the ranking and matchmaking needs to be rebalanced...
if i set it to any +-X preferred, then 9 times out of 10 i get someone who is either as many ranks as below me as possible, someone who is the same rank, or at best one rank above, and winning these matches awards you very few points
but if i set it to no restriction, then 9 times out of 10 i get matched with people who are 5 or more ranks above me, and losing these matches makes you lose a lot of points
with these conditions, you can win 10-15 matches in a row and earn so few points that 1-2 losses against a much higher rank can nullify any point gain
already tried, and as i said, 9 times out of 10 i get paired with players that are -2 and that one time it doesnt happen it's most likely a +1, and winning these matches awards you very few points it'll take 10-15 if not more wins just to advance half a rank
As someone who has always played fighters strictly casually and hasnt touched one in a while I will say that if I had to pick one up now from the newly released games I would pick Tekken because it both looks the best and looks the most fun, it would also be my first Tekken game.

I think you can still backdash but with sidesteps and crouches thrown in. Try that out for me.
You can still backdash and KBD but the distance travelled with each backdash is significantly smaller. Sidestep does tend to be more consistent in T8 than T7 but there's still a lot of moves that will clip your stepping even from a +/-0 position when it doesn't seem to make sense, but that's Tekken for you.
The worst offender right now is the massive amount from ONE swing, they wanted aggression? Get that b***h's chainsaw nerfed to half per hit, holy shit.
Chainsaws have always been high damage, it's the trade off considering that Alisa can't move properly or block before putting them away which takes frames to do, or she has to do a move to transition back to regular mode. And again, there's a lot of options to deal with her shit in chainsaw mode
In the webm for example, the last portion of that was going between a low and a high back and forth which a single duck and puniosh would have cleanly dealt with, netting a big combo. I don't like this attitude of "I haven't explored my options therefore please nerf", it leads to a more shallow game.

If your oppoennt crouches and you do a high mid like a jab, you don't hit in tekken. You need to land a mid that targets the body like a hook or an uppercut.
That last jab by Reina was a mid that would have connected if the low sweep by Steve didn't lower his hurtbox by just enough for it to miss.
That's Reina's 1 jab, which is a high. Steve rightly went under it. At least learn the game before you complain.

Jabs are almost strictly highs with very very few exceptions. All mids hit crouch state by design, the only time a mid won't hit is if the hurtbox of a move is too evasive regardless of the actual hitbox state (being defined as: standing, crouching or jumping). There's a few moves that duck so low that even mids will be evaded but that's not a strict "crush" like a crouch state or a jump state is, it's called "evasion" and is just animation specifics of a select few moves.

Nothing wrong with the webm. It's kind of funny, because jumping backwards in Tekken is an extremely risky thing to do with almost no benefit. Jumping is so bad that you almost never see it used, except by accident. But, against all odds, it works out for this Steve player, and then he wins. Although he also could've just stood there, blocked the headbutt, and then gotten a guaranteed punish to win the round, with much less risk involved. Which goes back to jumping being bad and almost never worth doing.
Anyways, modern generation of fighting game players screech and shit their pants any time anything like this happens. They learned from the Youtube man that if they do their safe mids and don't play too risky, they will be good at the game. They completely drank the kool-aid on this, and now any time anybody wins by doing anything cool or funny or stylish, they feel cheated. The logic goes something like this.

TMM hasn't seriously played competitively ever. He has no tournament results, he has never had an active run at a Tekken World Tour. He is a decent online player but he frequently ducks matchups he doesn't like and gives out a LOT of misinformation about characters that he's unfamiliar with.
He's an entertaining content creator if you like his schtick, but he's not at all "one of the best". Look at players like Knee, JDCR, Lowhigh etc for the best Tekken players, massively consistent tournament results for years and years, complete character knowledge, situational awareness like no-one else etc.
They just don't know how to react to actual combos because nobody really uses combos in pro tekken cuz that's not safe.
Pros don't play the same way as matchmaking nolifers do. Pros especially Koreans play very safe tag you are it tekken and refuse to elaborate so they suck by definition at the fundies when it comes to reading combos.

Also, to anyone not familiar with Tekken 8. If someone uses special style you can literally see what buttons they press on screen. It tells you their entire moveset and which of the buttons they press.
Also with worse backdashing across the board and instant dash in forced 50/50 situations on a lot of moves that traditionally played more keep-out roles, so movement and space creation has taken a back seat to MASH BUTTON MASH BUTTON.
Newer characters in T7 showed this design philosophy and T7 was complete shit after S2 but at least it felt somewhat like traditional Tekken, T8 feels like a chinese mobile game.
The customization is fricking barren. Same fricking clothes with different patterns. Bamco has the SoulCalibur devs and they didn't make them do shit for Tekken 8's customization pieces.
I bought T7 on sale a while back and couldn't get over how RNG everything felt. I was very good at USF4 (beat multiple #1 players on multiple characters), but T7 was just frustrating, as if blocking was completely pointless.

you can buffer the f neutral but need to time b+2 so it comes out once you're out of blockstun. and since every move has different blockstun you'll need to lab each one individually, good luck!
Been a little bit since I messed around with Bryan, but I'm 99% sure you can buffer the whole thing. f,n,b+2 can all be input before blockstun ends. Generally, Tekken is like this for all motion inputs, unless the motion inputs are something that put you into a stance (e.g. snakedash, backsway, crouch dash, etc.) Although most motion inputs for Tekken are for going into stances, so the bufferable stuff is the exception moreso than the rule.
I can more or less decently apply pressure during the match, I've shifted my mentality towards that gameplan and I'll improve while playing. Wavedashes will eventually be ingrained in my muscle memory. I understand the 50/50 mixup gameplan and it works when I can pull it off in a match.
My most obvious flaws I think are
-I don't do enough % when my opponent misses, my punishes are weak, at most I combo 35% off their health. I'll look up some more complex combos that make use of the heat meater for this. I don't know how to make great use of my heat meter either.
-I don't sidestep correctly, and therefore lose a lot of opportunities to make my opponents whiff and EWGF them into a combo. How do I improve my sidestepping game?
-I could improve my blocking skills. Sometimes I fail to read the last move on an enemy combo string and I eat unnecessary damage.
And of course I have to improve my execution, calm down and be more precise. That comes with practice I believe.
I reckon kazuya isn't particularly great at poking or quickly punishing enemy whiffs by blocking so yeah.

Nah, don't. Heat doesn't neccessarily add a lot of damage to combos, especially if you won't be getting great milage out of the wall carry. Heat gives you increased reward out of certain moves that can be heat dashed afterwards and the new heat move is good but don't fret too much about it that early on into your game plan. Being more active on whiff punishing by watching your opponent and going for the appropriate long range poke or launcher to punish is much more important. Also you're playing Kazuyers, your punishes are always good. 1,1,2 is one of the best 10f punishes, you don't even need to know if you could've done a 13f or something because of it and you can just launch at 14f and later frames on block.
For sidestepping, just look at what moves your opponent is doing. Are they even doing linear ass moves often enough for it to be worth it? Focus on the next move to punish, just like expecting a low or a high to duck.
Yeah getting used to the billion strings is hard and takes time, but one way to be better at it is to just fricking backdash away so they can't use all their strings or string followups in the first place.
Whiffs are when you don't block anon, and Kazuya is great at punishing those because EWGF is a very long range high reward punish for it.

I was using whiff to talk about both moves they don't hit, or hit but I manage to block so they didn't land (and that's where you punish).

Forgot to add (because the thread was on page 10 and was gonna die lol) but if there's one thing that you have to learn about movement is to KBD which is korean backdash cancelling. You don't have to do it all the time and you don't have to do twenty of these in a row, legit being able to do two backdashes in a row with this or three will improve your movement a lot. You basically cancel your backdash by crouching and backdash again, which puts a massive amount of distance between you and the opponent.
How you do it is
You do a backdash, press down while still holding the second back, let go and then press back again. So
b n b db b n b
And you can repeat as needed. Some newbies that want to learn how to be defensive try abusing it too much and get themselves into a corner so don't go farther than you need to, this is just so the opponent can't press whatever stupid fast buttons they have that's range 0 and/or to force whiffs so you still want to be at a range where you can 1,1,2 or ewgf on reaction to anything they whiff
This is also a universal thing so if you ever get bored with Kazuya you'll still use this often.

I'm so bad at fighting games that training and arcade mode is gives me plenty of replay value. Especially the endless modes that most Namco fighting games have.
Tekken 8 is a predictable follow-up to a series that's never aimed particularly high, it may please casual gamers for a day or two but the stagnant ongoing series is definitely in the second tier of fighters way below Capcom or NRS games, and it's seriously getting old and tired. The lack of depth and subtlety and the emphasis on the offensive, rather than the defensive, puts this squarely two notches below the best in the genre, the shallow gameplay leaves much to be desired from a serious fighting game player. Like the prequels, Tekken 8 is geared towards casual gamers and anyone who's been exposed to more technical, more dynamic fighting games will quickly pass on tekken. Other top fighters, namely Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have advanced impressively in their latest installments; but the relic that is tekken just can't seem to evolve, furthermore many combos can be done simply by hitting 1-button, and the nearly "instant-kill" heat moves are just laughably broken. Instead of supplying a proper fighting engine, matches in T8 seem to rely heavily on "who can get their Heat move off first". So many elements of the gameplay don't even require any sort of skill. In my book, Heat system also gets old very quickly. And in the end, it's more of a novelty or gimmick rather than an actual, thought-out fighting game mechanic. But hey, the casual crowd will be pleased!
If you want something a little more "button-masher-friendly," tekken might be your cup of tea.... Key word, might.

if i set it to any +-X preferred, then 9 times out of 10 i get someone who is either as many ranks as below me as possible, someone who is the same rank, or at best one rank above, and winning these matches awards you very few points
but if i set it to no restriction, then 9 times out of 10 i get matched with people who are 5 or more ranks above me, and losing these matches makes you lose a lot of points
with these conditions, you can win 10-15 matches in a row and earn so few points that 1-2 losses against a much higher rank can nullify any point gain

Alisa has always been a steady A tier at best and chainsaw mode has so many options to deal with it, one particular weakness being that 90% of the moves from it are paper thin linear hitboxes
You can still backdash and KBD but the distance travelled with each backdash is significantly smaller. Sidestep does tend to be more consistent in T8 than T7 but there's still a lot of moves that will clip your stepping even from a +/-0 position when it doesn't seem to make sense, but that's Tekken for you.
The worst offender right now is the massive amount from ONE swing, they wanted aggression? Get that b***h's chainsaw nerfed to half per hit, holy shit.
Chainsaws have always been high damage, it's the trade off considering that Alisa can't move properly or block before putting them away which takes frames to do, or she has to do a move to transition back to regular mode. And again, there's a lot of options to deal with her shit in chainsaw mode
In the webm for example, the last portion of that was going between a low and a high back and forth which a single duck and puniosh would have cleanly dealt with, netting a big combo. I don't like this attitude of "I haven't explored my options therefore please nerf", it leads to a more shallow game.

Jabs are almost strictly highs with very very few exceptions. All mids hit crouch state by design, the only time a mid won't hit is if the hurtbox of a move is too evasive regardless of the actual hitbox state (being defined as: standing, crouching or jumping). There's a few moves that duck so low that even mids will be evaded but that's not a strict "crush" like a crouch state or a jump state is, it's called "evasion" and is just animation specifics of a select few moves.

Nothing wrong with the webm. It's kind of funny, because jumping backwards in Tekken is an extremely risky thing to do with almost no benefit. Jumping is so bad that you almost never see it used, except by accident. But, against all odds, it works out for this Steve player, and then he wins. Although he also could've just stood there, blocked the headbutt, and then gotten a guaranteed punish to win the round, with much less risk involved. Which goes back to jumping being bad and almost never worth doing.
Anyways, modern generation of fighting game players screech and shit their pants any time anything like this happens. They learned from the Youtube man that if they do their safe mids and don't play too risky, they will be good at the game. They completely drank the kool-aid on this, and now any time anybody wins by doing anything cool or funny or stylish, they feel cheated. The logic goes something like this.

TMM hasn't seriously played competitively ever. He has no tournament results, he has never had an active run at a Tekken World Tour. He is a decent online player but he frequently ducks matchups he doesn't like and gives out a LOT of misinformation about characters that he's unfamiliar with.
He's an entertaining content creator if you like his schtick, but he's not at all "one of the best". Look at players like Knee, JDCR, Lowhigh etc for the best Tekken players, massively consistent tournament results for years and years, complete character knowledge, situational awareness like no-one else etc.

Also with worse backdashing across the board and instant dash in forced 50/50 situations on a lot of moves that traditionally played more keep-out roles, so movement and space creation has taken a back seat to MASH BUTTON MASH BUTTON.
Newer characters in T7 showed this design philosophy and T7 was complete shit after S2 but at least it felt somewhat like traditional Tekken, T8 feels like a chinese mobile game.

Can you buffer the whole thing and press 2 to get it when it's done, only buffer the f. etc?
you can buffer the f neutral but need to time b+2 so it comes out once you're out of blockstun. and since every move has different blockstun you'll need to lab each one individually, good luck!
Been a little bit since I messed around with Bryan, but I'm 99% sure you can buffer the whole thing. f,n,b+2 can all be input before blockstun ends. Generally, Tekken is like this for all motion inputs, unless the motion inputs are something that put you into a stance (e.g. snakedash, backsway, crouch dash, etc.) Although most motion inputs for Tekken are for going into stances, so the bufferable stuff is the exception moreso than the rule.

I can more or less decently apply pressure during the match, I've shifted my mentality towards that gameplan and I'll improve while playing. Wavedashes will eventually be ingrained in my muscle memory. I understand the 50/50 mixup gameplan and it works when I can pull it off in a match.
My most obvious flaws I think are
-I don't do enough % when my opponent misses, my punishes are weak, at most I combo 35% off their health. I'll look up some more complex combos that make use of the heat meater for this. I don't know how to make great use of my heat meter either.
-I don't sidestep correctly, and therefore lose a lot of opportunities to make my opponents whiff and EWGF them into a combo. How do I improve my sidestepping game?
-I could improve my blocking skills. Sometimes I fail to read the last move on an enemy combo string and I eat unnecessary damage.
And of course I have to improve my execution, calm down and be more precise. That comes with practice I believe.
I reckon kazuya isn't particularly great at poking or quickly punishing enemy whiffs by blocking so yeah.

Nah, don't. Heat doesn't neccessarily add a lot of damage to combos, especially if you won't be getting great milage out of the wall carry. Heat gives you increased reward out of certain moves that can be heat dashed afterwards and the new heat move is good but don't fret too much about it that early on into your game plan. Being more active on whiff punishing by watching your opponent and going for the appropriate long range poke or launcher to punish is much more important. Also you're playing Kazuyers, your punishes are always good. 1,1,2 is one of the best 10f punishes, you don't even need to know if you could've done a 13f or something because of it and you can just launch at 14f and later frames on block.
For sidestepping, just look at what moves your opponent is doing. Are they even doing linear ass moves often enough for it to be worth it? Focus on the next move to punish, just like expecting a low or a high to duck.
Yeah getting used to the billion strings is hard and takes time, but one way to be better at it is to just fricking backdash away so they can't use all their strings or string followups in the first place.
Whiffs are when you don't block anon, and Kazuya is great at punishing those because EWGF is a very long range high reward punish for it.

I was using whiff to talk about both moves they don't hit, or hit but I manage to block so they didn't land (and that's where you punish).

B 1,2 is also a top tier punish but there are lots of stuff that's just -10 and 1,1,2 is hit confirmable so it's ok to just stick to that one and ewgf till you learn what to punish and how better. It's still a string you should know, yeah.
while rising (ws) 1,2 is a 13f launcher, it's top tier. so if you block a low, you likely can launch it with this. If you can't just do ws 4. Also good to use ws1,2 for highs you ducked.

Forcing whiffs with movement is a big part of Tekken and people at lower ranks whiff more than anyone else, getting used to punishing whiffs with ewgf will carry you well.

Forgot to add (because the thread was on page 10 and was gonna die lol) but if there's one thing that you have to learn about movement is to KBD which is korean backdash cancelling. You don't have to do it all the time and you don't have to do twenty of these in a row, legit being able to do two backdashes in a row with this or three will improve your movement a lot. You basically cancel your backdash by crouching and backdash again, which puts a massive amount of distance between you and the opponent.
How you do it is
You do a backdash, press down while still holding the second back, let go and then press back again. So
b n b db b n b
And you can repeat as needed. Some newbies that want to learn how to be defensive try abusing it too much and get themselves into a corner so don't go farther than you need to, this is just so the opponent can't press whatever stupid fast buttons they have that's range 0 and/or to force whiffs so you still want to be at a range where you can 1,1,2 or ewgf on reaction to anything they whiff
This is also a universal thing so if you ever get bored with Kazuya you'll still use this often.

Tekken 8 is a predictable follow-up to a series that's never aimed particularly high, it may please casual gamers for a day or two but the stagnant ongoing series is definitely in the second tier of fighters way below Capcom or NRS games, and it's seriously getting old and tired. The lack of depth and subtlety and the emphasis on the offensive, rather than the defensive, puts this squarely two notches below the best in the genre, the shallow gameplay leaves much to be desired from a serious fighting game player. Like the prequels, Tekken 8 is geared towards casual gamers and anyone who's been exposed to more technical, more dynamic fighting games will quickly pass on tekken. Other top fighters, namely Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have advanced impressively in their latest installments; but the relic that is tekken just can't seem to evolve, furthermore many combos can be done simply by hitting 1-button, and the nearly "instant-kill" heat moves are just laughably broken. Instead of supplying a proper fighting engine, matches in T8 seem to rely heavily on "who can get their Heat move off first". So many elements of the gameplay don't even require any sort of skill. In my book, Heat system also gets old very quickly. And in the end, it's more of a novelty or gimmick rather than an actual, thought-out fighting game mechanic. But hey, the casual crowd will be pleased!
If you want something a little more "button-masher-friendly," tekken might be your cup of tea.... Key word, might.
