that was the point, being the evolution generation it was about weird ways that force unnatural evolutions onto pokemon causing them to be really weird looking

And they shelved this idea instantly. Some mons took the L but it was good that it was that bad

This is simply not true. Jynx, Electabuzz and Magmar were a trio until Generation 4

Mr Mime's counterpart became Sudowoodo in Generation 4 and has been since

Mr. Mime and Jynx were a flavor pair. They're both the only two distinctly humanesque pokemon in gen 1. Both psychic which was pretty distinct. Jynx was originally supposed to be pure Ice and more of a monster to fit the trio, but they decided to give her human characteristics and add psychic in order to provide a female counterpart to Mr. Mime. Duos fit the aesthetic of the original games more than trios anyway. Most likely partway through development they switched it. Adding to that, the birds being a trio is rather distinct, and made more so with Jynx being removed from the original intent.

          source?

Magmar is Blue exclusive, Electabuzz is Red exclusive. Meanwhile both Jynx and Mr. Mime are available in both RB but ONLY through trade. Magmar and Electabuzz have always been counterparts, Jynx has always been its own thing and has more in common with Mime than either of the two.

Mime's counterpart is Sudowoodo dummy. In gen 1 Jynx, Electabuzz and Magmar have equivalent movesets, learn ice/thunder/fire punch, are next to each other in the dex, all got pre-evos in gen 2 which are also next to each other in the dex in the same order. I bet if not for the black stereotype controversy she would have got an evo with them in gen 4, instead we got Rhyperior

Yeah, that's what I thought, your headcanon. By that logic Jynx and Lickitung are counterparts.

version exclusives in DP with new gen 4 baby stages. I still wouldn't go as far to say counterparts though
