Could also be said for the Insurgency Mod & Counter Strike up until ~2015. These games didn’t have intricate stories and characters, they had communities. You would find a few good servers to frequent, hop on them every night and have fun with people you got to know as you became a regular. Combine this with the atmosphere of the source engine and you have yourself an unrivaled experience. You don’t get this type of stuff today with live service games, oversaturated unreal engine jank and matchmaking that killed off what was left of smaller server communities.
