aztec" section of the map. A small flame lamp on the top left part of the map (after walking in the main doorway) has a small sprite of a hazard sign with "Temp Particles" written on it. This was not fixed before release.
    >Devil May Cry 3 is influenced by a fake irl occult grimoire known as the "Simon Necronomicon", which broadly mixed the stories of HP Lovecraft, Aleister Crowley's religion and occult system of Thelema, and more recent discoveries in Babylonian history. As such, Arkham is named after the town in Lovecraft's writings. Jester was originally called Joker, because he's a wild card, but this was changed during the recording of dialogue because of the potential confused association with Batman (though he still calls himself "Joker" in his in-game voice lines in Special Edition). The main location, the Temen-ni-gru, is a Babylonian name translating to "foundation of fear". The main halls have these vertical glowing red and blue walls with what appear to be abstract carvings on them, but are actually enlarged cuneiform turned sideways.
    >the very first level in the original Tomb Raider is Vilcabamba, a place known in the historical record to have been a settlement Mesoamericans fled to to try and hide from the Conquistadors. Between the original game and the remake, the location of the actual Vilcabamba was confirmed by archaeologists and historians, though the location was well known and visited prior to then. There were no dinosaurs living in it, sadly.
    >in Sekiro, in the Fountainhead Palace, some people have theorised that the crater from which the immortal waters spring was caused by a meteor, harkening back to interstellar themes in Bloodborne and later Elden Ring. It seems that the okami there practiced onmyodo astrology to calculate positions of meteorites, as a shikibari/astrological board can be found in some of the rooms

      >in Nioh you play as William Adams, an irl British sailor from Kent (whose name in Japanese, Anjin-sama, basically translates to "sailor man"). However the devs found it less believable that Brits could speak to spirits, so they rewrote him to be Irish. Main antagonist Edward Kelley, depicted as a Brit homunculus was, however, part Irish in real life.

      >most of the quests in Okami are based on specific folk tales, most notably the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter which was first recorded in 1592 and implies the girl inside the bamboo was, as the game also implies, some sort of alien, distinct from the kami and other known spirits.

      >Revolver Ocelot is visually based on Lee van Cleef who appears as an antagonist in Escape From New York, though Ocelot's design harkens back to van Cleef's westerns
      >the first boss in Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, named Tajima, is based on the antagonist of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo, though he uses a revolver instead of a flintlock due to Tenchu being set in more recent times. Tessu, the unlockable third character, is based on a tv character called Baian the Assassin, who was played by numerous actors through the years, most notably a young Ken Watanabe

      >most Tony Hawk levels pull from irl skate spots, often featured in videos from the period. But the strip club in Tampa in THUG is an amalgamation of the Mons Venus and the 2001 Odyssey; two classy joints frequented by skaters after the annual Tampa Am and Pro contests. Similarly, many of the songs and even the gaps in these levels are pulled from skate videos and you can often find in-game gaps by trying to recreate what you can see in said videos (eg: the "Fountain Gap" in Philidelphia is pulled from a Toy Machine video where Kerry Getz cleared it)

The story about Vilcabamba is pretty funny, archeologists though it was a mythical place and last refuge against the Spanish believed to be only a legend. But one day an archeologist saw some ruins on the distance and asked one of the shepherds accompanying him what was that place abd the shepherd told him it was called Vilcabamba

Advance Wars DS features main character Jake who essentially takes the role of Andy from the previous games as the "main" character of the story. In the English version he speaks using silly 90s surfer lingo, but in the Japanese version his writing is completely neutral. His original name is also not Jake but John.

Magic John is a Japan only Megaman ripoff from the end of the NES's lifespan. The main character is John, a bland-as-can-be action protagonist who shoots balls from his hand. In the American release, named Totally Rad, many characters were re-skinned and additional cutscenes were added to make up a whole new plot. The name John was changed to Jake, and he now uses all sorts of cool 90s lingo.

The way water appears to move in games like Banjo-Kazooie is that it's not just a big plane lazily inserted into the world. It has its own mesh cut into where it would intersect the ground. The vertices not on the edge are animated to slowly move and can change their vertex color to appear to shimmer.

Some of the challenges in L.O.G.'s Lost Challenges DLC for Nuts and Bolts were meant for the cut 6th world, Weird West.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R is one of the first truly multi-core parallel processing games, but the game doesn't really check if everything happens in the correct order. When you load a save, different cores load different things and those things are initialized as soon as they are loaded. When the player loads a save, the game loads and activates enemy AI before it has finished loading the level geometry and its colliders, so every enemy sees the player through every wall before the player has even gained control over the character. That's why everyone is instantly attacking you even though prior to saving they hadn't detected you yet.

Yes. There are a few stealth missions, or at least missions where stealth is technically possible, but you absolutely cannot save your game during the middle of it because depending on how your CPU cores load the game assets, the enemies can see you through walls that haven't loaded in yet before the loading screen has passed. So, you have to save your game outside the range of those NPCs, or in the case of Agroprom, save in the underground level before the institute and never save while at the institute.

    >M Bison (Vega in Japan) is heavily based on the villain from the Teito Monogatari novels, better known as Doomed Megalopolis from its anime and live action film adaptations. The villain, Kato Yasunori, is a mysterious and seemingly ancient onmyodo sorcerer whose goal is to utterly destroy all of Tokyo, who normally wears the uniform of an officer in the Japanese imperial army. Yasunori's most distinctive design detail (beyond his cape and peaked cap) is most likely his white dress gloves embroidered with a pentagram representing the five elements of daoist systems. This most likely also influenced the designs of Alucard in Hellsing and Roy Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist. The artist who did the poster for the Doomed Megalopolis anime also did art for Metal Gear Solid (and lots of other sci-fi)

    >the enemy Crystal Viper in Vanquish is a reference to Crystal Bowie from Space Adventure Cobra. Cobra was also an influence on Dante from Devil May Cry.

    >The Darkness is known for featuring entire films in-game for you to watch, most notably To Kill A Mockingbird. But it also features entire runs of Top Cow comic series, graffiti painted in real life then added to the game as photo textures, and a star studded voice cast that included Face from The A Team and Rita Repulsa from Might Morphin' Power Rangers (and Mike Patton, of course). The Darkness also features a dynamic soundtrack that changes depending both on enemy awareness and if you have Darkness powers active, though most people don't notice because you're almost always in full combat with Darkness powers active.

    >Ape Escape is the first third person action game to feature a dynamic soundtrack that changes based on your actions (mostly it drops tracks to get quieter if you're crawling, then drops more if you're pretending to be dead).

The sign is a subtle joke. The egg is called "Stop n' Swop", where Stop and Swop both end in the sound "-op", thus rhyming with the name of the owner, Sneed. The sign says that the shop was "Formerly Chuck's", implying that the two words beginning with "S" and "C" would have ended with "-ock", rhyming with "Chuck". So, when Chuck owned the shop, it would have been called "Chuck's Sock n' wiener"

Noita's spell duplication perk happens after the spell its trying to copy evaluates draws (and is frame based RNG, so stacking it will cause either all copies to fire, or none), which means if you use it with a trigger, it casts a copy of the spell you're trying to trigger rather than the spell that's triggering.

In Resident Evil games with adaptive difficulty, the way it's designed is that walls and ceilings are given HP values, and firing bullets into them and bringing their HP to zero causes a change in the adaptive difficulty. This is due to the game interpreting walls reaching zero HP as "missing your shots" since you'd normally be trying to fire at enemies. Doing this reduces the difficulty, which is why you will see some speedrunners empty magazines into walls during segments where the player is unable to proceed (like taking a long elevator), because this makes the upcoming sections easier to deal with.

No, the walls aren't alive. It's just weird programming decisions, but funnily enough, some walls have more HP than other walls. It's not like it's a fixed amount across the whole game, which I guess is the developers taking into account the fact that the player can upgrade their weapons, so later game areas have walls with higher HP to account for this, otherwise you would shoot the wall once and game the run while losing as little ammo as possible. This is also why shooting at the sky (when you're firing at flying enemies) doesn't reduce the adaptive difficulty, because the sky doesn't have HP.

      >This seems like an awfully overcomplicated way to handle something tracking the % of shots that don't hit NPCs would fix.
Correct. Nobody would program a game this way, especially a modern game where the levels consist of much more stuff than just the generic term "wall". You'd have to apply this to every single clutter object they've used to decorate the scenery, because those objects also have colliders that allow bullets to hit them. Adaptive difficulty is not a complex enough concept to require anything as complicated as that. Just increase the difficulty factor when you hit enemies, kill enemies, find ammo and resources, and decrease it when you attack without hitting, spend resources and when you yourself get hit. It's not rocket science.

In FF7: Crisis Core it's actually possible to reach the Superboss Minerva before you even get the Buster Sword if you grind out the laundry list of missions they force you to do before it. Throughout the entire time, Zack will of course not have the Buster Sword and just use the stock SOLDIER Sword. However, the Minerva fight will always start with a cutscene with Zack entering the arena, Buster Sword on his back, and the following fight, he will have the Buster Sword equipped as well.
This doesn't spread anywhere (so far as I've seen), Zack will still use the SOLDIER Sword in all other missions until defeating Angeal and getting the Buster Sword, but the Minerva fight itself is coded in just a way to use that specific model no matter what. I just think it's pretty neat.
I do not have the patience to do that horrific process again in the Remake, so I can't say whether or not that carries over. Maybe one day.

Ah, the fascinating historical narrative surrounding the inception of Final Fantasy and its peculiar position within the annals of gaming lore! Cast your mind back to the hallowed halls of the late 1980s, where Square, now renowned as Square Enix, teetered on the precipice of destiny, contemplating the cessation of their illustrious journey through the realm of video game development. It was an era marked by uncertainty and financial tribulations, a crucible in which Square's creative mettle was tested to its very limits.

As serendipity would have it, Hironobu Sakaguchi, a visionary game designer, stood at the forefront of this pivotal juncture, entrusted with the arduous task of crafting a magnum opus, a last-ditch effort to salvage Square's faltering fortunes. The project that emerged from this crucible was none other than Final Fantasy, a title that would go on to redefine the RPG genre and etch itself into the collective consciousness of gamers worldwide.

The very nomenclature of "Final Fantasy" itself, redolent with a poignant sense of finality, was emblematic of Square's tentative aspirations. Sakaguchi, perhaps acutely aware of the high stakes riding on this project, sought to encapsulate the essence of his creative vision within a title that hinted at both closure and possibility, an oxymoronic harbinger of both denouement and continuation.

Yet, fate, it seems, had a penchant for irony, as Final Fantasy, rather than serving as Square's swan song, metamorphosed into a phoenix that would rise from the ashes, breathing new life into the company's trajectory. The game's unprecedented success not only resuscitated Square from the brink of oblivion but also paved the way for a sprawling, multi-dimensional franchise that has endured the test of time, spanning countless iterations, spin-offs, and a kaleidoscope of worlds and characters.

I come into this thread only to tell you that you are WRONG. You perpetuate an urban legend!
In actuality, Final Fantasy was going to be named Fighting Fantasy, but they decided not to after doing their research and learning the name was trademarked overseas by an obscure british tabletop game. But they wanted to keep the FF alliteration, and basically went with the first thing that came to mind and sounded cool.
(... that's all that you're wrong about. The rest of the story is correct, Square was absolutely about to crumble and FFI was indeed their last do or die. But they didn't call it Final because of that.)

Speedrunners literally don't even see world 4. They go straight from world 1 to world 10.
Unless it's an every level run, in which case they wouldn't skip anything anyway.

Use the first whistle, which takes you to the map select screen. ON THE MAP SELECT SCREEN, use your second whistle and go straight to the final world.

In Pikmin 2 versus mode you can modify the layouts and starting positions of the onions by holding the c-stick as you select the stage (L and R might have done something to?)
I remember there was one map where you could make someone's onion spawn in the arena with the big black spider boss. Dunno if this is obscure anymore but at the time I found it way back there was no documentation and nobody believed me.

Issue with "obscure" facts is that a common fact on one game that no one had ever played is likely more obscure than a lesser known fact on a well known IP. Example, did you know on Time Stalkers there is a hidden extra character call Marion that even have their own ending? If you even heard of the game you likely already know that already. Compare that information to the fact the first gen Pokemon game can give you free Pokeballs like the rest of the series but it required you to defeat your rival twice without getting any new Pokemon or evolving your starter. Not worth it and the dialog that comes with it in English isn't written correctly but it is an option that exist.

If you really want something obscure just talk about a game no one gives a frick about.

The Smash Bros Brawl version Snake has a full unused jujitsu throw animation for the opponent when they get thrown to the side, in which they roll and flop to the ground. In the final version the opponent just goes into their normal launched state.

The Combat Assault Rifle in the Unreal expansion pack is shittily coded so using the altfire while using primary fire doesn't use any ammo, unlike when using the altfire by itself.

Here's a piece of ds2 trivia that I like: You can decapitate the duke's dear freja, but it is based off of poise damage, rather than just normal damage(I'm pretty sure this is standard for body part cuts in souls games, now that I think about it), so if you can do enough poise damage to both of her heads without killing her, say, with an un-upgraded heavy weapon of some kind, you can decapitate both of her heads with her not dead, thus leaving her effectively invulnerable, as those are the only parts of her that can take damage.

There was a small PvP scene for the game Rocket Slime/Slime Morimori 2, and they banned a particular strategy that involved winning the tank battles by not not actually firing a single projectile at your opponent. The sequel was also never localized despite 2 being one of the best selling DS games on its release year.

In the english translation of FFVII for PS1, the game's code calls the last ancient "Aerith", her commonly accepted name used in all later translations. Only one place is she named "Aeris"; the character naming screen.
If you force her to be in your party by some other means (such as utilizing a glitch to skip this screen or plain cheats), the default name is Aerith.
In the same vein, the default name for the main character is Ex-SOLDIER, but that is deliberate as Cloud is the only character whose default name you are permitted to see for the intro sequence. But if you were to skip it somehow, he would just be Ex-SOLDIER forever.
