The series peaked with FSN and FHA, and it's all downhill from there.
Nasu allowing others who don't have history in writing VNs to write stories for Fate and consider them official work was a mistake.

Hur dur dur embrace realism - Natsu

He didn't really easily throw them away. And it was realism in the sense that he took Kiritsugu's dream and twisted it to something that wouldn't end up with him on that empty hill at the end of his life. It's just "Save everyone, but make sure Sakura is safe first." Only thing that changed is he made room for family.

I think it's supposed to be a more selfish choice, like "I'll save sakura even though it means she'll kill more people before I can" but then she doesn't kill actually kill any more innocents after he decides that so it doesn't feel like there's any difference in his actions

            Anonymous

He already made a selfish choice in fate route and was only stopped by saber. Shirou, at his core, is a selfish person.

Why is Shirou being a nice guy portrayed as a bad thing? In the first scenes of OG fate you see Shirou going with the flow, being a pushover for the student council and the archery club (specifically shinji)

Why is Shirou clowned on by the cast for being a kind, selfless person?

He's not really clowned on, at least when people finally realize how insane he really is. It's most obvious in ubw and HF, but you see bits of it in fate as well.

the reason Shirou got clowned on is because people don't understand him. Rin changed her mind as soon as she learned about his mental illness.
It's the same reasons why anime-only think Shirou is just simply a moron instead of a mentally ill moron. (Though, it doesn't help that the anime adaption butchered his characterization)

He never had any ""ideals"" in the first place, he had programming. In fate he never examines his programming and simply follows through like a robot. In UBW he understands that he's basically a machine following set of instructions, but accepts it because he believes that his programming is ultimately benign. In HF he rejects his programming and becomes a real human being and a real hero

Saber is associated with summer (youth, vigor, sunny stuff). Saber and Shirou fought as a team in the ending of Fate. Servant vs Servant, Master vs Master as any actual battle in a Grail War should be fought for. Both fought their foils and beat their respective nemesis. But they briefly crossed paths, and learned a great deal from each other in their short time together, then went their separate ways and moved on. Saber got peace, and Shirou had his whole life to look forward to.

Rin is associated with autumn (wisdom, maturity, transitions), while nothing is fully resolved for Shirou, he's now more aware of himself and also older (finished a school year) waiting for the future. Shirou pitting his ideals against Archer and learning from the experience so that he doesn't end up like the latter. The classroom is bathed on red hues of afternoon (kind of fall-color scheme). Rin and Shirou both essentially struggling with the legacy of their fathers. Shirou struggles with Kiritsugu's ideal and Rin's struggles are about Tokiomi and how he left her the family legacy to tend to. And both resolve their struggles by realizing that the reason they latched onto their fathers' legacies in the first place was because it made them happy. Rin found magic fun and Shirou envied Kiritsugu's happiness when he saved him.

Ilya is associated with winter (death, snow, cold, etc), and winter symbolizes 'rest', as well as life's passing. Irisviel and Illyasviel and Justeaze are homunculi created by the Einzberns to fulfill their wish and achieve the third true magic. Justeaze was sacrificed to become the core of the Greater Grail, and Irisviel and Illyasviel were created based on Justeaze and can be thought of as successor models of Justeaze to be sacrificed as the Lesser Grail.

Sakura is associated with spring (renewal, rebirths, healing, flowers). Canon wife. Should be obvious, Shirou died and rebirth in this route.

The first 5 singularities aren't very good, 6 and especially 7 are actually good.

For the pseudo singularities: shinjuku is decent, it has probably my favourite use of noble phantasm rules in the series. Agartha sucks. Shimousa is ok. Salem was neat.

Part 2: LB1 is ok, 2 had a few really cool ideas but wasn't very special otherwise. 3 was meh, 4 was pretty good, 5 is kino, 6 is easily the best Fate thing since the VN.

Shimousa is fricking awful, full on Musashi wank and her popularity means that we will never get an actual authentic Musashi in Fate. I have read his books and he is a far more interesting person than the gender bent shonen moron that took his place.
She becomes less worse over time but I hate how she's shoved down in many stories and gets a main role, at least Dantes knows to keep to the sidelines or at least be interesting when he takes center stage.

          She is hot however.

No because the whole thing with lostbelts is that they're failed timelines because they stagnate. There's generally one big event that made things diverge and then the society just remains unchanged with no significant events for thousands of years. LB6 is unique in how much history it has.

                >Nasu: I will say that Rin was my favourite character when I was writing the story. Rin is like Aoko in so many aspects that it felt good to write Rin's story. Of course, Rider showed up shortly after that and everything went to hell. With regard to Saber, writing her story was always nerve-wracking because I knew she was really important to Takeuchi. Whenever an artist gets attached to a specific character, it's really stressful for me to write that character's portion of the overall story. I guess the added stress comes from the feeling that the character no longer belongs to just me, and that I need to meet someone's high expectations as I flesh them out. I noticed I was constantly pushing myself to do "better" while I was writing Saber's story. In contrast, I felt so much freedom when writing Rin's story.

                >Nasu: Typical Urobuchi... I really can't pull the wool over your eyes... I intended to take that to the grave with me, but I guess this 10-year anniversary is a good place to talk about it. Just like Urobuchi-san said, it's difficult to call the relationship between Shirou and Saber a relationship between a man and a woman. Saber has fought for a long time as the ruler of Britain, but then turned into a girl all of a sudden and fell in love with Shirou. It's pretty ridiculous when you think about it. But I really wanted to push it towards that sort of boy-meets-girl story. So as a last resort, I had Shirou continually say things to her like "But you're a girl," and "Girls aren't supposed to fight," in order to remind the users that "she is really a girl." It's like the author's actually the one trying to convince Saber that she's a girl... I feel like I could have written it a lot better now, but that was the best I could do at the time.

Nasu hates the original FATE route and has been trying to rewrite it ever since it was released.

All adaptations skip the internal monologue and the subtler parts of confrontations in the vn which made up most of the characters work
There's a reason why shirou is so divisive because because most of his character is explored and developed internally and he hardly ever talks about it, people who started with the vn have a completely different perspective of those who started with the anime
This goes for many other characters too

          >FSN is longer than Lord of the Rings. It's almost as long as all Harry Potter books put together.
It really doesn't feel that long.

F/SN is the only VN I go back to to reread scenes from because some of them are just too kino. I'm trying to get through HA but it's pretty hard for me to get into for some reason.

    >read FSN for like 15 hours enjoying the story
    >suddenly shown Saber ass
    >I now remember this is an eroge
Did Nasu just write porn scenes for Tsukihime and Fate because he felt like it? I thought it was supposed to be a selling point, but by the time I get to them I'm already committed to staying on the ride for everything else going on in the VN.

iirc he didn't even want sex scenes, but he felt compelled to add them for the game to sell better
later versions of the game would replace the events with SFW versions

I'm glad I've found somebody who agrees. I feel like I am taking crazy pills sometimes when people wax poetic about how great ufotable is, when they can't direct an action sequence to save their damn lives.

The Berserker vs Saber Alter fight makes me actually cringe with the constant massive explosions everywhere. They just throw away all the meaning and subtext of the fight for DUDE NUKES LMAO. And my friends are all sakugagays who jack off to it.

I’ve never seen the HF movies because I saw a webm of the cavern sequence at the end and the 2D Sakura on the 3D background looked awful. The way the camera moved looked awful too. I’ve heard so many good things about saber alter vs berserker but I can’t imagine any of them are true

As someone who got forced into watching the movie, they are beyond fricking awful. UFO butchered everything they could, the only good things about the movies are the theme songs, and that one single second of Saber muttering "Ah... Shirou" at the end of the cavern fight
