There's no point to it, it's just a hobby for autists. They love fixating on things, and totally meaningless accomplishments like "I'm the fastest guy in the world at Mario 3" make them excited because it makes them the king of a very small online pond where everyone else has to respect them because they're the fastest.

Compared to a lot of other "hobbies" these days, things like buying keyboards, watches, collecting game carts, funko pops, it's at least slightly productive. They really should've just learnt something interesting though, like a language or an instrument.

      Anonymous

      >"I'm the fastest guy in the world at Mario 3"
What's wrong with that? It's pretty cool to be the world's best at something, especially if there's a lot of competition for the position.

That guy has unironically accomplished more than you ever will in your entire life

        >It's pretty cool to be the world's best at something, especially if there's a lot of competition for the position.
It's not cool. It's dumb. If everyone else competed to see who could jump off the highest cliff and live, would you be doing it?

It's a meaningless metric, made even more sad by the fact that most of record holders lose it within a year or so, and then you're just "I was ONCE the fastest guy in the world at Mario 3, but then some 12 year old kid beat me". Beating a game fast isn't an accomplishment, because nobody outside that community of autists on discord gives a shit. Go on, tell me right now who the fastest guy in the world is at Mario 3 without looking it up. Mario 2 (either one)? You don't know, nobody knows, because nobody cares.

      Anonymous

      >like a language or an instrument.
Yeah, just like, learn one of these things, dude. Even if you have no use for either, there nothing you actually want to use the language for, and you're not interested in trying to do anything new or interesting with music, these things are automatically better than being better than other people at something you do know you have skill in and can realistically be the best at.

'Speedrunners' who just use it as an excuse to have something to do on stream but make no attempt to improve or compete and barely care about the game are complete trash though

        Anonymous

I imagine most people here would benefit from some productive skill. Don't like any other languages? Don't learn one. It's like the reason you play Mario 3 instead of Mario 64. Oh, wait, that's because you played one of them when you were 7 and the other one later so you didn't fixate on it as much.

There's so much shit you could be doing. There's got to be something else that interests you more than bing bing wahoo man, this can't be your life.

Even shitposting is at least a new experience every time. You find a new moron to shout at. Playing the same game over and over is just autism, you are banging your head against a wall until all the stars align.

If you want other examples of completely worthless hobbies, see most "world record" hunters. Shit like stacking cups or cards or most coins in a person's mouth.

                Anonymous

All hobbies are a waste of time depending on who you ask. All that matters is if you enjoy it.

I don't think record hunters enjoy it. I think it's a compulsion, a way to prove yourself to others. In some ways the drive can be healthy, but when it gets twisted like this so that "proving it to others" means "impressing 5 other guys on a discord for 5 minutes", I think you've missed the mark entirely.

I think e-sports is a fricking joke for idiots, but I still have more respect for the players than I do for speedrunners. The passion can be monetized into a stupid job, instead of going nowhere.

Speedrunning is a genuine waste of fricking time.

I can understand it for games which were designed for it with competition in mind and getting best time, but the autism of finding obscure glitch to shave off few miliseconds of your best time is moronic.

Especially since games have so many glitches that at any point the trannies that own the speedrunning sites will claim your glitch not allowed and that will be it. Or even better. Consider you a chud and ban you from all lists even if your time is the best.

Not reading all of that, but Capcom ruined RE4R for me by making all the cool rewards be the result of speedrunning.
I'd have loved new modes that made my playthrough TAKE LONGER, I paid full price for this shit I didn't want to deconstruct the gameplay and learn to run it in under 5 hours for fricks sake but the rewards gear you towards it.
A randomizer mode, a "chainsaw mode" that made all normal Ganados carry one, pursuer mode that added a stalking enemy, being able to use the Mercenaries characters for story mode, etc..
None of those gameplay additions are in. You play the game, and if you want anything more out of it, you play it faster.

I'm probably being cynic but it annoys me because that's the game.

There is no such thing as playing video game wrong. This whole mindset of
    >You must enjoy video game like an art
    Is stupid.
In the end game is game. You play, you get some enjoyment out of it. No one can tell you...
    >Nooo! You shouldn't skip the cutscene! It reveal the intricacies of the character feeling about...
Shut up b***h, I am playing games, not watching movie. I just want to cave in some goblin skulls and loot their dead body, I don't care about the story.
Of course you can also play the games just to enjoy the scenery like some amusement park ride, I will find no fault in that.
But telling other people that they play the wrong way is stupid. Those are just snob who don't even "play" games. They just watch them and pretend that they have higher intellect than you because they "properly" enjoy the game the way the devs intended.
